Trying to find the name of a Sci-Fi book, read in the 1980's originally but it's probably from 1970's or earlier.
Definitely aimed at Adult audience.
The book was about a young noble who kills his psychotic parents, runs away, becomes a thief and ends up in possession of a "time stone" ring which allows him to see bits of the future and manipulate small things. He see's his death in the ring and joins the military to become a combat hybrid to change his identity in an attempt to cheat death. Ring gets destroyed, searches for the larger time stone to gain possession.
Character names I can remember: Nels, Jane Moire(?), Elves(not the Tolkien type)
