Dawn | 3 comments Picture book I read ca. 1960 for children probably under 6 to 8 years of age. An inhabited island that is below sea level is protected from flooding by a tight ring of trees around the coastline. The trees have been neglected and sea water is beginning to leak through the dying trees. A boy does something to save the trees and keep the island and town from being destroyed by flooding.

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments Sounds like a lovely story.

Can you remember anything about the cover?
Were the illustrations colorful, realistic, full page, etc?
Part of a series?

Dawn | 3 comments The illustrations were in color and were more cartoon-like than realistic in style. Each scene took up an entire page with a sentence or two beneath. I'm almost certain it was not a part of a series. It was a hardcover book. it seems like the scene on the cover may have been one looking down on the tree-lined island in the ocean but I may be thinking of a scene inside the book.

I'm not sure why the trees protecting the island became neglected and began letting in sea water but there were people living there. Maybe they all got lazy, or busy or distracted and forgot about the trees but in the end a boy realized something must be done to save the island. I don't recall what it was the boy did for the trees but he saved them and saved the island.

Benjamin (browly) | 24 comments It's The King's Stilts by Dr. Seuss. The bad guy hides the stilts, so the king can't go out and motivate the cat army, so the cats don't chase away the nizzard birds that want to eat the trees. so the trees start to die and the water starts to flood the island. The boy gets the king's stilts back and saves the day.

Dawn | 3 comments The King's Stilts be it, although I don't recall all the stuff about the cat army, the nizzard birds, the king and his stilts . . . I have ordered a copy of the book so I'm sure it will bring everything back when I read it and see the pictures. I can't wait for the flood of memories!

Thank you so much Tab, MJ and Browly! You guys have really made me happy!
