He's amazing! In fact, he's the reason why I started reading UF to begin with. Trader (Newford, #7) by Charles de Lint is one of my favorite books.

Malia Haberman Hi everyone! I'm Malia, (Rhymes with Maria) and I thought this looked like a fun group. Especially when I saw you guys like Grimm. :) Plus, Urban Fantasy is one of my favorite genres.

Well I teach Ballroom Dancing, I love reading and writing and chocolate and I live in the Seattle area with my 4 wild and crazy ferrets.

Hi, Malia! Love your name. :)
I myself thought this was a really awesome looking group before I joined, encouraged by the fact that this group also liked Once Upon A Time.

Malia Haberman Thanks, Alinesan! Oh, and I'm a huge Once Upon a Time fan, too. :)

I'm Alex from North Wales, where our weather gives us plenty of excuses to stay inside and read.
I love books with original ideas and unhindered imagination, so naturally I'm drawn to Urban Fantasy.

In that I once stole a book of his from the library to send to my best friend because I was SURE she had to read it RIGHT THEN. Other than that, I'm a writer and an occasional bureaucrat that likes my dreaming life better than my awake one. Except for those d*mn claustrophobia dreams...

Al H. (alfons) | 19 comments Hello everyone.

I'm Al. Live in the US and have been reading science fiction, fantasy and fiction since I was young. Am an avid reader, and have been since first coming across Tolkien's "The Hobbit" in grade school. I've enjoyed series like the Dresden Files, Iron Druid Chronicles, the Hollows, Mercedes Thompson, Walker Papers, Jane Yellowrock, and October Daye.

Came here hoping for some suggestions for other good series.

Looking forward to suggestions/discussions.

Cheers!

message 761: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Michael | 111 comments Welcome. Unfortunately, don't have a lot of suggestions as three of the ones I usually recommend you already mentioned. You might try Katherine Kerr's "Nola O'Grady" series, Kat Richardson's "Greywalker" series and Mercedes Lackey has three older books featuring Diana Tregarde. Tanya Huff you might like as well, I've read some of her Keeper's Chronicle books and the Victoria Nelson books, but The Enchantment Emporiumis by far my favorite of hers.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've read some of Mercedes works, but haven't gotten around to the particular series you've mentioned.
The other's I've read already and liked, so it would be safe to say I should like Diana Tregrade as well. Unfortunately, as I said I am an avid reader so I didn't want to post a laundry list in my introductory post.
I expect to find some good direction moving forward here, and maybe some hidden treasures as you have already pointed out. Although now that you mention it, it has been quite some time since I first read any of Tanya Huff's books so it might be time for a re-visit.

Cheers.

message 769: by Readhead (last edited Feb 17, 2013 08:52PM) (new)

Readhead (miche124) Hi, my first urban fantasy was Neverwhere, I think. Since then I've been reading urban fantasy since Emma Bull, Will Shetterly, Terri Windling, and Charles de Lint were practically the only ones writing it. A few years ago when this sub-genre really took off, I grabbed many series to read...until they all started to look the same. Since then I've made an effort to sift through the drek to find the few winners among the glut.

It's frustrating for me to find good urban fantasy from lists, etc., when so many paranormal romance readers are labeling that urban fantasy as well. I come from the mythic fiction/fantasy side of urban fantasy, and while a bit of romance can add to a story, I am not interested in romance novels, paranormal or any other kind.

I'm going to infodump some of my favorite writers and series, many of which are unlikely to show up on the typical UF list. I apologize that I don't have the patience to link to every one, but I hope you'll explore some of these suggestions:

Nina Kiriki Hoffman;
Graham Joyce;
Christopher Moore;
Steven Brust's Agyar;
Charlie Huston's Joe Pitt series;
Sean Stewart's Galveston and Perfect Circle;
Kelley Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld series;
Zafon's Shadow of the Wind trilogy;
Season of the Witch by Natasha Mostert;
Robert Holdstock's Mythago series;
Trash Sex Magic by Jennifer Stevenson;
Odd Thomas books by Koontz;
John Connolly;
Kate Griffin's Madness of Angels series;
the Merrily Watkins series by Phil Rickman;
Kevin Hearne's Iron Druid Chronicles;
Martin Millar's The Good Fairies of New York and Lonely Werewolf Girl;
Patricia Briggs

Welcome Readhead and Tony!

Readhead, We have similar tastes! Although I do appreciate some of the newer Urban fantasy series, I also prefer what I guess would be now considered the "Old School" Urban Fantasy; Neil Gaiman, Terri Windling, Charles de Lint, with De Lint being my favourite. There's more magic. And I only started reading it a few years ago. You might know about Endicott Mythic Fiction List already, but just in case
http://endicottstudio.typepad.com/jom...
I always go back to that list when looking for something good to read and have rarely been disappointed.

message 773: by Elliott (new)

Elliott Kay (elliottkay) Hi,

I'm big on urban fantasy as a genre/setting, but I have to confess: I haven't read very many urban fantasy novels. (And yet I've dared to write in the genre. I know, I'm a heathen!) I enjoyed the hell out of "American Gods" by Neil Gaiman, though I really wished it had ended differently. Several of the Shadowrun novels (promoting the game setting) were a lot of fun, too, though obviously they're pretty light and they also involve futuristic themes & setting. I am totally down with the romantic & erotic themes so common to urban fantasy...

...but I hate vampires. Hate them. I despise them as anything but villains. All those "but he/she's a good vampire" characters? Yeah, I want them dead, too. :) So that makes it a little difficult to find novels I actually want to read in the urban fantasy genre.

I have sat on this group for a little while now, but haven't been an active participant yet. I hope to get around to changing that.

message 774: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Michael | 111 comments Elliott wrote: "..but I hate vampires."

Welcome, and nice to meet another non-lover of vampires, though I will admit I can deal a bit better with vampires than zombies. I've met a couple of vampires I kind of like, sort of, but can't say that I have ever met a zombie that made me do anything but gag.

Sounds like we actually have quite a lot in common in our urban fantasy dislikes ... I'm not big on the romance and particularly the erotica that is so common either ... don't like vampires, can't stand zombies ... and I don't like a lot of the grim/bleak tone of much of it either.

Maybe this is why my urban fantasy list is particularly short.

message 775: by Robin (new)

Robin (CuriousVolumes) Hello everyone! I just joined Goodreads today, and of course finding an urban fantasy group was one of my top priorities. :)

I'm Robin (that's a feminine Robin, not a masculine one) and I'm a Californian in exile in the Midwest. Ever since I was a little kid, I've loved stories that make it seem as though strange, magical things might someday happen to me. Still waiting to meet my first elf, but in the meantime I'm enjoying some very good reads!

Some of my favorite authors:
Charles de Lint
Tanya Huff
Jim Butcher
Seanan McGuire...

Well, like the Energizer Bunny, I could keep going and going, but I'm sure you get the idea. :)

message 776: by Jalilah (new)

Jalilah Welcome Elliot and Robin!
Elliot, I don't mind a few vampires in a story but I prefer writers who include different kinds of supernatural- magical creatures like Fairies, shape-shifters and not only vampires.
Robin I love Charles De Lint's books! I like the fact that he creates many different kinds of characters based on myths like his Animal People. I loved the Selkies in Tanya Huff’s last book!

Dana Cameron | 7 comments Hi, everyone! Like most everyone here, I've been reading fantasy and SF for ages. I live in Massachusetts.

I'm a big fan of Charlaine Harris, Patrick Rothfuss, Seanan McGuire, Naomi Novik, Christopher Moore--kind of all over the place. :)

Since I started off my professional life as an archaeologist, I like my UF/F with a little history or science in it. Any recommendations? Thanks!

I really enjoyed The Magicians and Mrs. Quent (Mrs. Quent, #1) by Galen Beckett . It's not real history, of course, but the UF is Victorian, plus there is a sci fi element to it.

Welcome everyone!

Michelle (quill_n_ink) | 4 comments Hello. I'm Michelle from Texas. Recently rediscovered my love of reading, and have read several genres - contemporary romance, PNR, historical romance, etc. (Yes, mostly all romance of some sort.) Discovered a new PNR series written by an indie author and just released last year. It's kind of a crossover, PNR and UF, imo. Long story short, I'm now her first reader and editor...and loving it! (I'll post info about the series in an appropriate thread.)

After finding, and loving, her series, I decided I should check out some other UF books and I found myself here. Anxious to read about recommendations from fellow group members.

I'm Lauren and I'm pretty new to Urban Fantasy. Got into it recently when I discovered that audiobook could help me get over my first person pet peeve.

Some of the series that I've begun are: Kate Daniels, Chicagoland Vampires, The Hollows and Jane Yellowrock.

Looking forward to reading and discussing with you all.

message 785: by James (new)

James Ramsey (JamesRamsey) | 4 comments Hey All! Well nothing mysterious about me - my name is James. I live in a small town about an hour outside of Vancouver Canada.

I have been a book junkie since...well birth! Not kidding. Grandpa owned a book store, talk about winning the literary lovers lottery. I love all types of books. My first obsession was the entire Black Stallion series by Walter Farley. What young girl doesn't go gaga for horses. Gramps followed that up with the Anne of Green Gables series. Throw in some Shel Silverston for my poetry education and I was hooked.

The I met the Clan of the Cave Bear books by Jean M Auel. It was torture waiting almost a decade between them but I endured by wearing out my paperbacks and then buying hardcovers.

Later it was Regency Romances. Particularly Christina Skye, Stephanie Laurens, Julie Garwood, and Johanna Lindsey - just to name a few.

Fantasy had my attention for a long time with authors like Piers Anthony and Tolkien. They led to the genius of Rowling and the unexpected world of Paolini.

Then I went through a Dan Brown Phase...still think hes brilliantly controversial.

Now it is all things paranormal! Of course it can mostly be blamed on Twilight (yes I am an addict). However, my obsession extends to Kim Harrison, Charlaine Harris (before True Blood came out), Laurell K Hamilton and Anne Rice.

Although to be fair, I loved Anne Rice long before I met Edward Cullen or Eric Northman. Mostly it was the Mayfair Witches that had me addicted to shivering under my covers but unable to put the book down.

I am a book pack rat and refuse to get rid of a book unless it disappoints me to the point of not being able to finish it. My hubby is terrified of us moving because we will need a truck just for my library.

Looking forward to many new recommendations for new obsessions!

message 787: by Judy (new)

Judy (jcauthan) Hi everyone. My name is Judy, and I live in Florida. There is something great about living down here in the land of the sunshine, because very rarely is any part of this state used in a Paranormal or Urban Fantasy. *grin* No vamps, too much sun. No really old historical cities with centuries of culture and mystery. It is perfect place to read about things that go bump in the night!

I am a very voracious reader and have been reading since my grandfather taught me at age 4. My main interests are Urban Fantasy, SciFi, Fantasy, Paranormal, Contemporary Romance, and Cozy Mysteries. But my absolute favorites are the authors that mix up their genres and create something unique.

Hopefully, I will find others here with similar tastes in books, where I can find new authors and great reads.

Joe Ducie | 1 comments Hello to all!

Can't recall if I ever introduced myself in this group or a similar one, but here I am.

My name is Joe and I'm from Perth, Western Australia. Long time reader and writer of urban fantasy and, really, fantasy of all genres. I enjoy me some Young Adult fiction, too, but will read almost anything if it comes with a strong enough recommendation. Recently just read 'John Dies at the End', and I heartily recommend it to all.

Just as an aside, anyone have a good universally-accepted definition of just what constitutes UF? I had quite the heated discussion the other day which ended in a myriad of conflicting opinions.

Eh, anyway, looking forward to joining the discussions here.

Cheers,

Joe

Welcome everyone new!
Joe, we have had a few discussions in this group regarding the defininition of Urban Fantasy, I am just not sure now where they are. Basically what everyone agrees upon is it is a broad term that changed over time to first being fantasy, usually hidden at first, taking place in our world in an Urban setting. Written in the 80s Charles de Lint's.
Moonheart by Charles de Lint . Or Emma Bull's War for the Oaks by Emma Bull would be examples of this. Since then Urban fantasy has been associated with darker, thriller like works for example like the Dresden Files Storm Front (The Dresden Files, #1) by Jim Butcher and authors like De Lint have distanced themselves from the term calling what they do " Mythic Fiction"

Larisa Walk Hi, everyone. I just joined today. I'm Larisa Walk, a dietitian and lactation consultant by day and a historical and paranormal fiction writer by night.

Although I write in English, Russian is my first language, since I was born and raised in Russia. My heritage does tend to pop up in my fiction: I absolutely love inserting the denizens of the Russian fairyland into my stories. So, my fiction is populated with creatures such as domovoi (house goblin), rusalki (water spirits), vodyanoi (water demon), etc.

I read paranormal fiction (the latest favorite is The Devil Stood Up by Christine Dougherty and of course Dean Koontz), historical, WW2, fantasy, horror. I do like when the setting is the modern day world with a good dose of the supernatural. I am looking forward to your suggestions for reading in these areas. Thanks and reading blessings to you all! :)
