I have just asked this but in "regular" discussion and I meant to post this for my fellow mystery lovers. Here goes. Please Please can someone explain the ending to me of To Love and Be Wise, Josephine Tey. I think I just missed the clues and definitely did not get Inspector Grants explanation. I have looked at reviews and analysis but at the risk of being terribly embarassed the lightbulb has not lit up in my brain. I might be making it much more difficult for myself but last line in book ? Is Searle a chameleon?

Not sure if these need to read in order. I placed a hold on the 1st book in the series, The Man in the Queue. Hopefully it arrives soon. TL&BW is the 4th book so it may take until fall for me to get to it. Hopefully you'll still remember what the book was about - hah!

For me it is "He could hardly wait", and it is Grant thinking of Superintendent Bryce's face when he makes his report to him. I wonder if you have some pages missing?
