"...Rishabh hadn’t shaved for three days and looked shabby sitting alone in the interrogation room at the Police Headquarters. He had not taken a bath that day and wore the same black shirt which he was wearing a day before. The room was dark with only a tube light on the ceiling facing the table and three chairs placed in the centre of the room. He occupied one of those chairs.
His mother had been sending home-made food for him which had been approved by Girish Borkar as a special case. While he was slowly finishing his breakfast, his mind was almost lost and he was swallowing every bite with a heavy heart.
Girish was noticing his moves from the observation mirror for almost half an hour before he entered the room and took the seat opposite to him.
‘How are you feeling, Rishabh?’
Rishabh didn’t say anything and didn’t even raise his head to look at Girish. He continued with his meal quietly.
Girish continued, ‘We have known each other for years, since the day I first caught you for drunk driving when you were in college and I was only an inspector. You were only Sadashiv Shenoy’s son then. Since then we have grown up being good friends and have tasted success in our lives. I want to trust you.’
Rishabh raised his eyes once, wiped his hands and mouth with the napkin and closed the tiffin box.
‘You have to tell me everything if you want me to help you,’ insisted Girish.
‘I have told you everything already. You are wasting your time on me and only giving more time to the real culprit to destroy any remaining evidence. I have not done anything….NOTHING at all. Not even what she claimed and not what you claim now.’
‘I am not claiming anything but everything is going against you.’
‘Then hang me. Anyway I have nothing left. My wife and children are not with me anymore. No one believes me. It’s better that I die than live a life worse than hell.’
Girish sighed, pressed his hand against Rishabh’s wrist and said, ‘You take care. I shall come later.’..."
