Danielle Book Boss (daniellebookboss) | 1009 comments I think I'm going to change my book to Three Days to Dead (Dreg City, #1) by Kelly Meding

Danielle Book Boss (daniellebookboss) | 1009 comments Shelf: Sci fi Romance
Book: Mercenary Instinct
Rating: 3 stars
Date Finished: 5/2
Review:

When this book started out I was very intrigued. I love that the heroine was self-made gal trying to make it in the world after coming from humble beginnings. And she had a spaceship with flower print paint. How dorky and adorable is that??!! And then we meet our hero - the broody type who doesn't smile much and a nice little change from the young hero - he was about 40 with a little salt and pepper action starting to happen. I appreciate diversity in my characters. Age, race, income, whatever.

The problem I had was right around the 40% the book got super boring. The pacing was not well done at this point, and I chugged through to the end. There was time spent on certain scenes that before I turned the page I was wishing like please please book gods let me be taken to another story point but alas I had to read through 10 pages of a botched mission. Meh.

The characters definitely had chemistry and I appreciated that the heroine didn't fall head over heels, instalove but when it did happen it was instalust and it didn't make a lot of sense that first typical scene in a romance where they try to do the horizontal mambo but get interrupted.

Anyways, it was interesting. Not enough for me to purchase more books in the series but nice to get into a freebie. Damn that one-click addiction!

Final Thoughts:
For a freebie this wasn't bad. I just didn't mesh with the humor. Normally I love a funny book. But I barely even cracked a smile no matter how hard the book tried. I was over the whole Prada obsession pretty quickly. My favorite character was definitely The Kev.

Review:

This was my least favorite in the series thus far. It seemed like a lot of build up for about 50 pages of action. Though when the action started, it was crazy nuts. I hate the King and I cannot wait to see Aelin kick his evil butt. I hope that she continues to progress towards being more adultlike and stop the pity party like she seems to have. I am sad that I'm on the last book but I really hope that Maas makes it as awesome as the first two.

As Lie the Dead (Dreg City, #2) by Kelly Meding
finished 5/9/16
3 stars
review: Evy seems to spend as much time as Harry Dresden getting beat up. This time around she is guilted into protecting a pregnant owlkin while at the same time investigating who gave the order that wiped out most of the owlkin to save Rufus. I really like Evy and Wyatt - they are good together. Phin was a great addition this time around and the investigation was interesting with lots of twists and turns.

Review:

I found this book really interesting. I enjoyed the world that Kelly Meding introduced in this book and I really liked the heroine Evie. The book's pacing went well at first and the reason why it's not a 3.5 or 4 star book is because it got really boring/story filler around the 65-70% mark. Mind you this book lasts over the course of three days and A LOT happens in that time span but that third quarter left something to be desired.

I liked the various characters - one of my favorite aspects of PNR are a variety of supernaturals. This one had vampires, fae, shifters, etc. Evie was a great heroine. She was strong, resilient, smart, all those great things. The romance - this is a shocker that I'm saying this because I have NEVER said this before - I could have done without. It would have been nice to hint at it for later books but it was full on in this book. It was also really random. Because at one point Evie was like "Hey dude let's bone and have fun and do it once because I'm really upset and need a distraction" and then all of a sudden she was head over heels, I'll die for you in love. I was kept trying to think as the story progressed when that transition happened. IDK even after finishing the book.

I'm continuing the series. I'd like to see where this series/world goes.

review: This is probably how more series should end - with you wanting more of the characters but wrapping up the story line and even better, giving a great epilogue. I absolutely love Cady and Lon together, and Lon's son Jupe is an adorable, geeky handful.

Review: I read mixed reviews on this one that kept me from reading it sooner. I'm glad it came up this week for the favorite series shelf as I really enjoyed it. I figured out the twist but was still shocked to actually read it. The romance angle seemed a little forced but I'm really interested to see how the story progresses.

Review:

I like this series. Is it my favorite or do I feel the need to gush about it quite yet? No, not really. But that's okay because I think this series: the dystopian world built, the characters, even the different dialect they are speaking, it's all really cool and interesting and I think will make for an epic series. I also like the way Chess and Terrible's relationship is progressing/not progressing (in the sense that he's REALLY angry with her right now but that she finally understands what her feelings are for him).

The only issue I had with this book was the plotting. I hate coincidence. Coincidence that makes no sense that is. And the major plot point in this book connected with a secondary but important plot point too well. To coincidentally. Like the odds would be astronomical which I know this is dystopian but I still need some level of reality to my reads. I need a reality that makes sense to the particular world and I think the bad guys in two separate plots that are unrelated being best friends is pretty coincidental and unrealistic and a tad lazy. I could see if one plot fed the other but literally neither had anything to do with the other and either one would have been strong by themselves. I would prefer one plot point per book unless they help one another along. I ranted for a second there but I think people who read the book will understand what I'm saying.

I'll definitely be continuing the series.

Diane ~Firefly~ | 913 comments So I was looking at the Bingo spreadsheet and if 5 stars is called next week, we are the only team with a possible win. However if Dragons is called next week, we'll be in rush as team 4 and 15 can also win with it.

Both of these possible wins require we get the Free Space stamp and the Dragon win requires we complete this week's stamp.

FYI - Danielle, did you request our Favorite Series stamp? I thought we had all completed that.

That's how you write a sequel. It was full of angst and humor and love and drama and I laughed and I cried and I yelled and I need the next book now. Feyre was much less annoying in this book (once she got herself together) and how can you argue with more Rhysand? I hope that Maas continues this excellence with the next book as this one was a million times better than the first one.

review: the world is very interesting, especially with all the politics between all the underworld gods and their followers. However, I just never cared that much about the main characters in this story, but many of the secondary ones were more intriguing. The main plot line left on a bit of a cliff hanger, so I will need to read the next one eventually.

Review:

I enjoyed this book. I think what has made me continue this series is more so the world that is built rather than the story plots. The plots seems pretty simple, kind of run-of-the-mill but the world in this series is really impressive. I wish I could be more impressed with the books' story lines more.

Chess, I get that you are a drug addict. What I don't need, three books in, is a constant running commentary every time you get high. I loved the interaction between she and Terrible and was said the end of the last book so I'm happy again to see that their story is resolved for now. Overall I'd say this was a 3.5 but I round up to 4 because the world is just so wonderfully done. I wish the stories would meet that expectation as well.
