Sarah-Vita I just finished reading the script for Episode 1, and really enjoyed it!! The scripts have FAR more description than I anticipated!
One thing that got me excited was the deleted/altered scenes. For instance, the very first one, where we see Ross in Virginia. In the original working script, he gets into a fight with the man he's playing cards with, but then laughs because it was just a joke.
I think the scene was good, but I'm glad they changed it. I like how it turned out!
I don't have my book handy right now (I'm not at home at the mo), but I know there are other deleted scenes, and more to come in the following episode scripts. Can't wait to read them!!

Okay, you've convinced me. I finished the book I was reading last night and was trying to figure out which on my "to read" list to read next. I've got this one queued up and ready to go on my Kindle now!

Last night I decided I had to follow along with the actual show so I could pick up the subtle differences. I can say with certainty that no real "scenes" from the final script were removed from Episdode 1--just a sentence or two or a shot here or there (like the card-playing one above). Of course we don't know what might have been removed from earlier drafts....

The one line that I was sorry they removed takes place when Ross goes to Trenwith to talk to Charles after bringing Demelza home and instead finds Elizabeth. The full line from Ross contains this removed bit: "It's not pretty to be made a fool of by one's feelings. To take a childish promise and build a future out of it."

And here is the whole passage from the book: “Since I met you,' he said, 'I've had no eyes and no thought for any other girl. When I was away nothing mattered about my coming back but this. If there was one thing I was sure of, it wasn't what I'd been taught by anyone else to believe, not what I learned from other people was the truth, but the truth that I felt in myself- about you.'

'Don't say any more.' She had gone very white. But for once her frailness did not stop him. It had to come out now.

'It isn't very pretty to have been made a fool of by one's own feelings,' he said. 'To take childish promises and build a-a castle out of them. And yet- even now sometimes I can't believe that all the things we said to each other were so trivial or so immature. Are you sure you felt so little for me as you pretend?”

Sarah-Vita I wish they would've kept that one in too!!

One I remember reading last night was from Episode 6, where Ross comes home and sneaks up on Demelza, and she says "This is a new device, creepin' in like a tom cat."
In the script, when Ross says "And how's my fair maiden?" he actually picks up baby Julia from her crib. In the episode, he doesn't :( It would've been cute to see that, but it did turn out well!
So far, all the slight changes they made seem to be for the better! :D
