In this reading, we dig deeper into the brutality of Packingtown, and even the brutality of capitalism itself. The prime example for this is the scene at the end of our assignment. In the scene, Jurgis strangled Ona's former employer after she told Jurgis that her employer had raped her, and then told her to stay quiet to keep her job. This series of events shows how much the family has changed over the time that they have been in Chicago. When the book first starts, they are frivolous and happy, spending money they don't really have on a wedding. By the end of the reading, Jurgis is angry and brooding, and people are drowning in the mud on the streets. Such a lovely book.{sarcasm}
