While meeting with her husband Joe in Central Park, Maya watches in horror as two men with ski masks brutally murder Joe in an apparent robbery gone wrong. Now, two weeks after Joe's funeral, Maya plays the video from her nanny-cam and sees Joe sitting on the living room couch with their 2-year-old daughter Lily. Maya confronts nanny Isabella with the video, but Isabella reacts with pepper spray in Maya's face and when Maya recovers both Isabella and the video are gone.
Maya had been a special ops helicopter pilot in Iraq and after a tragic shelling of a civilian vehicle during the rescue attempt of American soldiers, Maya was 'encouraged' to resign her commission and leave the Army. Shortly before her return from overseas, Maya was devastated to hear that her sister, Claire, had been tortured and murdered during a home invasion. Now she has lost her husband as well and Maya senses that the 2 murders have to be related in some way. Her investigation into the crimes lead her into Joe's past as well as that of his ultra-wealthy family. She uncovers secrets that someone is willing to kill to protect and Maya may very well be the next target.
This is definitely not one of my favorite Coben books as there are just too many coincidences and unbelievable scenarios. However, he definitely writes an exciting story that is very fast-paced and quick to read. If you are a fan you will probably like it well enough but if you have never read Coben before, please don't start with this one.
