Joanne | 93 comments Hello All,

I have not heard any other suggestions for the illustrated book. I have chosen A Bride's Story, Vol. 1 and A Bride's Story, Vol. 2 for the April and May choice. I've ordered Vol. 1 from my library. It seems to be a popular series so hopefully, you can get it from the library if you don't want to buy it.

I looked for a long time for this choice. I chose it because of the classical illustrations, good stories and excellent reviews in Amazon.com. I hope some of you will join me.

Joanne

Dioni | 157 comments Looks great. Too bad my library doesn't have it, so I can't join. (Buying the series would be too much as I usually only spend about 20 minutes per manga volume ;)

I know the author's other series Emma, Vol. 01 is pretty popular.

Try interlibrary loan! Most libraries provide this service for free. That way, they can find you a book from another library and get it for you. I know about this because I used to be a Librarian.

Lets keep Emma in mind for the future then!

Joanne | 93 comments I have started Bride's Story volume 1 and I am absolutely loving it! The illustrations alone are fabulous. Unlike other mangas, I find that I am reading this book slowly just to pause and look at the pictures in all their beautiful detail.

The story is also great as well!

My online library search covers about a dozen libraries in London, but they don't have this series. In the UK there's a small fee to reserve a book and get it delivered to your preferred branch, but in any way I can't do that because they don't have it. Too bad as A Bride's Story definitely looks like a series that I would love!

Sorry Dioni! I hope we can find one you can read next time!

Bill | 1252 comments I'd just like to say to those who really enjoyed the first two volumes that the focus moves away from Amir and Karluk from volume 3, and onto the British "Great Game" agent Smith.

I greatly enjoyed the first two volumes, with their engaging characters and intricate cultural detail. But I won't be continuing to volume 4.

Joanne | 93 comments Hmmm....I wonder if I'll like the series after volume 2 if we don't see Amir and Karluk. I find it kind of weird that agent Smith is there at all. He seems out of place in the timeline of history. I may be wrong.

Bill | 1252 comments I don't have the book, so it's hard to recall exactly, but I remember looking it up and finding it's set in what today is Kazakhstan. It's before Russia took over the area, and Central Asia was loosely scattered with agents of "The Great Game", a contest between England and Russia for influence in the region. Smith seems to me to be an academic gathering information and contacts in the service of the British Foreign Office.

One of these days I'm going to get around to reading Hopkirk's enormous book on the subject: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

Joanne | 93 comments I went ahead and read volumes 3 and 4 and enjoyed them both. Volume 4 is especially entertaining. The part about the twins looking for husbands is really funny!

Christian (comeauch) | 230 comments FInally got around reading them!
I loved the drawings and the idea about a story set in that place & time, but too many little things broke the magic for me. Then again, I've never been a big fan of anime and manga so I'm not too disappointed.

That's good to know, about Mr. Smith taking a more important role! I certainly won't continue then lol, I thought he was completely out of place :P

Just so you know, later on, he goes out of the spotlight. In volume 4 and 5, Mr. Smith arrives at a fishing village. When he is there, he meets twin girls. Those next to volumes are about those twin girls and their antics. I found them quite funny.

Bill | 1252 comments I friend has Bride's Story through volume 6, so I borrowed them. It's much as Christian says.

In volume 4, Smith meets twin girls, and the story quickly turns to focus on them, mostly ignoring Smith. The twins' story lasts through much of volume 5, including a detailed description of their wedding to two brothers. Then it's back to Amir & Karluk for the rest of volume 5 and all of volume 6.

Apparently the series is up to volume 8 now.
