When sixteen-year-old Amanda Verner’s family decides to move from their small mountain cabin to the vast prairie, she hopes it is her chance for a fresh start. She can leave behind the memory of the past winter; of her sickly ma giving birth to a baby sister who cries endlessly; of the terrifying visions she saw as her sanity began to slip, the victim of cabin fever; and most of all, the memories of the boy she has been secretly meeting with as a distraction from her pain. The boy whose baby she now carries.

When the Verners arrive at their new home, a large cabin abandoned by its previous owners, they discover the inside covered in blood. And as the days pass, it is obvious to Amanda that something isn’t right on the prairie. She’s heard stories of lands being tainted by evil, of men losing their minds and killing their families, and there is something strange about the doctor and his son who live in the woods on the edge of the prairie. But with the guilt and shame of her sins weighing on her, Amanda can’t be sure if the true evil lies in the land, or deep within her soul.

Started today, on Chapter 6. This is NOT ya but I'm kind of grateful for it. (view spoiler)[I'm so curious about this devil figure she keeps talking about, and what happened in the cabin over the last winter. I'm loving the horror part of the book so far. The main character is very sensible if you ask me, and I like that she's not a prude despite her family's strong religious rules. <\spoiler> (hide spoiler)]

The book is really short, so I'm going to finish it, definitely. I didn't mind the writing so much but I was listening to the audiobook so I wasn't paying very close attention to it.

Starting Tonight
Initial Thoughts: (view spoiler)[Hoping to start this tonight. The blurb makes the story sound intriguing with a dash of teen pregnancy and possibly ghosts or at least some paranormal threat. Hope this is a little more scary than some of the other YA 'horror' genre books I've read recently. I'm curious how the family will deal with her pregnancy given that it was both sort of taboo to have a baby unwed back in the day as well as have a baby unwed. Sure younger adults were living more adult lives since their lifespan was much shorter. But I find it curious and kind of funny how the blurb mentions a baby sister who cries endlessly when she is on the way to bring another baby into the home. Or maybe she won't I guess we'll see?? 20% (view spoiler)[ Amanda met a boy in town and they've met up and fooled a few times. Sadly for her she becomes pregnant and he leaves. For the past few months her dark secret is more than just this boy, in fact, she's been praying for her baby sister Hannah to die. The baby was born both blind and deaf so she's a lot more shall i say difficult than a regular baby. Something happened last winter that we don't know of yet so well see. (hide spoiler)]

Amanda loses her baby tragically and for some strange reason never goes to talk to the Doctor Who lives a mile or so away. Now she thinks she’s being haunted by her dead baby but was already hearing Crazy things before she lost the baby. We still don’t know what happened to her last winter when she says the devil was in her. (hide spoiler)]

Finished (view spoiler)[You know this book got sooo dang good especially near the end. And then it just ended. Like an epic cliffhanger with no end in sight. I feel cheated and a bit pissed. After everything Emily and Amanda went through as well as their younger siblings we as readers are what, left to make up our own ending?!? Wtf, that’s not why I read. I want a completed story even if the ending is unpleasant and nothing like I wanted.
On a side note this was certainly a creepy read and it really flew by. There’s lots of storytelling that perhaps was unnecessary but I was very engaged and particularly conecerned for Amanda. Im also left wondering if her baby daddy really was the one who told her father about the prairie, I mean was he so much of a piece of shitty shit he would send a family there knowing what did and could happen to them. I can’t even do a proper review because I’m kinda mad and unfulfilled. I’m just going to assume the worse and guess that amanda and her siblings are not going to make it. Whatever evil is haunting them won’t let them go. I do think they were probably doomed anyways after her moms Illness and amandas ‘devil’ encounter. The writing was good, interesting and the story was fascinating but that end brings me so much pause I don’t know if I could or would recommend this. (hide spoiler)]

How did u enjoy the ending? (view spoiler)[ I’m normally not one who enjoys being left hanging but I think it kind of worked, like not knowing if the evil spread or will they all even survive, I thought it worked for the story. Now that I’ve had a few days to deal, I actually think this is the best ending possible. It’s clear there’s no real HEA in sight if that makes sense. I mean after what happened to the lil baby, a little more death is nothing. But I do wish or at least hope it spreads to where her baby daddy is. If he really set all this up, he deserves a hell on earth lol (hide spoiler)]

First Quarter - (view spoiler)[This didn't begin how I anticipated it to. Poor Amanda is pregnant and, given the time period and her family's poverty-stricken circumstances, I feel so, so sorry for her! I knew Henry would fail to do the correct thing by her. It makes me so angry to read of men deeming the unborn baby the women's fault or issue to deal with.

I wish there was more creation of setting as everything is a bit unclear, at the moment. I'm also anticipating the horror elements to start soon, considering we are a quarter of the way through and the book is so short. The only hint is that 'something' happened with Amanda, last winter, and her hatred of her youngest, sick sibling. (hide spoiler)]

Second Quarter - (view spoiler)[The family have moved to a new home and the setting has been detailed far more. Their new home is blood-soaked and the area around it is full of poisonous animals and other natural threats. The unnatural ones are surely soon to appear, though...

Emily, despite still mad at Amanda, is still attempting to protect her. I hope they can regain their close, sisterly bond and that Zeek doesn't get in the way. (hide spoiler)]

I kinda liked her. She was annoying but there was still something about her I couldn't help but appreciate. Maybe her feistiness.

Third Quarter - (view spoiler)[The details of her losing her baby were horrific. I wanted a prolonged focus on her emotions during this time, though. This book feels too rushed. The horror elements finally begin after this, but they failed to actually terrify me. Again, I wanted an elongated scene for ultimate suspense. (hide spoiler)]

Third Quarter - (view spoiler)[The end portion definitely gave me the blood, gore, and horror I was so long anticipating but, unfortunately, not enough to reconcile my feelings for this book. The horror really upped the ante from the scene where the ants cover the baby, poor thing! Scenes like this one had me gripped but there wasn't enough inbetween to keep me continually engaged. I also didn't appreciate how open-ended the conclusion was, given that this was a stand-alone. (hide spoiler)]

True, at first she was quite opinionated and unsupportive but, overall, I liked her character.
