SOLVED. Children's/YA (possibly) about a boy hiding in the attic [s]

Hello all,

I'm looking for a book I read as a child, I'd guess roughly 22 years ago.

As far as I remember, the story was about a boy who had to leave his home (possibly because of the death of his parent/guardian) and ended up living/hiding in the attic of an old house. I think that the occupants became aware of someone's presence there so he started to haunt them/pretend he was a ghost.

It's probably a MG/YA book, considering my age at the time, but I did move up to adult stories fairly quickly once I exhausted this particular section at the local library, so I could be wrong.

This is all the information I have to offer, I'm embarrassed to say. My searches on the internet have led me nowhere, so I hope there's someone here who can help.

Thanks for the suggestion, but sadly it doesn't fit. I'm sure there was no mom in the picture, and the house he was hiding in wasn't his.

Among the Hidden (1998) by Margaret Peterson Haddix? Not sure about the ghost reference, but the boy hides in an attic.

How about The Ghost of Windy Hill by Clyde Robert Bulla?

Neither of the two, I'm sad to say. "Among the Hidden" because of the sci-fi elements (also I'm sure I read the book before 1998), and "The Ghost of Windy Hill" doesn't sound right either. Also I'm pretty sure the main character/narrator is the "ghost".

I found the book at my parents' house in a pile of old books that my mother kept from my childhood. Go mom!
