Leprechaun Event RaT: Read-a-Thon Daily Questions: Day 8

newest »

1: What Genres do you read most?
I read quite a variety now, way more than I used to. Years ago, especially a time when I was using the library a lot, I was mainly reading mystery / suspense and not branching out any into much else. Now, I read just about it all. I'd say most would be Mystery/Suspense/Thriller, YA, Erotica and Sci-Fi (with a focus on time travel or virtual reality).
2: What Genres do you read least, or not at all?
Not many! If it sounds good to me, then I'll likely try it no matter what the genre. Genres I don't read are ~ Chick-lit, any kind of Religion, and most New Adult.
3: Are you a reader that reads just about everything, or a select few genres?
Now I read just about everything. What sounds good to me varies and I prefer to have an action filled plot, but I rarely pay attention to genres anymore and just read what sounds good to me.
4: Has your reading evolved in recent years, or at all?
Yes, a ton. As I mentioned, I used to pretty much stick with mystery/suspense, but now I'll read almost anything. Reading The Shadow of the Wind a few years ago really helped me branch out, as I never thought I'd like any kind of historical fiction and it became one of my all time favorites. Now I don't judge by genre. :)
5: How do challenges or read-a-thons affect your reading?
I always amp up my reading for both, usually. With read-a-thons, I really do prefer the interactions the most, so I don't mind if I read less than I want if I'm getting good interactions out of it. With challenges, I tend to go a bit nuts, especially when I'm on a good team. I read like crazy then I get burnt out for a month or two. :) I preferred how I did it for the last Tower Teams though, rather than doing all my reading at the start and getting burnt out before it was over, I read only moderately at the start and then as it was coming into the last stretch (the last 24 days), I read more in those days than I ever have in a month before. I still did get burnt out, but that was ok, took Feb easy so I was ready to go for this event! :D

1: What Genres do you read most?
Urban Fantasy, all things romance even if I had a preference for MM and Romantic Suspense, YA, Mystery & Thriller.
2: What Genres do you read least, or not at all?
I don't usually read much non-fiction, not because I don't like, but because fiction is always the winner. Historical Fiction has to be really good for me to enjoy. Can't read Poetry. I don't like horror or anything Stephen King. And zombies, zombies are a no no.
3: Are you a reader that reads just about everything, or a select few genres?
I prefer my usual genres, but I read about everything except all said on 2 after the "Can't".
4: Has your reading evolved in recent years, or at all?
Yes. I used to be a M&T reader. Then Harry Potter appeared and my life was never the same. Also traded high fantasy for the paranormal version a few years ago, and now I tend to prefer MM versions of it.
5: How do challenges or read-a-thons affect your reading?
It makes me change from 6-8 books a month to 3-4 books a week. Unless I'm burned out. Then it doesn't affect me because I just can't read.

Horror is my absolute favorite genre so I read a lot of that. I'd say my top 5: Horror, Young Adult, Mystery/Thriller, Contemporary, Fantasy.
2: What Genres do you read least, or not at all?
I really dislike Historical Fiction and most non-fiction. If I have to read non-fic it has to be about some huge disaster or terrible disease or something really, really messed up. Otherwise I'm bored out of my mind. I also, don't throw rocks at me, really hate romance.
3: Are you a reader that reads just about everything, or a select few genres?
Other than the above three genres, I'll read anything!
4: Has your reading evolved in recent years, or at all?
I didn't used to be much of a Horror reader until I discovered King, Hill, and Koontz. Now I devour it. I used to be almost a strictly YA reader as well but I've moved to reading equal amounts of YA and Adult now.
5: How do challenges or read-a-thons affect your reading?
Oh gosh. I used to read 30 books a year, max. Now I'm in the hundreds. Also I would have NO IDEA how to choose what to read next if I didn't need to read a book for a challenge. I get a lot of variety thanks to challenges.

It usually tends to be fantasy/sci-fi or historical fiction that I read the most. I blame my dad for introducing me to "The Hobbit" at a very young age and my mom watching Star Trek: Next Generation. :)
2: What Genres do you read least, or not at all?
Poetry. I am not really into it- except for William Blake, who I love. I also tend to read very few biographies/auto-biographies unless I feel they are historically relevant. Westerns are also very few and far between for me. Mostly because the only Western I have ever read, I remember being really offended by the way the Native Americans were portrayed.
3: Are you a reader that reads just about everything, or a select few genres?
I will read most genres except for the one above.
4: Has your reading evolved in recent years, or at all?
Yes, I would say it has evolved. I used to eschew anything that was remotely comic-book/graphic novel like. Now I find myself wishing I knew more about them so I could really start getting into them. My horizons have broadened immensely. Except, I still hate Dickens- forced to read "A Tale of Two Cities" and "Great Expectations" in school and it will be a cold day in hell when I ever pick up another one of his books. The one exception is "The Christmas Carol" for obvious reasons.
5: How do challenges or read-a-thons affect your reading?
They compel me to read more. I had felt for years that I wasn't reading as much as I wanted to, but I didn't quite know where to start with all of the new great books that had come out since I became a mom. The challenges really help me to prioritize books and then finish them.

Young Adult, Humor, Fantasy, Mystery
2: What Genres do you read least, or not at all?
Erotica
3: Are you a reader that reads just about everything, or a select few genres?
I'll pretty much read anything, but I sometimes find Nonfiction books boring. It depends on the subject.
4: Has your reading evolved in recent years, or at all?
Yes, definitely. I still find Ethan Frome absolutely horrible and some other classics "boring" but I do feel like I've branched out.
5: How do challenges or read-a-thons affect your reading?
I LOVE challenges! They encourage me to try to read all different genres! And my to-read list is so big that it helps me narrow down what to read next since I want to read so many books.

Fiction: YA, Mystery/Thriller, Contemporary, Fantasy, Historical Fiction
Non-fiction: Pop-science, Biography, History
2: What Genres do you read least, or not at all?
I read very little romance or horror, and I don't read any poetry or westerns.
3: Are you a reader that reads just about everything, or a select few genres?
I am really evenly spread across all my "likes". The only genre I don't avoid but don't seek out is Sci-Fi.
4: Has your reading evolved in recent years, or at all?
When I was still in school, I read very little non-fiction. But I've found that since I no longer undergo a formal education, I have a much stronger need/desire to self-educate through non-fiction reading. I now read about a 50/50 split.
5: How do challenges or read-a-thons affect your reading?
During a 24 hour read-a-thon, I will read more than I normally do. But with a multi-day one such as this I find that I really just enjoy the companionship, but have to get on with my daily life and so my reading rate doesn't change much. The challenges, however, make me pick up books that have been sitting unread on my shelves forever. They are great!

During the Read-a-Thon Progress Report, one thing was clear ~
There's not enough READING going on for the READ-A-THON!!

Sci-Fi, specifically dystopian, apocolyptic, and paranormal stuff. I'm also an urban fantasy fan.
2: What Genres do you read least, or not at all?
I stay far away from romance. I tend to dapple in a lot of other categories, but just can't do romance.
3: Are you a reader that reads just about everything, or a select few genres?
Since I'm not the quickest reader I tend to stick to a few main genres, but I do dabble in other genres from time to time. If I read more speedily I think think that I'd be more all over the place.
4: Has your reading evolved in recent years, or at all?
Not really. I've probably narrowed down the genres I like a bit more. I think I've also started staying away from the High fantasy a bit more than I used to, but I still like it once in awhile.
5: How do challenges or read-a-thons affect your reading?
Sometimes they give me the push I need to actually read a bit more. Other than that they are mostly just a way to turn reading into a social game. Challenges also help me narrow down what I'm going to read next because of the challenge parameters.

Fantasy, Scifi, Romance and Mystery
2: What Genres do you read least, or not at all?
Least-Horror
3: Are you a reader that reads just about everything, or a select few genres?
I will read just about anything that interests me
4: Has your reading evolved in recent years, or at all?
Not really I've always read whatever interested me.
5: How do challenges or read-a-thons affect your reading?
Challenges/readathons push me to read books I already own, that are on my TBR, or that will help me finish series. Challenges are good for variety reading and finding recommendations from seeing what others are reading for the some categories.

Oh man lots. I like horror, thrillers, mystery, historical fiction, YA, science fiction (particularly dysoptia or post-apocalyptic), sometimes non-fiction if it's not too dry.
2: What Genres do you read least, or not at all?
Romance
3: Are you a reader that reads just about everything, or a select few genres?
There's a lot that I enjoy, and even if it's not a genre I typically read, if it gets good reviews, I might give it a shot anyway.
4: Has your reading evolved in recent years, or at all?
I used to read exclusively non-fiction.
5: How do challenges or read-a-thons affect your reading?
It depends. I have a lot of books on my TBR list, so I may try to pick books based on challenges, but I don't read books that I wouldn't normally just to fit a challenge.

I find myself reading a lot of YA. Not sure why, the summaries just draw me in the most. I do also really enjoy historical fiction, romance (PNR, historical, and timetravel, mostly,) dystopian, some high fantasy and urban fantasy, and soft scifi.
2: What Genres do you read least, or not at all?
I don’t read a lot of nonfiction. I’m trying to find some nonfiction that reads like a story because I feel like you can learn a ton from books; I just don’t want to read something dry and with low entertainment.
3: Are you a reader that reads just about everything, or a select few genres?
I read just about everything. If someone recommends something to me, and they tell me why it’s good, I’ll most likely give it a chance. That’s how I’ve expanded my genres that I do read.
4: Has your reading evolved in recent years, or at all?
It’s definitely evolved over the past few years. I’ve been getting in to more action and adventure, crime, mystery, and classics. These were genres I never really explored before. I’ve also been searching for interesting nonfiction.
5: How do challenges or read-a-thons affect your reading?
They get me out of my comfort zone. I still sort of want to stick to the genres I enjoy, but if there’s a book that will fit, and it seems interesting to me, even if it’s in a less explored genre, I’ll most likely read it. I’ve also been getting to know a lot more book lovers, now that I’m involved in challenges.

mystery, fiction, cookbooks
2: What Genres do you read least, or not at all?
fantasy, erotica
3: Are you a reader that reads just about everything, or a select few genres?
I like to read a variety of things
4: Has your reading evolved in recent years, or at all?
I would say it has evolved somewhat. I think the combination of being an English major and reading challenges helped me pick up books I might not have read otherwise
5: How do challenges or read-a-thons affect your reading?
Challenges help me read a wider variety of books than I would otherwise. RaTs push me to get a little more reading done in a shorter period of time, but I won't let it push me to the point where I stop enjoying the reading.

sci-fi and fantasy, historical fiction, classics, mystery
2: What Genres do you read least, or not at all?
non-fiction though I'm trying to overcome my dislike
3: Are you a reader that reads just about everything, or a select few genres?
just about everything
4: Has your reading evolved in recent years, or at all?
reading challenges made me read lots of newer books and lighter genres than I used to
5: How do challenges or read-a-thons affect your reading?
I read much more since I joined GR and tried reading challenges

Historical Fiction, mystery, thriller, light fantasy, contemporary -- I like the mixtures even more -- historical fantasy, historical mystery
2: What Genres do you read least, or not at all?
I don't like straight up romance, but I like a bit of romance in other genres. I almost never read horror or erotica.
3: Are you a reader that reads just about everything, or a select few genres?
I definitely read a mix --- I definitely do not read a series or an author works straight through.
4: Has your reading evolved in recent years, or at all?
I've always read a mix. Also, I found that I only like certain types of books on audio. I used to think that I didn't like westerns, but the last 3 that I read, I really enjoyed so now I try not to judge by genre ;-).
5: How do challenges or read-a-thons affect your reading? Read-a-thons not so much because I do spend my free time reading. Challenges definitely -- I've read some things that were great and some things that were awful just for a challenge.

I love historical fiction & mysteries most of all.
2: What Genres do you read least, or not at all?
I will read anything. I give a new book 100 pages. If I'm just not feeling it, I'll stop.
3: Are you a reader that reads just about everything, or a select few genres? See #2. :)
4: Has your reading evolved in recent years, or at all?
Most definitely. GoodReads has challenged me to read things I probably never would've picked up before.
5: How do challenges or read-a-thons affect your reading?
I jump around a lot. Even more than usual -- which is saying a lot!

Fantasy, historical mysteries, urban-fantasy, historical romance and non-fiction history books.
2: What Genres do you read least, or not at all?
Young-adult, New adult and Horror
3: Are you a reader that reads just about everything, or a select few genres?
I've already tried a little bit of everything and quickly identified my favourite genres and choose to remain with my favourite genres. I may pick up a book again from one of my least favourite genres if the synopsis sounds promising or when I'm in the mood for it. But I'm more reluctant today to read a book I'm not especially excited for than I was before.
4: Has your reading evolved in recent years, or at all?
Not really except for the language in which I'm reading and my favourite genres has been broadening. I only read urban-fantasies and historical fiction before, I'm glad I've discovered GR and purchased an e-reader to be able to try other genres.
5: How do challenges or read-a-thons affect your reading? I agree with most what has been said in the other posts above. But read-a-thons don't affect my reading that much, I will try to read more but if real life gets in the way or if I'm too tired then so be it. I prefer individual challenges or team challenges also for the social aspect and it makes the challenge and reading more excited. I don't necessarily like specific tasks, I prefer to read what I'm in the mood for at that moment.

My absolute most favorite genres are Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance. :-)
2: What Genres do you read least, or not at all?
I am not a fan of Westerns. I don't think I've ever read one, but seeing Western movies makes me think I would not enjoy Western books, so I don't really ever want to read one. I also tend to stay away from Chick Lit and Literary Fiction. And nonfiction is really not my thing, either.
3: Are you a reader that reads just about everything, or a select few genres?
I'm willing to give almost any genre a try, and have. I participated in the Book Riot Read Harder Challenge for 2015, and am again doing the 2016 one, and I find that this Challenge really stretches me as a reader. And to my happy surprise, I've enjoyed most of what I've read outside of my comfort zones.
4: Has your reading evolved in recent years, or at all?
I'm not sure what you mean by evolved? If you mean, have I stretched my reading horizons, then yes. I've read many more Historical Fiction, nonfiction, and "other" books outside of my go-to genres in recent years (most thanks to the Book Riot Read Harder Challenges, as mentioned in my last answer).
5: How do challenges or read-a-thons affect your reading?
The don't often change what I read, though sometimes I'll add in a book that I might otherwise not have read (or that I might otherwise have not read yet). Book Riot's Read Harder Challenge, as mentioned above, has opened me up to reading books outside of my comfort genres. But I mostly read what I want and if "what I want" happens to fit a challenge task, that's great! lol ;-)
As for Read-a-Thons, I haven't participated in many (I think this is my third). I've participated in the last two Dewey 24-Hour Read-a-Thons, and those are fabulous as I read as much as I can in those 24 hours, and avoid - or try to avoid - all other distractions. :-)
This Rainbow Read-a-Thon has, unfortunately, had a negative impact on my reading. I'm not able to do nearly as much as I had hoped due to all of the socializing. And the socializing is great fun, but I'd rather be reading. ;-)

I read so many different genres. The past year or so my main ones have been fantasy for fiction and science and history for nonfiction.
2: What Genres do you read least, or not at all?
Romance and erotica for sure!
3: Are you a reader that reads just about everything, or a select few genres?
I read about anything that isn't pure romance/erotica. I love challenges because they make me search out new books and authors I never would have found otherwise.
4: Has your reading evolved in recent years, or at all?
Absolutely. I used to just read nonfiction and classics for most of my life. It's only been in the last few years that I have picked up newer authors that weren't nonfiction and jumped in with both feet into fantasy and sci-fi.
5: How do challenges or read-a-thons affect your reading?
SO SO MUCH! They make me want to read so much more and explore so many different genres and authors. My world is larger and more colorful because of reading challengs. :)

Mystery/Suspense, Paranormal
2: What Genres do you read least, or not at all?
Romance, Non-Fiction
3: Are you a reader that reads just about everything, or a select few genres?
I used to read only a select few, but I started participating in the BOM to branch out into new genres!
4: Has your reading evolved in recent years, or at all?
Yes, I will read just about anything!
5: How do challenges or read-a-thons affect your reading? I just started them - ATW challenge is my first and this is my first RaT. I find myself looking first through my favorite genres for something that will fit the challenge, then in my TBR and finally just a random search! So, instead of reaching for my "normal" type, I am looking for anything that will fit.

You know, I wasn't really sure until I started doing a challenge where I keep track of all the books I'm reading by putting them in different genres, trying to reach 100 books. It seems like the books I read the most are romance and fantasy, which sound pretty accurate :)
2: What Genres do you read least, or not at all?
It's hard for me to read non-fiction books. I try and every once in a while I get through it, but it's hard. I like to read books that will transport me out of the current world and into a completely different one. There are times where true stories seem completely unreal and I find those are the easiest for me to read.
3: Are you a reader that reads just about everything, or a select few genres?
I'd say I lean more towards just a few genres than read everything, but I have been trying more books that I normally wouldn't try, so I'm getting there :)
4: Has your reading evolved in recent years, or at all?
I don't always read consistently - I go through bursts of reading and not reading, so it's hard to say. I think the types of books that interest me are still pretty much the same, but I am widening my horizons and trying out new authors instead of just the authors I know. Stephen King has been a long-time staple since high school.
5: How do challenges or read-a-thons affect your reading?
When I'm aiming to complete a challenge, I'll go through my TBR list or see what other people have read that might fit into the category I need. It helps me to find other books I wouldn't have found on my own.
