SOLVED. YA/MG book about witches; illustrated cover of cat on window-ledge [s]

I have searched Google and am pulling at my hair because I can only remember the cover. It was an artistic illustration of a tabby/brown cat on a brick (?) window ledge. The whole picture was yellow/orange and warm, as if the sun were setting.

Of what I can remember of the plot, it was about a young witch (def magic involved) with her cat familiar. I think the author's first or last name began with D. It would have been out 10-or-so years ago, as a mass-market paperback.

Please tell me I'm not imagining this book!!
