Sorry I haven't been around much the last week or so, we've been traveling A LOT. Now we are back in Hawaii though and settling back into our usual routine :)

Some news! I will soon be announcing the release of my newest book, Fatemarked! And I have a cover! Fatemarked (The Fatemarked Epic, #1) by David Estes It should be available for preorder on Amazon soon :)

As part of the release festivities, I will be giving away a REAL medieval sword and scabbard! However, to enter the giveaway you'll need to be a subscriber to my newsletter, so if you're interested, subscribe here: http://s.privy.com/8hg9k5g

That's it for now! I'm currently reading Gemina (The Illuminae Files, #2) by Amie Kaufman and enjoying it, though not as much as the first book.

I finished Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel and I really liked it. A very fresh PA story. Loved how all these people's lives intertwined together.

Thanks you. I do still read but I have been spending time with family all day, which is very healing, telling stories about our Joseph. Then I was gone for ten days so reading will become normal again.

Thanks very much Jenny and Victoria!

Fatemarked is now available for preorder here: http://amzn.to/2kkKdhm

Donna, I still feel brokenhearted by your story, but I am glad you are spending time with your family. As you said, normalcy and reading will come when it's ready.

I finished Gemina (The Illuminae Files, #2) by Amie Kaufman and enjoyed it up until the last 15% where I was very disappointed in the direction the book went. Overall, a good read however, but the Kindle version left my eyes straining quite a lot. I recommend investing in the hardback or paperback!

DNF'd A Mortal Song by Megan Crewe . Not for me.

Now reading Wizard's First Rule (Sword of Truth, #1) by Terry Goodkind

Jenny wrote: "I actually liked Gemina better, but it took a bit to get going to where I did."

That's good! It's rare I enjoy the sequel more than the first book :) What aspect did you like better? For me I wasn't a fan of the characters in Gemina as much as the characters in Illuminae. Still, I was really enjoying the read until the whole (view spoiler) Did you read on Kindle or hard copy? That was another annoying thing: the Kindle version had all kinds of issues. The chats with Ella were all messed up and I couldn't read anything Ella said after the first page. And toward the ending where all of AIDAN's conversations with Nik and Hanna were side by side...they were so small and faint I had to strain my eyes to read them...gave me a headache. Adele was like "You're seriously reading that?" as I pressed the screen up to my face. LOL I said, "I have to know what happens!" LOL

message 2171: by Elora (new)

Elora Mitchell | 449 comments I think the series of Illuminae in and of itself is groundbreaking. The format was gutsy, but it paid off in a huge way.
As much as I liked the story and characters, I can't get over the fact that Gemina was basically a retelling of Illuminae. With all the time and effort that went into the books, I guess I was expecting a little more than that. But I'm definitely in the minority. :)
David, I can't even imagine what reading it on the kindle was like...

Elora, I agree with you in a way...it did seem like they stuck with a very similar storyline using the same formula as the first book. I think they might've felt restricted by the format they'd pigeon-holed themselves into with the first book. Still, like you said, I applaud them for the creativity of format, I love that sort of thing!

I read it in hard copy--actually I read an ARC Jen sent me, so a lot of the graphics and art work weren't final yet. I want to reread it now that I have the finished copy and can see all of Hannah's art. That really sucks with the Kindle version David--Ella was my favorite character!

For what you said David, that part blew my mind actually and I liked it, although it was a bit hard to believe. But I love (view spoiler)

The part I really liked was the VERY END with the (view spoiler)

Oh I guessed I missed your first question! What did I like better....hmmm. I think it was just that the danger felt like it had been upped even more from the first one. I LOVED Ella and Nick's relationship, and Ella herself--really awesome addition IMO. The killer worm things freaked the heck out of me, but were fun in a very freaky way. And the wormhole thing, and then I just loved Hanna. I liked her even more than Kady actually, so maybe that was the big reason? And then the setting, with the space station on the malfunctioning wormhole with the virus and the pop song playing all the time...I just thought the whole thing together worked very well. I've heard the audio is even more amazing, and they actually do play that song throughout the story! And I think the biggest thing--it built even more on the world. I always love that, when the story gets bigger and bigger. Anyways, I still LOVE Illuminae, I just loved Gemina a teensy bit more :)

I'm going to jump in on the Gemina discussion. (view spoiler)

I'm also a big fan of the unique format. I have Illuminae in HB and also as an ecopy but not Gemina. My Illuminae copy looked the same as the HB from what I could tell. Sorry you couldn't get the full experience from your copy, David.

I'm almost done with NOS4A2 by Joe Hill and will try to finish it tonight. I'm half done with a beta read (EPIC read!).

Still listening to Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell .

I haven't had much reading time this week. Dang work is kicking my hiney these past few weeks. But then again, I am reading two books that are between 600 and 700 pages. Maybe that's why it feels like I'm reading at a snail's pace lately. BIG books.

I've not had much reading time this week either. Actually, most of January I read less than is normal for me... Just so much going on that I'm only managing to snatch a little reading time each day before bed, and then I'm mostly too tired to read for long.

Started a reread of Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell , loving it!

I haven't had as much reading time this week either--work and Tessa's had a lot going on this week (which means I do--running her around and everything!)

Last night between her stuff and me going to see Rogue One (which I really liked) I didn't have any reading time! Tonight Darryl and I are going to my annual work party, so I doubt I'll be reading tonight either! And the rest of my weekend is packed!

Jenny- thanks for explaining, that makes sense! Characters are CRUCIAL. I didn't particularly like Hanna, so that's probably a large part of why I enjoyed Illuminae more (I love Kady :) Plus from the beginning it was so obvious she would (view spoiler)

Karen- I read Illuminae on Kindle and it worked ok and I feel like I mostly got the full experience intended by the author. But yeah, it sucked when I couldn't read most of Ella's lines throughout the story, and when I had to strain my eyes to read the bits toward the end where Nik and Hanna's story was unfolding side by side. With the third book, I should probably just go for the hardcopy :) Lesson learned!
