Yue | 135 comments Hello,

I am looking for books with an MC with unusual/awful name. Could be male or female. The name has to be relevant to the story, i.e., boys make fun of her/him; people remark about the unusual name; MC prefers to go by a nickname or her/his last name, etc.

I don't have any example in English :S

Thanks,

Yue.

Electric Bubbles (electricbubbles) | 56 comments Holes Stanley Yelnats. It's the same name spelled forwards and backwards and the plot does center around it a bit. I loved it!

Ok, I'm going to just offer up an author's name. He just enjoys giving his characters odd names, is all I can figure out. Terry Pratchett.

Another suggestion is for Gail Carriger. She has 3 series--2 are finished, one is on book 2. They are all set in the same steampunk world. And did I mention humourous?

The main character in John the Balladeer never reveals his last name, despite pressure from others. John the Balladeer

Also, My Name Is Sus5an Smith: The 5 Is Silent

The Inspector Morse series:

https://www.goodreads.com/series/5046...

"Morse prefers to use only his surname, and is generally evasive when asked about his first name, sometimes joking that it is Inspector. At the end of Death Is Now My Neighbour, it is revealed to be Endeavour. Two-thirds of the way through the television episode based on the book, he gives the cryptic clue "My whole life's effort has revolved around Eve".[1] In the series, it is noted that Morse's reluctance to use his Christian name led to his receiving the nickname Pagan while attending Stamford School....."

Jeremy | 194 comments The Starship Troupers series by Christopher Stasheff (1st book is A Company of Stars).
The main character's nickname is Ramou, which you later find out is short for Scaramouche.

Donna | 63 comments The Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer. There's a few times where Artemis' name gets mentioned. I remember he gets made fun of for having a girl's name once or twice. And there's the connection to being a hunter instead of prey as Artemis is a Greek hunting goddess. The books also have code running along the bottom, and one part of one of the codes translates to "Fowl by name, foul by nature".

She goes by Cornelia which seems ordinary enough, but her name is actually Cornelia Street (like the road)

message 18: by AquaMoon (new)

AquaMoon (aqua_moon) | 12 comments Kimberly Lemming often gives her characters unusual names that are relevant to who they are or what they do. For example, a character named Cinnamon whose family owns a spice farm. These are more "adult" books, so be warned.

Damon_A | 4 comments Really enjoying this thread — thanks to everyone who's shared such quirky and memorable character names! Thought I’d add one that isn’t quite as outlandish but still carries emotional weight: Liesel Meminger from The Book Thief.
Her name might not stand out as particularly strange, but it has this quiet strength to it that fits the tone of the story so well. It feels rooted in something real and vulnerable, which makes it all the more powerful given the book’s themes. Sometimes it's not about the weirdness of a name, but how well it fits the soul of the character.
