My supernatural protag is hoping for scientific explanations, and my SF protag has gone through some medical treatments that a geneticist would tell me aren't possible. I would love to write a true mash-up someday, but I would want to get as much of the science as right as possible, because that makes the handwavey stuff easier to accept.
Even though the world of science seems at odds with that of the supernatural, I enjoy writing both. Researching possible future medical breakthroughs, new technologies, the possibilities of space travel is so much fun. So is scaring people.
But I also like to ponder the gray areas in-between. Is there really no overlap between the quantifiable and the presumed imaginary? Is that ghost really a ghost, or the flicker of a curtain, or a momentary glimpse into another dimension, an alternate universe? I've read the odd article in which a physicist or other scientist bemoans these attempts to explain what they consider nonsense, but I still enjoy thinking about it. It's story fodder, and I enjoy writing stories.
I also test my protagonists, sometimes to excess; maybe it's a roundabout way of testing myself. Yank their life out from under them, and see what happens. See how they respond. Put them in a place they never thought they'd be, experiencing things they never imagined. Break their hearts, give them hope, let them laugh once in a while.
