Samantha Morrison | 5 comments So glad I found this group and hoping for help.

I used to own this book before it was lost, and read it many times, but it was a few years ago. That's why it's so frustrating that I can't remember the name or author, or as much about the plot as I like. But I loved it.

Regency novel. Written sometime between the 90s to 2000s. I THINK the author's name was 2 initials followed by last name, not sure. The story begins with our male protaganist in prison, in Spain I believe. He's imprisoned with an old man. His friend comes to get him out - maybe he was there from gambling debts? - and he gets the old man released too. Come to find out this straggly looking man is rather rich and well-to-do. They go to his estate and...hang out, lol.

Can't recall what happens after that or how exactly he meets the female lead. I wish I remembered more about her and the whole plot. The main scene I remember is somewhere in the middle of the book, they go ice-skating and it's all very romantic - descriptions like how she looks like a snow fairy...I think they walk over a bridge...

In another scene they sit together in a library and read. They both love poetry I think, pretty sure he keeps quoting mysterious poetry lines at her throughout...

The plot gets extremely complicated and mad-cap. Near the end, I *think* everyone believes he dies (or was it her brother?) no I think it was him. Then surprise, he didn't, and while he was at it he fixed some terrible problem of hers and she's all shocked that he's alive annnd....then they get married or something haha.

I loved it because it reminded me very much of a Georgette Heyer novel. No smut, a gentle and sweet romance.

The other thing I clearly remember is the cover, however books often have several different covers. The one I had anyway was an illustration of a Regency scene - the background was a deep green and the main character was standing while the girl was sitting somewhere. OH I just remembered! He had a scar across his face which was on this particular cover too! I also think he was an Earl or Viscount. That's all I can recall. Please help!! Even if you aren't sure, any suggestions would be great.

Jim | 5 comments First thing that comes to mind is that it's an adaptation of "The Count of Monte Cristo".

This discussion points out a few books that could be the one you're looking for:

1) A Prisoner of Birthby Jeffrey Archer
2) Revenge: A Novel by Stephen Fry
3) Exact Revenge by Tim Green

Samantha Morrison | 5 comments Darn, well I can see how it might seem similar but it would say it's less heavy than that, and not quite as complicated. More based on a simple romance.

I should have mentioned it was a female author, as well.

Lady Emma's Campaign by Jennifer Moore?

One GR reviewer says, "Lady Emma fell in love with Sidney Fletcher during her teen years, but her older brother’s best friend barely noticed her. Of course, he’s busy being a British naval captain and has resigned himself to remaining a lifelong bachelor at sea. Emma’s heart breaks when she learns that Sidney has been killed in the Napoleonic Wars, but her brother, William soon learns that Sidney is NOT dead, but is secretly being held prisoner in a French fort in Spain. Emma stows away on William’s ship, determined to rescue Sidney, after which, he’ll be so grateful, he’ll propose, right?"

Samantha Morrison | 5 comments Not that one either unfortunately. The heroine and hero don't meet till later, not knowing each other previously.

I thought it had gamester in the title but I tried googling that and no results came up that matched

Samantha Morrison | 5 comments No... :( I think the hard thing too is its not terribly well-known and, as far as I know, the author had no other novels I could find, or very few and no other Regency

Samantha Morrison | 5 comments I found it!!!! I KNEW it was called The Gamester but other more common books with the same name kept coming up instead. It's by G.K. Collier. I am so happy.
