SOLVED. Fantasy series where humans are bonded to animals/wolves [s]

This was a very involved series that followed generations in a kingdom where people (mostly men I think) bonded to animals (or possibly just wolves). The biggest detail I remember is that in the event of one of their deaths the other half of the bonded pair is so despondent that they eventually waste away or kill themselves. There's something about all the generations leading to this perfect being who will unite all the kingdoms so there's a lot of arranged marriage and people going against it. There's also like the "royal" cast of characters and a sort of tribe of other people who are sort of a cross between Iron Age Scott's and Native Americans? I want to say there are four books in the series but I remember I had like special addition copies of the books that might have been one or more novels combined in a single volume.

If this is a recent series, it could be Spirit Animals. The books are done by different authors, but I'm pretty sure the first one is by Brandon Mull.
