Sorry not after the 80's, could be the later 70's
It's been a while since I read them, but Tami Hoag had a series of books that sounds similar to your description. May have been published too recently though...here's the first in the series. The Restless Heart

That's not it, but thanks for the suggestion. It was book 1 of 2 about brothers.A Harlequin or Silhouette with the longer format.
