A feature by Chinese CCTV on the PLASOF. Slightly shorter than the history channel documentary but don't let that get you down. All in Mandarin however, so best interpret from the images. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phETS...

Michael Mandaville | 1 comments Samuel - thank you for an excellent discussion about PRC Intelligence capabilities. I wish you were a resource when I wrote my novels about Communist China and their internal squabbles.

Thank you for the kind works Michael and welcome to the group, I'm sure you'll enjoy it here ;)

And I think I've seen your book somewhere. "Stealing Thunder", is the title yes?

Readers of China-oriented spy thrillers may also be interested in North Korea storylines. I just finished David Baldacci's "The Target", which includes plots between both Pyongyang and Washington to eliminate each other's leaders. Just this week (first week of May, 2017), the North Koreans accused the CIA of plotting the assassination of Kim Jong-un. Probably a lie, but a weird coincidence with my having read this novel. My full review here:

The Spy's Daughter by Adam Brookes

Cover art for the Spy's Daughter has been revealed. Third in the best spy novel series focusing on modern China. It's about an MSS illegals program in the USA that's under threat, when one of its members, turns out to be naturalized enough, that she does not wish to commit treason against the country of her birth. This does not sit well with the MSS higher ups who refuse to have their most promising long term HUMINT project blown due to the whims of a 19 year old prodigy. So, she goes on the run, hunted by Asia's top intelligence service. Standing between the target and the wolves are an SIS officer and an SIS asset.

A good article about what the MSS does in the counter intelligence business. Hint: Things get nasty, brutish and short. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/20/wo...

Needs a smoking gun. But I digress.

The Spy's daughter is coming along nicely. Brookes goes into a bit of techno thriller territory with the mechanics of drone swarms, something the PLA is working on.

Recent book I'm reading has an MSS officer in Ukraine as a side character. Author mistakes Zhongnanhai as the MSS office (it's in Huairen garden) but does capture their pragmatic operating principles.

Item of interest and research material for those thinking about writing a story set in China.
This concerns a device that makes it a nightmare to conduct espionage in the PRC. Massive investment in cameras that have totally saturated every important nook and cranny in Beijing, are fitted with facial recognition software and will soon be hooked up to the world's finest Artificial Intelligence systems to predict the actions of everything they watch.

Well, it seems that it's Chinese New Year. I'll be reviewing Night Heron as soon as I can find an opportunity to do so. Awesome book. Realistic espionage in modern China, the second toughest environment to spy in these days (first being North Korea).

And then I'll move on to Spy games and the spy's daughter.

恭喜发财!
