Kat | 1178 comments I kept hoping against hope that the red ship would be sailed by Ragnar.

And oh, the joy when it was!!!

Looking forward to see what awaits them back in Wessex.

Kat | 1178 comments Guthred is a puppy an annoying git who reigns only because his enemies don't take him serious.

And St Cuthbert is suspiciously active in people's dreams.

Yeah, it looked like the ship was there to save Uhtred from slavery. glad that it worked out!

Last night, I wanted to finish the first part but when it ended the way it did I couldn't stop and had to see how it all ended. In consequence, I stayed up pretty late and finished this section too. I wasn't disappointed, so much happened in between :). I didn't expect Alfred would show up in this book at all.

I liked how generous Uhtred was with Guthred, I didn't expect that. St Cuthbert is not one of my favourites, either :). I think I definitely have to finish this book today, I can't wait to see how the war in Northumbria ends.

Ctgt | 629 comments It did seem pretty obvious when the ship kept after them no matter how hard Sverri(?) worked to lose them.

I wish I could blame things on St Cuthbert but like most religions, it's not the god who is the problem but the followers.

Kat | 1178 comments Uuuuuurrgh, and the kissing the dead saint on the mouth, that was just gross.

I was glad it wasn't drawn out too. Rescue after only one chapter!

Yeah, me either. I'm not really a fan, thankfully he wasn't too prevalent. I'm hoping he won't have much of a role in the third part, if at all.

We see Alfred's daughter again. She's fond of Uthred, and now old enough to be married off. Apparently to Uthred's Mercian cousin. Anyone think Uthred is going to end up saving her from him at some point? Maybe marrying her himself? He did mention his wife has a Christian priest. So whoever he's with in old age is Christian presumably.

And how about Hild the head of a nunnery? She was briefly in the series so far, but I hope we see more cameos of her in the future books too.

I've been having a feeling about that since the first time she was mentioned as an infant in book one, because Uhtred made a bit of a deal out of it, along the lines of "I suppose this must have been the first time I saw her, although I didn't know it yet" or something like that.

I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up with her at some point.

Ctgt | 629 comments I'm with you guys, they seem destined to end up together.

Kat | 1178 comments Maybe when he's Lord of Bebbanburg once again?

Suzanne | 1582 comments I agree, I think that Alfred's daughter is who Uthred will end up with.

I liked that Hild is eventually a saint.

I didn't see Guthred's betrayal coming last section, and I was really surprised how lenient Uhtred was with him. Really, everything that Uhtred warned him about happened.

I am really liking seeing Ragnar again - he is just so cheerful - kind of a larger than life character. And I like how he doesn't want to be king - smart man!

Maybe my favorite paragraph was when Uthred was trying to get his sword modified that day, and the blacksmith was too busy, and they discussed it and compromised that it'd be fixed that day. Lots of little subtle humor like that makes the book really enjoyable.

Haha. I used that quote about the blacksmith as my status update.

Ctgt | 629 comments Is he basing Hild on the real life Hilda of Whitby? I know there was a book not too long ago Hild Hild by Nicola Griffith

Kat | 1178 comments Stoooooooooop! Damn you, my TBR pile just went up +1

Suzanne | 1582 comments Interesting - it could be!

Sumant | 522 comments These chapters were awesome, Guthred kinda of betrays Uthred and hands him to the slavers so that he can get Alfridge's swords.

Uthred manages to survive the ordeal due to Finnan who is also some kind of Irish lord and was betrayed by his master.

In the end it is Alfred who finally saves Uthred, say whatever you may about him but I kind of think he is like Lannisters, they always pay their debts.

When Alfred comes to know from Hild what has befallen Uthred and when she promises him that she is going to build a nunnery he sends Ragnar with Steapa to rescue Uthred.

I think the only man who truly understands Alfred is the spy, who explains Uthred how Alfred is playing a long game using god to achieve his goals.
