Pretty simple for me:
Watchmen
Top Ten
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen V1 and V2
I haven't read Miracleman yet, but that may be up there.

I haven't read too many comics by Alan Moore. For me the best one is Top Ten. According to me, it is criminally under appreciated.Watchmen just didn't do it for me (may be I am from Mars!!).
Heard good things about Swamp thing and From Hell.
I wholeheartedly agree about Top Ten.
From Hell is a massive piece of work. It's very detailed and gives his theory on who Jack the Ripper was. Some stuff didn't make sense until I read the annotations in the back.
I didn't know much about Swamp Thing before I read it and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I wouldn't put it near the top though, more of a worthwhile read, IMHO.

I see what you did there. :P I need to pick up the absolute eventually.

I think it is all worth looking into. you should start with what seems to your liking subject- and art-wise.My favorites are:Promethea
Watchmen
Swamp Thing
From Hell is an important work, too. As is V for Vendetta.
Personally, I didn't care for Top Ten. Likewise I'm sure Promethea is not for everyone (it delves heavily into occult and magical world view).
@Juha, I would agree about reading all of it. Just about everything has something to say and offers some form of entertainment and/or commentary.
I haven't checked out Promethea for the very reason you said although I do like JHW. Also haven't read Tom Strong either.
Appreciate your opinion and thanks for contributing!

I don't love A.M. but both Watchmen and From Hell were epically awesome. Still need to read V for Vendetta.
Guys, sorry a little late to this discussion. Other than having Watchmen, I was looking at Promethea. I see from above, only one suggested it.
Is is not worth it?
Also, I see that he is releasing a full length novel, Jerusalem soon. Getting a great deal of buzz.
I can't think of anything that he has done outside of graphic novels that I've read. I heard of Jerusalem but don't know anything about it. Was curious about his "electro comix"

Anyone have read Captain Britain by Alan Moore? Is it any good? the omnibus is out of print and is pretty expensive tought, but is a series i want to get into. Also, i'm waiting for his series on Miracleman get omni treatment
I too am waiting for the Miracleman omnibus. It's the last major comic work from him I need to read.
I have the Cap Britain. It's a good read with nice art by Davis. It isn't groundbreaking like Watchmen to put it in perspective.

Kind of, though my knowledge of Doc Savage is pretty scant. It's a homage to pulp heroes in general, and the overall feel is a bit lighter than the impressions I had of DS. Every issue was a new adventure, which I enjoyed. Not every issue was great, but I liked it. Some disagree, but it's one of those books I think people might have loved if it wasn't written by Moore. Or not. It's not one of his best, but it seems sometimes like he's not allowed to write anything that isn't as brilliant as Watchmen. :)
If only miracle man didn't end in such a Morrison way. Vol 1 was great, and 2 not bad, but 3 was terrible.
I love how Olympus ended. Miracleman is up there with Watchmen for me. Anyone who hasn't read Miracleman should stop what they're doing and read it ASAP lol.
Well he must've been high as a kite when he wrote volume 3 is all I'm saying ha ha. It's nothing like the previous two volumes.

The idea is to compile a list of books on each subject/topic from the group members and have a central thread that people can use to decide where to begin.
Preferably, the suggestions should be limited to stories that are available in some type of hardcover: Absolute, Omnibus, Deluxe HC, etc.
Make as many suggestions as you like, but do try to keep it to an "essential/best reads".
