Hi folks!I'm new to the group and pretty new to Goodreads, too (though I've been lurking around for a while under one of my other pen-names). I'm just about 40 (a few more months) and live in the wilds of Nova Scotia, Canada (literally--I'm in the last house on a dirt road that leads off into the wilderness).
I've been a reader and writer since I could read and write, and started reading UF way back when Charles deLint was still setting his books in Ottawa. I still have a particular fondness for stories that keep the fantasy element a little more secret, but I've also been enjoying writers like Patricia Briggs and Kelley Armstrong, too (I'm a *huge* sucker for werewolves, and have a not-exactly-secret weakness for cheesy werewolf movies).
I write UF, too, and just released the first book in a series on Christmas eve (right now just on Kindle, but the pb should be out by the end of the month, if all goes well).
I'm looking forward to joining the discussions and reading the group selections!
Hi Nic,Cool location for a writer! I'm a tad jealous.
Nice Christmas present for you. I'll take a look.

Hi Marie!
It's a bit too easy to become a total hermit where I live, though that can be good for getting a lot of writing done (it worries my mother, though). When the coyotes are howling, it's the perfect backdrop for some werewolf fiction. . .

Maybe you should open a writers' retreat :)
Heh. I've thought about that. There's plenty of room for tents, but toilet facilities, electricity (lots of extension cords?), and internet (slow at best, dodgy quite often) would be problematic.
Tipis (Teepees)!Actually, no internet could be a very, very good thing. I do need electricity, though. A toilets. Shrubbery can be a problem for me.
Hi, name is Terra Synn. I love the present day supernatural books. I have read the bedlam bard books (Mercedes Lackey), Women of Otherworld (Kelly Armstrong), Vampire Academy, Vampire Diaries (LJ Smith) {I read the original copies}, Sookie Stackhouse/Southern Vampire Series, Anita Blake: Vampire hunter, and many more.Pet Peeve: Do not talk to me about the twilight books, as far as i am concerned the books are nothing but a way to start a nice bon fire.
Hello, my name is Emily Ladouceur and I love urban fantasy and have recently developed a love for steam-punk. My favorite authors are Kim Harrison, who introduced me to urban fantasy, Patricia Briggs, Lilith Saintcrow, Jennifer Rardin (so sad about her death), Gail Carriger, just to name a few. This list is much longer. I'm always looking for new authors with great series to read.
Terra wrote: "I got my external HDD stuff. I have my e-reader back! HAPPY B-DAY TO ME!"Nice. I don't know what I'd do without mine.
Hi Everyone, I'm a reader of just about everything fantasy and scifi, but I have been preferentially looking for UF or steampunk for the last couple of years.
Hi Everybody. My name is Rachael, I'm 27 (or I will be on Monday) and I'm from the UK. I read every spare moment I have, mostly fantasy novels but I do like to have a good range of other genres for when I fancy something different. My first UF author was Kelley Armstrong who I stumbled across a couple of years ago and I've been hooked ever since.

My Aunt ordered me an external cd-rom drivefor my lappy for my birthday. Mine doesn't have one so this will be great.
fore warning, my net is probably going to be shut off tomorrow so i won't be able to get online much, please bear with me as i am also trying to get AT&T to turn on the dsl out here with a petition.
Hello Everyone!I discovered Urban Fantasy about 3 years ago and have been hooked ever since. My favourite types are when the magic is hidden at first and only later discovered by the leading character like in many of Charles de Lint’s novels. De Lint is definitely my all-time favourite, but I also love the Dark Fever Series by Karen Marie Monning and the Mercedes Thompson series by Patricia Briggs. What got me started was the Sookie Stackhouse books. I loved them and read the first 9 in a row without any break. I had to wait a year before the next book came out, but when I read it, Dead in the Family, I did not like it that much anymore. I am looking forward to learning more about more fun books to read here!

You will definitely get lots of recommendations here. Have you tried the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews or the Chicagoland Vampires by Chloe Neil?
Hi everyone! Another gal with her nose usually stuck in a book. I enjoy most anything but have been hungrily devouring any UF I can get my hands on (and the books that circle around that genre). Andrews, Briggs, Harrison and Armstrong are who I started with and adore, but I am branching out these days from all the recommendations I have seen on goodreads and this discussion group in particular. There is so much out there, thanks for helping me find the treasures adn stay away from the meh!
Jaq wrote, "Always worth checking to see if a book is available on Smashwords, as you can read the first 20% or so for free. I like to see if a book will suck me in before buying"That is why I love the samples that I can download to my Nook. sometimes the book description online has a chapter available too.
Jaq wrote: "Always worth checking to see if a book is available on Smashwords, as you can read the first 20% or so for free. I like to see if a book will suck me in before buying. :)"Ooooh, I haven't checked Smashwords yet - thank you!!
Jalilah,
,

are all relatively recent de Lint that maybe you didn't know about...Have you discovered Bordertown yet? It's quite a place!
I will later today Jaq, thanksJulia I love Bordertown! I found Will Shetterly's books Elsewhere and Nevernever and Emma Bull's Finder, great stuff, I will have to check out Kushner's Bordertown too :)
Julia wrote: "Jalilah,

Hi there!I've been in this group for a while, and I've read along with some of the discussions here. But I've yet to actually participate. I recently decided that I'm going to leave groups in which I'm not participating, since I can can read their discussions without being a member anyway.
I'm not ready to leave this group! So I'm going to try to become more active.
I'm Alicia. I read about 2-5 books per month, depending on length, my work schedule, and the demands of my current writing project. I'm relatively new (i.e., in the last year) to urban fantasy. But so far, I'm loving it.
I look forward to chatting with some of you soon!
Hi all, I’m Hazel. I live in rural Ireland but I’m originally from London, I blame the move over completely on my other half! I found this site via the reader’s nook (fantasy) on Facebook and have been hooked ever since. I ‘m an unemployed librarian (laid off once the government here realised that it was in deep doo-doo) which was sad as I got to indulge my passion for books whilst I worked and could enthuse others to read at the same time. Anyway, I now make a living baking (hands around brownies to forum members), I grow as much of my own food as I can, this does include a certain amount of meat/eggs, I obviously read, but I also enjoy rpging and dabble in writing.
Welcome to Alicia, Hazel, and Ursula. You'll add lots of books to your TBR piles.Hazel - Sorry about your job. That sucks. Unfortunately, it seems like a lot of libraries have been closing. I can't remember if it was in this group, but someone was upset because her local library would be closing soon. Very sad. Good luck with your new venture. I will gladly accept your virtual brownie. : ) Thanks!
Cheers Jean, unfortunately the libary closure is just one of those things, it's sad but then again cut backs are a fact of life here at the mo...Know anyone that wants to buy a small nearly bankrupt island in the the Atlantic...we do have nice weather ..at least once a year... I'm sure my tbr pile is going to grow to maiming porportions should it ever topple over ...and I must say I looking forward it it
Speaking of TBR piles toppling over, I used to have nightmares that I'd be one of those people you read about who's found years after they died, crushed under a pile of books in a house stuffed so full the floors are nearly collapsing. (So far, it hasn't happened, but that may be because more than half my books are in storage on the other side of the country).
Nic wrote: "Speaking of TBR piles toppling over, I used to have nightmares that I'd be one of those people you read about who's found years after they died, crushed under a pile of books in a house stuffed so ..."So you're saying that e-reader might actually save lifes?!
Martin wrote: "So you're saying that e-reader might actually save lifes?!"Heh. Yeah, if a book hoarder could be convinced to hoard e-books instead of paper books. I wonder if there's a way a person could be killed by too many e-books . . . :D
Hi All...I'm Kristina and I recently moved from Sunny California to not so sunny Utah. With nothing to do and very little friends here I have picked up on my reading once again, and am loving it. I have recently been enjoying the Sookie Stackhouse series, Hush Hush series, Hunger Game series and currently reading the Sweep series. I'm open to many genre's but right now Urban Fantasy is pulling on my heartstrings.
Welcome Maria and Kristina!the Sookie Stackhouse series, along with Twilight is what got me started reading UF. It opened up a whole new reading world for me. I went on to the Mercedes Thompson and Darkfever series, as well as discovering other great fantasy authors like Charles De Lint and Robin McKinley. It has been a lot of fun! I must say however when I went back to Sookie Stackhouse when the last novel came out I did not like it that much anymore.
Hi!Tegan here. Librarian and avid reader of sci-fi & fantasy (and lots of other books as well). Dropped in largely for the book recommendations/monthly book to read.
HiI'm Sharon. I'm a South African. I've been a fantasy and horror fan forever (starting withe Narnia when I was 8 yrs old). As a teen I was always in trouble in our small town library for taking out stuff that wasn't considered appropriate for my age (Steve King, Dean R Koontz etc):->
When my husband and I went farming (and I could finally own a whole herd of horses and ponies) my reading obsession took a back seat, as there simply wasn't enough hours in the day.
4 yrs ago we took the plunge and emigrated to New Zealand for a new life for us and our (at that stage) 2yr old son. While waiting for my work permit to come through I was bored to tears and started visiting the local library. I couldn't find any epic fantasy I hadn't read so picked up a book by Melanie Rawn called Spellbinder. I'd been following Melanie for a while and loved her high fantasy, so gave it a bash. Well that was the start of something beautiful!!! After reading this I dove headfirst into PNR and UF and anything else with a hint of supernatural or magic in it! What a wonderful world of literature!!!!!
And that in turn sparked my long-ingnored fiction writing instinct that had been drowned by life and running businesses in SA. The rest, as they say, is history. I'll introduce my writing to you all in the appropriate postings :-)
Hi, I'm Amee. I have been a member of this group for a while but have not yet posted. My friends think I am a bulldozer for the way I plow through books. I am challenging my self to read 100 books this year, and I have already read 30. I read several different types of books, but UF is definitely at the top of the list. I joined good reads for the recommendations and so far I haven't been disappointed. Keep the suggestions coming. My 2 favorite series that I have read recently are the Elemental Assign books, and the October Daye books.
Hello my name is Nicole. I am new to Good Reads and am so excited I found it! I love to read pretty much anything but urban fantasy and paranormal fiction are my favorites. I am from Washington where it rains far to often. I am a writer getting ready to publish my first book and can't wait! I hoping to make lots of friends on here so send me a message or friend request and we can chat:)
Hi! I recently joined goodreads, mainly for the recommendations, which have been great so far. I've always loved mystery, including noir, and have been a longtime fantasy fan, especially more creative, non-epic, humorous stuff. I didn't even know UF existed until reading Jim Butcher's Dresden Files, and I got hooked--it's the unlikely combination of two of my favorite genres. I'm interested in non-PNR (I can't stand romance), somewhat lighter-toned UF books and would love suggestions!

. Also, you should check out the Bartimaeus trilogy starting with
. It isn't urban fantasy; it's YA fantasy and very good. Lots of humor in there. There is a fourth book in the "trilogy," but I didn't think it was as good as the first three. Here's my review for the fourth book (no spoilers for any of the books in it). http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Hello, my name is Nicole Rae and just wanted to say hi since I'm not far from you guys either. I'm in Washington about an hour from Portland:) It's nice to find some users who are close by.
Hi everyone,I just joined your group and look forward to hearing and sharing about some great books. I'm a writer and middle school teacher from central Mass. So I'm always looking for great YA books for my kids (and me!) and adult books for me. My own book Unforeseen is an adult urban fantasy being released soon.
Thanks,
Lauren
