I know from experience that there are books out there that miss their mark. I would love to know which books you guys think they are.

Frida (leothil) | 5 comments Shatter Me was a really big miss in my opinion. It wanted to be dystopian, but the setting had absolutely nothing to do with the story, so it could have taken place anytime, anywhere. Every single character felt flat and irritated me, and the writing style just felt pretentious. It was an even bigger disappointment since I'd heard so much good about the series and wanted to like it.

Jennifer (genoveffa) | 48 comments Four Blondes is my most detested book ever. I finished it only because I felt like I had to because I paid for it. But I was very happy to put it in the trash afterwards. Yes, I threw it in the garbage can rather than donated it to the library which I normally do. I felt that I was saving someone else much pain and suffering.

Marybeth Buskirk | 9 comments The Catcher in The Rye! The writing style was horrible and all Hokden did was be an angsty yeen and whine throughout the novel. If I had to read the word phony one more time, I would have screamed!

message 5: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie We had to read Inexcusable for a class in college and I could not stand it. Came off as a rape apology more than anything.

message 6: by Adele (new)

Adele White Space by Isla J. Bick!!! I literally can't stand that book. I have it at the back on my top shelf. Or it's in a bag, going to be given to a second hand book store :P

message 7: by Sara (new)

Sara Beauty Queens by Libba Bray. Couldn't stand it.

Evelyn | 3 comments Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway. Literally upset me because this old man put all this effort into catching the stupid fish all for nothing. I can`t with this book.

I completely agree with you. Some classics should not be classics!

I tried so hard to read that book, but it was so confusing that I literally started to pull my hair out. I gave that book away soooo fast!

Oh my goodness that book makes me wonder why Hemingway is considered one of the great writers.

Good to know as I was on the fence after seeing some reviews. Will skip it.

Loathed The Night Circus... my family and I ended up playing football with it when I'd finished it. Worst thing I've ever read probably.

message 14: by Brenna (new)

Brenna | 7 comments Allegiant from the Divergent series ruined the entire trilogy for me. Also, East of Eden was horrid. Straight up Bible fanfiction which is most definitely not my cup of tea, especially when I read it as a sophomore in high school for an English class with a Steinbeck obsessed teacher.

I'm so surprised I made it through that book!!! I was reading it at my cottage and had the constant urge to throw it in the lake.

I can't stand Steinbeck -- we read Of Mice and Men, the Pearl, and Grapes of Wrath... when I was in college the theatre put on the play version of Grapes and I liked that much better, I just despise the way Steinbeck writes.

Marie (mennufer) | 11 comments Lost, by Gregory Maguire. This was back when Wicked was just starting to be really popular. The bookstore didn't have Wicked, but Lost looked interesting. The main character turned out to be incredibly unlikable, and not in a so-bad-they're-good kind of way. She's a pest, a pathological liar, and just a horrible person in general. I wanted to drop-kick her into next year right from the first chapter. When her entire, actually tragic, backstory was finally revealed, I just didn't care. The only reason I read the whole book was because I paid full price for it.

Also, the blurb teased a Jack the Ripper story. Totally didn't deliver.

Allison (exwiretamer) | 1 comments Me and Earl and the Dying Girl.
Worst book I've read in a while. I hated almost all the characters, I thought the main character was the stupidest guy ever. I don't even know how to explain how stupid it was.
And the main character kept talking about how horrible the book was which made it so hard to continue reading.

message 19: by Alice_ (new)

Alice_ (alice_x) Wuthering Heights. I don't even know why I even finished it but it was definintely the worst book I ever read.
Look who's back by Timur Vermes and the alphabet house by Jussi Adler-Olsen weren't that good either. I didn't even finished them. I wish I wouldn't have read them at all!

I actually still have the book. except it's in a bag on the floor waiting to be given to a used bookstore.

Britt | 4 comments I haaaaaaaaaated Heart of Darkness. HAAAAATED it. Had to it both in college and it was the worst it was like straight up self-punishment to read. Didn't even finish it, I made my way through class discussions using Sparknotes and my supreme bullshitting skills. It was just so boring and intentionally dense that it pissed me off.
