Juliann Whicker | 15 comments Hello! I am Juliann, 31, 4 kids, no pets, living with my dh in southern Ohio. I like good UF, love to find new books and series to read. I liked Iron king series, fun, also the summoning series. I'm torn about reading series that aren't finished, but on the other hand reading an entire series that is out in one sitting is very bad for circulation:)

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 204 comments Welcome to the group Juliann!

Al Armstrong I'm Al, and I've become addicted to urban fantasy via the Dresden Files. I've gotta admit (and maybe it's a guy thing) that my favorite aspect of urban fantasy is transformation, that is, the way that the heros become stronger, more determined, and more clearly defined by the challenges that they encounter.

P.S. Just to be honest, I feel I should add "Vampires don't sparkle, dammit!"

message 455: by Juliann (new)

Juliann Whicker | 15 comments Welcome Al. Personally I think if they drink blood and aren't alive they can sparkle if they want. Actually it bothers me more that they have souls. Vampires shouldn't be free to choose. That's what makes them scary.

I do like metamorphosis.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 204 comments Al wrote: "P.S. Just to be honest, I feel I should add "Vampires don't sparkle, dammit!"

Amen! Hallelujah!!

(I'm on the side of no sparkling. It just kills that whole creepy vampire bad.)

Ed Nemo (ed_nemo) | 112 comments Hello everyone. I am Nemo. I am a Computer Engineer from Richmong VA that reads non-stop. I am a huge fan of Jim Butcher and Simon R Green and have found that my favorite genre is Urban Fantasy. (I am also the biggest comic book geek that you are likely to meet.) I subscibed to this group to find out what other people are reading. I am always interested in finding the next greatest author or series.

Besides comics, urban fantasy and computers, I also teach practical combat. If you have a question about comics, guns or other weaponry I'll be happy to help you.

Actually, I don't mind the sparkling so much (although Shera is right - it does wreck the creepy vibe). I think it was the 400-years-old-and-still-suffering-from-teen-angst thing that turned me off.

And thanks to everyone for their warm welcomes (and recommendations too)!

message 460: by Mar (new)

Mar | 13 comments Hi I'm Mar. I really love reading. When I'm reading I forget everything and everyone so it really relaxes me. My favourite type of books are Urban fantasy although I don't read only those (not always anyway). Actually anything including fantasy, paranormal and the like is of interest to me.
This is the first group I joined and I'm looking forward to see how things go :)

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 204 comments Hi Mar!! Those are the order in which I love my genres too. UF, Epic Fantasy,a nd then PNR. ^_-

message 462: by Bastard (new)

Bastard | 30 comments I'm Bastard, how's that for an intro?

Anyways, I joined some months back, did some recommendations if I remember correctly, but found the amount of discussion a bit overwhelming, so I stayed a bit away. Two weeks ago I decided to start my own blog and then remembered this group, and thought I'd give it another shot and plan to remain active for the time being.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 204 comments Welcome Bastard! Did notice you floating around. The amounts of conversations can be a bit over whelming.

Love that the blog is named Bastard Books. Is the header an image from the Bastard anime?

message 464: by Bastard (new)

Bastard | 30 comments No, it's from Claymore anime/manga.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 204 comments That's what I thought!! Claire I assume?

message 466: by Bastard (new)

Bastard | 30 comments That is correct, speaking of that I need to catch up to the manga. I'm like 2 volumes behind.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 204 comments I haven't read the manga. Though I should, it would be nice to get past the stopping point in the Anime.

message 468: by Bastard (new)

Bastard | 30 comments The anime ruined the story. The final arc it deviated into crap (it was great until then). So if you do, make sure you re-read that arc in manga form and go from there. I think it was volume 7.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 204 comments If I ever get my hands on them will do!! (But I tend to only watch anime, and only read a few manga.)

message 470: by Bastard (new)

Bastard | 30 comments I used to be like that, but don't have time for anime anymore, so I read manga when I can. The upside is that the manga, storywise, is usually much better than most animes.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 204 comments Yeah, that's how it normally is. I stick with anime because I can do other things while watching it.

message 472: by Bastard (new)

Bastard | 30 comments Shera (Book Whispers) wrote: "Yeah, that's how it normally is. I stick with anime because I can do other things while watching it."

Since I watch the Japanese versions with subs, then I can't do that. I have to pay full attention.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 204 comments Yeah. I prefer dubs, it's been bothering me when I buy a series and it's only subbed. Oh, well.

message 474: by Bastard (new)

Bastard | 30 comments I'm quite the opposite, dubs make the anime seem more infantile and can't take them seriously. Only dub I've enjoyed that I can recall is the Cowboy Bebop one.

I remember watching Yu Yu Hakusho on Cartoon Network and thinking it was a piece of shit. Years later tried the subbed version and it's currently one of my favorites.

Anyways, I think we've strayed a bit of the UF discussion.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 204 comments Yes we have!! And I'll stay away from the topic of sub verses dubs. Some people just get to crazy about it.

Cindy, don't forget you can download free apps and turn your phone into an ereader for nothing... Kindle has some great ones... :) I'm only a recent convert but am not going back now...!

p.s. Hi everyone, looking forward to seeing what's happening here... Urban Fantasy is an interesting genre title and not something I've seen used before. Upfront: I'm a new writer and need to check out more of the content to see whether my novel should be tagged to it... I like to read earth-bound sci-fi action/adventure thrillers. Michael Crichton is a much missed favourite of mine...

message 477: by Lola (new)

Lola (lolasreviews) Hello, I'm lolita. I am new to goodreads and this group. I really love to read, it is one of my few hobbies. And I'm looking for some place to share my ideas about the books I read. So I found goodreads and this group. I read mostly urban fantasy, with a bit of romance, I also read YA books. I also like manga and anime, but mostly I just read books, because I tend to think animes cost me too much time and manga's are expensive for the time spent reading. I really like books that have something that's original. Somtimes I really have difficulties choosing new books to buy so I hope you can give me some reccomendations.

Hey there all. My names Dustin and I'm a college student, avid reader, and an amateur writer. You can find me at Absolute Write under the name Darkshore, you can also check out my blog at dustinbishop.wordpress.com for my thoughts on writing and my book reviews. Glad to meet you all. :D

message 479: by Ghunterhanks (new)

Ghunterhanks | 7 comments Hi Everyone,

I'm Greg Hanks. I teach mostly developmental writing at a community college (and write too). Although reading out of genre is good, most of my fun reading is fantasy or sci-fi. Current favs include Rachel Caine, Carrie Vaughn, S.M. Stirling (wherever you count him), and on the sci-fi side, David Weber. Some YA stuff too; it feels hypocritical to encourage my students to read and then ignore what they're reading. Anyway, peace!

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 204 comments Great pick of authors Greg!

message 481: by Windypicnic (new)

Windypicnic (garbagebooks) Hi, nice to meet you all!

My name is Shiori. I work in media communications and I'm completing my Master of Letters (because I'm a tragic word nerd). On one side I really love my academic books but on the other I'm allllll about exciting genre stories. I particularly enjoy urban fantasy and science fiction/SFR books. Authors I'm currently digging include Ann Aguirre, Philippa Ballantine, Diana Rowland and Sara Creasy. I really hope to broaden my UF horizons here! It's nice to meet you all. :)

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 204 comments Welcome Shiori.

That last author is kind of new too me. I'll have to look into reading some thing by Creasy.

message 483: by Ash (new)

Ash Stirling | 1 comments G'day, I'm Ash all the way from sunny Australia.

I'm an avid reader, but (ironically) I haven't actual read much UF - something I mean to rectify. I have watched plenty of UF TV shows & movies, which got me into the genre. I think the first was back in the 90s with the sadly short lived Brimstone.

When I'm not walking the dog or looking for work I scribble a bit.

message 484: by Sunny (new)

Sunny | 3 comments Hi, I'm Sunny. I always wanted to be a vampire when I was younger til I found out that would be stupid with a name like Sunny. Then I grew up, got a job,got married and had a baby. My husband ordered True Blood on Netflix one day and I called in sick for work the next day because of sleep deprivation. I realized I hated cliffhangers so to Borders I went. I HATED reading in school so I was astonished how much I loved it when its not assigned. So here I am now joining UF since I have no friends that read unless Oprah tells them to. I don't like what Oprah reads. I'm a watcher mostly, trying to find recommendations so I can get over my Fever series blues. I can't seem to find anything to keep me up past 1am chewing my fingernails off now. But I enjoy reading about all things UF and PnR and anything about a salior with an alabatross around his neck. Wait no I don't. My husband loves that i read now because for any forgotten birthday or anniversary, he just goes to Amazon and emails me credit. Hi everybody!

message 485: by Nichole (new)

Nichole Ballard | 3 comments Hiyee!
I love UF mainly because I use it as a way to escape my very boring life, but then it makes me depressed. (I was in a funk for a week after my Dresden Files marathon because I'm apparently not a wizard) anyway, I'm a born- again college student trying to make it as a freelance photographer. Looking 4 good books to fulfill time until something interesting happens.

I was looking for something other than the usual fantasy when a friend recommended Anita Blake and then i came upon Dresden and got addicted to UF, i think i've read most of the urban fantasy available these days it is good to be here and i am looking forward to finding new series.

message 488: by Brett (new)

Brett Damon (litesneeze) | 1 comments My name is Brett, and I'm a public servant living near Canberra, Australia.
I've always liked Urban Fantasy but I didn't know it had a genre all of its own. I read a lot of books but Urban Fantasy are my favourites. I got hooked with Neil Gaiman and Jim Butcher. I've got many books yet to read.
I don't have many Goodreads friends so add me if you'd like.

message 489: by Coral (new)

Coral (coralm) | 26 comments Hello!

I'm new to the group (obviously). I'm always looking for new and interesting UF to read as well as a place to talk about what I'm reading with other UF fans.

Patricia Briggs and Diana Rowland are two of my favorites at the moment.

Butterflycager | 15 comments Hello, everyone. My name is Jules, and I'm a SAHM currently living in Frankfort, KY. When I'm not chasing my children around, I spend a lot of time reading, and urban fantasy is one of my favorite genres. I read so much of it last year that I actually got a little burnt out, but I recently read Side Jobs: Stories From the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher, and now I'm back again. My favorite UF authors are Emma Bull, Patricia Briggs, Jim Butcher, and Charles de Lint. Glad to be here!

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 204 comments Welcome Butterflycager!!

I just can't imagine getting burned out on UF. I know PNR burns me out . . . UF is my lady! ^_-

Oh, I know! Isn't it terrible? :( I love her Alpha & Omega books too, but I always feel betrayed when she releases one of those because I'd always rather have more Mercy.

message 499: by Susan (new)

Susan Stec (thegratefulundead) | 95 comments I haven't read any of her other series, but I will. She does such an amazing job with visuals, paying special attention to pack politics, which I love. I can feel the weaknesses and the strengths of her character's animal side as well as their human side. And see how they affect both. Their nature comes alive on her pages.

message 500: by Chrysoula (new)

Chrysoula Tzavelas | 35 comments Hi there! I'm Chrysoula and I've loved urban fantasy ever since reading War For The Oaks when I was a kid. I remember being confused for a while about whether 'urban fantasy' was 'contemporary fantasy' or if books like Glen Cook's Garrett Files (taking place in a fantasy city) qualified. These days, though, there's a lot more urban fantasy to choose from. I'm fairly choosy but it's still definitely my most-read genre. I've read the first few books of a number of long series-- The Hollows, Mercy Thompson, Kitty Norville, but I'm only completely caught up on the Dresden Files. I also like the kind of YA that clearly crosses the lines into UF, and the filing difference between those two genres is one of my pet interests.

Nice to be here!
