That is my MAIN issue too. They go over it never. I get that one guy trained her or whatever, but really, they could have did flashback, or a chapter between the queen taking over and present day!

1/4: (view spoiler)[The prologue held no appeal for me. It was a classic case of telling not showing and I worried for my enjoyment during the rest of the book if this unemotional start was anything to judge this by.

Thankfully this did pick up but I am still not fully invested. I found the dialogue very contrived and seemed to be largely created to fill the reader in on facts, rather than feel like authentic discussions that were occurring between the characters.

I am finding the plot very interesting and am appreciating the subtle links to Snow White but the writing style is not really for me, so far.

Also there seems to be some inconsistencies. The prologue states that Irina is Lorelai's step-mother but Irina keeps terming Lorelai her sister. Also how they came to be possessed by magic has yet to be explained. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 1-10 (view spoiler)[ I agree that the beginning wasn't great and didn't engage me. I like the Draconi as a race and am looking forward to seeing Kol in his dragon form interacting with Lorelai. I think Leo is funny and he gives some humor to the story. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 21-30 (view spoiler)[ I find myself skipping over some paragraphs that I feel are unnecessary to the story and slow it down. Extra descriptions or inner dialogue. There's a lot of 'I miss my family, I should've done more. No, wait, this is actually Irina's fault.' Over and over. It's a little tedious. I'm glad I'm on the last leg and can see how it ends. Also, I think Irina's mirror tricked Kol and the ogres may be aren't doing as much damage as he thinks. (hide spoiler)]

I am 133 pages into this book and I love it even with the (view spoiler)[Leo's death which was heartbreaking (hide spoiler)] I really like the characters and the story it really is amazing I am really enjoying it so far.

I am 223 pages into this book and it just keeps getting better and better I love the story and the characters they are just written so well. The story is flowing at a steady pace with Lorelai trying to defeat the evil queen to take back her kingdom and with Kol who has the huntsman role trying to save his kingdom from other things. I just love this book so very much my favorite Snow White retelling.

I am 307 pages into this book it is so very good (view spoiler)[ I really like the gradual development of Lorelai and Kol's relationship I like that it was not instant love I really like the slow pace but by this point, they really do like each other but there are more important things like saving his kingdom and hers as well (hide spoiler)] I love the pace of the story it is really action packed at this point I love it so much.

I feel like there's a lot of unanswered questions still. Like more about magic and magic users. And the ogre problem was just suddenly fixed by Irina's blood oath I guess? What about the lady that released them in the first place? Overall, the plot was good, the writing was okay. I might read the sequel. (hide spoiler)]

Leo's death was unprecedented and I appreciated this ballsy move so early on in the story. I am glad I have continued with this. I can see someting brewing but for now the action remains at the foreground. Lorelai is growing in strength and I am enjoying seeing her character progress in her own right. (hide spoiler)]

4/4: (view spoiler)[The death and destruction in this novel really touched a nerve with me. As the novel progressed the action was heightened and I was entirely glued to the last half of this book. And I loved how Lorelai was able to defeat Irina by basically using her magic against her. I wish we could have know more about Irina, just a little more glimpse into her. But she really had no heart, esp when she killed her lover. I will definitely be continuing this series.
