message 2: by Cait S (new)

Cait S | 2825 comments 1: How has the read-a-thon been going for you?
No complaints!

2: Are you enjoying the socializing or the reading more?
The socializing. I used to be a 5 book a week reader, and if that was still the case, I'd be all over the reading. But alas...

3: How many books have you started / completed?
I've completed 2 and finishing up my 3rd today.

4: Are you meeting your goals, or have you abandoned them?
My goal was only to read books that I enjoyed and not force myself to finish something I wasn't liking. So yes! Still meeting it!

5: Are you enjoying learning about others with the Daily Questions?
Yes! My friends list grows every day!

6: Are you enjoying the Daily Recommendations?
I haven't taken any of the recommendations because my to-read is TOO LONG as it is. But I'm enjoying digging through my books and finding things to rec to others.

7: Have you done any of the Daily Tasks?
Nope. I think I am too slow even for the slow speed ones ;)

8: What are your hopes for the 2nd week of the RaT?
My parents are getting here Saturday morning and will be here all week so at this point my hope is just to get some reading done at all haha

9: Would you like to see more read-a-thons like this in the future?
If others are enjoying it, sure. I'm up for participating in just about anything.

10: What, if anything, would make it better for you?
No ideas currently :)

message 3: by Karsyn (last edited Mar 17, 2016 07:04AM) (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Is it wrong if the creator answers the questions too? :)

1: How has the read-a-thon been going for you?
Good, good. About how I expected, a little better even. Been steady in the socializing, and I like that. :)

2: Are you enjoying the socializing or the reading more?
Socializing, I like getting to know others!

3: How many books have you started / completed?
I've completed 6 and have 2 others going, one of which I'll finish today.

4: Are you meeting your goals, or have you abandoned them?
My goals were only to finish what I started, so in one way I had a FAIL on that, because I started a book 2 days ago and finally gave it a DNF yesterday. It wasn't worth my time. :/ Other than that, I've been reading and socializing, just what I wanted to do! :)

5: Are you enjoying learning about others with the Daily Questions?
Yup!

6: Are you enjoying the Daily Recommendations?
Yup, though like Cait, I enjoy recommending more. I love to recommend books I love, but I do plan to look at a few recommendations I saw closer. :)

7: Have you done any of the Daily Tasks?
Nope, only because I don't get coins. I totally would have, if I was getting the coins. :) But, since I'm one of the ones giving them away, I've just been reading whatever strikes my fancy. :D

8: What are your hopes for the 2nd week of the RaT?
More reading, more socializing! :)

9: Would you like to see more read-a-thons like this in the future?
If people want them, I'm glad to host them.

10: What, if anything, would make it better for you?
Not much, though I wouldn't mind MORE participation. I don't mean those of you that have been joining in, y'all have been great!! I mean the others that come and look at the post (I SEE YOU LOOKING NOW) but aren't joining in. Why aren't you joining in?!? Come on in, we don't bite! :)
As an example ~ Day 6 Questions has 175 unique views, that mean 175 DIFFERENT people looked at that thread, but only 14 answered the questions.

message 4: by Stephanie (last edited Mar 18, 2016 09:58AM) (new)

Stephanie | 194 comments 1: How has the read-a-thon been going for you?

Pretty good. I haven't read as much as I wanted to (didn't think I would get to read 9 books in the space of two weeks without ignoring life), but it has been really fun to meet some of the other people who have been participating, so I count that as a win.

2: Are you enjoying the socializing or the reading more?

I would have tried to read regardless, so the socializing is more fun. :)

3: How many books have you started / completed?

I will probably finish my 4th today. I read The Neverending Story, A Room of One's Own, The Bell Jar and I am currently reading The Handmaid's Tale. If I don't finish "The Handmaid's Tale tonight, I think I might scream. I really want to know what happens and I am not even halfway into it. Holidays, house cleaning and child homework keep interfering. Oh well. It's really good anyway :)

4: Are you meeting your goals, or have you abandoned them?

I haven't abandoned them, but I have little hope of reading nine books. Still, if I can get away with anywhere near that number I will be happy.

5: Are you enjoying learning about others with the Daily Questions?

I actually love that bit. I think it is so interesting to see what other people have done, seen and gone through. Really cool.

6: Are you enjoying the Daily Recommendations?

Yes. I love to find out about new books! My to read list has grown by about 30 since we started this.

7: Have you done any of the Daily Tasks?

I don't even know what those are, actually. I will have to check it out in a minute. Sorry.

8: What are your hopes for the 2nd week of the RaT?

Blow through some more books, talk to some more people if I can...basically, have fun.

9: Would you like to see more read-a-thons like this in the future?

Yes!

10: What, if anything, would make it better for you?

I don't need the coin thing. I get that it is probably fun for a lot of people so I wouldn't expect them to go away, but I am already keeping track of so many book challenges, that the coins feel like too much. That said, it's really easy to ignore them.

message 5: by Jex (new)

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments 1: How has the read-a-thon been going for you?
Pretty good. I've been finishing up books I was stuck on for awhile which is nice.

2: Are you enjoying the socializing or the reading more?
Socializing. It's been interesting to learn stuff about everyone and make new friends.

3: How many books have you started / completed?
I finished up 3 that I started before the read-a-thon and started 2 more.

4: Are you meeting your goals, or have you abandoned them?
My goal was to read at least 50 pages a day but I've listening to a bunch of audiobook which I didn't account for....so yes? maybe?

5: Are you enjoying learning about others with the Daily Questions?
Definitely. They're fun to look through.

6: Are you enjoying the Daily Recommendations?
I haven't really been looking at them honestly. I have so many books on my list that running through recommendations would just add to :-P

7: Have you done any of the Daily Tasks?
I have not. I'm not participating in the coin collecting so haven't really been doing the tasks. I also read pretty slow so I'm just reading what I want.

8: What are your hopes for the 2nd week of the RaT?
To find something awesome to read. I've really been in a reading rut lately and can't seem to get into it much. I really want to break that.

9: Would you like to see more read-a-thons like this in the future?
Definitely.

10: What, if anything, would make it better for you?
Um.....not sure. I just woke up so thinking is hard right now :-P

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments 1: How has the read-a-thon been going for you?
Good -- I don't really do that much differently

2: Are you enjoying the socializing or the reading more?
I have been enjoying the socializing, but it is taking time away from reading.
3: How many books have you started / completed?
Finished 2, started 3
4: Are you meeting your goals, or have you abandoned them? Did not have any specific goals
5: Are you enjoying learning about others with the Daily Questions?
Yes
6: Are you enjoying the Daily Recommendations?
Yes
7: Have you done any of the Daily Tasks?
No, I'm trying to finish up a 3 month challenge so my reading was already re-selected
8: What are your hopes for the 2nd week of the RaT?
Nothing specific
9: Would you like to see more read-a-thons like this in the future?
I don't really change my behavior much, but have enjoyed the interaction
10: What, if anything, would make it better for you? Can't think of anything.

Jo-Jo | 686 comments 1: How has the read-a-thon been going for you?
okay, but haven't got as much reading done as I'd have liked.

2: Are you enjoying the socializing or the reading more?
Definitely the socializing. I love that I'm learning more about everyone here.

3: How many books have you started / completed?
I think I finished 3 and have started 1

4: Are you meeting your goals, or have you abandoned them?
my only goals were to have fun and do the best I can

5: Are you enjoying learning about others with the Daily Questions?
Yes, definitely my favorite part. I'm in so many other challenges that the extra challenges/reading portion of the read-a-thon and st. paddy day coins/challenges have been a little overwhelming--but I've still been trying.

6: Are you enjoying the Daily Recommendations?
Yes, I always like adding to my ever growing TBR list

7: Have you done any of the Daily Tasks?
Not for the read-a-thon, but have completed a couple for the road to st.patrick's day and the Leprechaun RPG

8: What are your hopes for the 2nd week of the RaT?
Just keep having fun with it.

9: Would you like to see more read-a-thons like this in the future?
Of course, though I would be just as happy to see a Daily Question/recommendation section where we can continue to get to know each other. Or maybe even make it just a Daily Question, as in ONE question, so that we learn little stuff about each other every day. Like, what's your favorite color? What's you favorite food? etc.
10: What, if anything, would make it better for you?
I'm enjoying myself immensely. I don't think anything could make it better that you could do on your end. I could be in a few less challenges that way I could enjoy more by being able to read specific books for these tasks.

message 8: by Corinne (new)

Corinne | 86 comments 1: How has the read-a-thon been going for you?
Pretty good! I like it.

2: Are you enjoying the socializing or the reading more?
Socializing! I'm getting new friends. (add me if you'd like!)

3: How many books have you started / completed?
I've read 4, finishing up my 5th today and will start my 6th.

4: Are you meeting your goals, or have you abandoned them?
I am meeting my goal! :)

5: Are you enjoying learning about others with the Daily Questions?
Yes! I love seeing where we all come from!

6: Are you enjoying the Daily Recommendations?
Yes, I have been lurking on them and will add books to my TBR list from them.

7: Have you done any of the Daily Tasks?
Honestly, no.

8: What are your hopes for the 2nd week of the RaT?
150 pages a day :)

9: Would you like to see more read-a-thons like this in the future?
Yes I like it a lot! I love the daily questions and recommendations. I think it would be cool if we were more "chatty" in this group - I know we're very focused on challenges, which is awesome, but the chat section of this group seems a bit deserted!

10: What, if anything, would make it better for you?
It's all great!

Good! Am very much enjoying everything!
2: Are you enjoying the socializing or the reading more?
Enjoying both - have done more socializing than I normally would
3: How many books have you started / completed?
Started 3 - Completed 2, so far
4: Are you meeting your goals, or have you abandoned them?My goals were just to have fun and enjoy the group, with some reading thrown in. So, yes!
5: Are you enjoying learning about others with the Daily Questions?
Very much!
6: Are you enjoying the Daily Recommendations?
Yes, my TBR list will be growing more.
7: Have you done any of the Daily Tasks?
A couple
8: What are your hopes for the 2nd week of the RaT?
Continue to have fun!
9: Would you like to see more read-a-thons like this in the future?
Absolutely!
10: What, if anything, would make it better for you?
Can't think of anything - it's been tons of fun!

message 10: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Thanks everyone who weighed in so far! :) Keep 'em coming!

I realized the Task section wouldn't do much, particularly with everything else going on. I should have just done without it, but wanted to give more options to get coins. When/if I host another read-a-thon, it'll either be without Task Recommendations, or during a time when there isn't another event going on.

@Joanne, unfortunately, I'm the wrong person to suggest ONE of something to. :D I realize today was a bit more, but I've tried to keep it at 5, or less. I'm very chatty, and like to learn lots about people. :D I'd be up for 10 questions a day, or more. I'm verbose and I know not everyone else is, otherwise Twitter wouldn't be so popular. I HATE it. Confining myself to a word count, nope can't do it! LOL! You could just choose one to answer each time. :)

@Corrine ~ yeah, there's not much in chat, but I think that we're pretty chatty within the challenges themselves (for the most part). I think chatter just tends to revolve around what's going on, rather than random stuffs. When we do the teams stuff, it's usually the teams themselves that are chatty.

message 11: by Imagination (new)

Imagination Meg (imaginationmeg) | 60 comments 1: How has the read-a-thon been going for you?
Fine, although I'm not reading as much as I thought I would.
2: Are you enjoying the socializing or the reading more?
The reading - duh!
3: How many books have you started / completed?
5 started and only 1 completed - told you I'm not reading as much as I thought I would!
4: Are you meeting your goals, or have you abandoned them?
Pretty much abandoned them - I am just reading as much as I can now rather than trying to meet a goal.
5: Are you enjoying learning about others with the Daily Questions?
Yes, it's fun getting to know everyone else better and it's also fun answering the questions.
6: Are you enjoying the Daily Recommendations?
Kind-of. I'm not much for looking at everyone else's recommendations because they are so different, but I do like the challenges of recommending books.
7: Have you done any of the Daily Tasks?
Yes, all of them since March 11th. They are quite fun and I love how there are different types.
8: What are your hopes for the 2nd week of the RaT?
To be able to read more.
9: Would you like to see more read-a-thons like this in the future?
I dunno, I guess so. Although I'm really only taking part in the questions and things like that.
10: What, if anything, would make it better for you?
Nothing with a friends requirement. I like learning about everyone else, but I don't really want to add a bunch of friends (no offense guys - I just don't want a bunch of extra people on my profile - it's personal).

message 12: by Jen (last edited Mar 17, 2016 07:02PM) (new)

Jen (reader44ever) | 2930 comments 1: How has the read-a-thon been going for you?
It's been going pretty well. I'm sort of sad, though. I've come to think of Read-a-Thons as times for concentrated reading, but this one is too full of other things for me. I'm not able to read as much as I would like because I'm too busy reading/writing the Daily Questions, reading/recommending the Daily Recommendations, and doing all of the Daily Puzzles and things for the other Leprechaun-Coin-related things happening this month.

2: Are you enjoying the socializing or the reading more?
I'm enjoying the socializing, but as I said above, I wish I had more time in the day to just read. So I'm probably enjoying the reading more.

3: How many books have you started / completed?
Since the RaT began, I've started five and finished four.

4: Are you meeting your goals, or have you abandoned them?
I haven't abandoned any of my goals, but I also don't feel like I'm meeting them. As I said above, I've only finished four of the five books I've started so far. I had hoped to have finished more like a book a day. But a "full" book every second day isn't too bad (one of my four completed books is a children's picture book).

5: Are you enjoying learning about others with the Daily Questions?
Yes, I'm enjoying both answering the DQs and seeing others' responses. I just wish it weren't so time consuming.

6: Are you enjoying the Daily Recommendations?
Yes, it's great fun to recommend books I love and have enjoyed. I'm enjoying seeing others' choices, too, though I haven't read any, yet, or added any (yet) to my TBR. I found it very interesting - and very cool! - that when we did the Spell-It-Out for the full spelling of NBRC, every single one of us chose a different book for the letter U. :-)

7: Have you done any of the Daily Tasks?
Yes, I've managed to complete two. I'm not going out of my way to read books to fit, but if I book I happen to read works I'll count it. :-)

8: What are your hopes for the 2nd week of the RaT?
Just to keep my head above the water. I'd still like to finish a book at least every second day.

9: Would you like to see more read-a-thons like this in the future?
Sure! This is fun. I'd like it if the next one could maybe be an on-its-own thing, though. With this one tied into the Leprechaun Coin things going on...Well...it makes it very complex and time consuming and takes time away from my reading.

10: What, if anything, would make it better for you?
As I said above, I think it'd be better for me if it weren't tied into the rest of the LC events. Having some way to keep track ("read-a-thon tickets" or something) would be fun, but only if it's only the Read-a-Thon that gets us the tickets/coins. (I hope that made sense.)

message 13: by Samantha (last edited Mar 17, 2016 09:49PM) (new)

Samantha (missymaysreadingnook) | 808 comments 1: How has the read-a-thon been going for you?
I've really been enjoying it :) If there's more later on, I'll definitely join up again!

2: Are you enjoying the socializing or the reading more?
I haven't been reading too much the past couple of days because I just started my new job, so less time to read. I REALLY enjoy all the socializing though! I feel like I'm meeting a lot more people and it's making the group much more enjoyable (not that it wasn't enjoyable before :) )

3: How many books have you started / completed?
Let's see...I've finished 3 books and I'm still working on 2 more (Something Wicked This Way Comes and Ink and Bone)

4: Are you meeting your goals, or have you abandoned them?
I'm keeping a good-ish pace I think...I need to read a bit more when I can, but this weekend will help a lot since my fiancé will be out of town all day Sunday. I have 11 books to finish off after I finish the ones I'm reading now. Half of those I should be able to finish in a few hours, so we'll see how it goes.

5: Are you enjoying learning about others with the Daily Questions?
I love the daily questions! They're really cool questions that help me to get to know some of the other members and find connections/support that we didn't know existed before.

6: Are you enjoying the Daily Recommendations?
I do like the recommendations. Although with the word ones, I find myself filling in books that I have read rather than really recommending that someone should read it. At the same time, I'm not putting books on the list that I truly didn't like. That wouldn't be fair, but I don't necessarily have every book I've ever read on Goodreads and my read Goodreads list isn't as vast as I'd like it to be.

7: Have you done any of the Daily Tasks?
Ugh, I think I did one, which was starting a book that relates to LRPG. It's been REALLY hard to do the tasks because I can't start a book every day. If I started a book every day, I'd never finish any of them :/

8: What are your hopes for the 2nd week of the RaT?
Definitely more reading. I'm going to be focusing more on answering the questions and recommendations (I'll look up the recommendations after the month ends) and getting to know people rather than the daily tasks. For me, it's just too much.

9: Would you like to see more read-a-thons like this in the future?
Hahahhaahahhaha totally misread this question the first time. YES!!!!!!

10: What, if anything, would make it better for you?
I really love the socializing. It's something that I was missing out on before. It would be really nice to have a way to motivate myself to hit my goal. I enjoy the books I read, but sometimes to read books that I'm not "feeling" in the moment can be hard. My moods change so often - I'll go from wanting to read a horror novel one afternoon and just a few hours later will be wanting to read a chick lit book. It's crazy and I don't expect you to adapt the Read-a-thon to my craziness :P

It might be cool to have some sort of reward system in place to use as a motivator to keep up. It wouldn't have to be competitive. People could set a goal (like we do for books we want to read in a year on Goodreads), but have point rewards or something every time we achieve a milestone (25% to goal, 50% to goal, etc.) and the people who achieve their own goals get some sort of biggish reward. The idea is definitely in its infant stage.

Jessica Ann (jeskalillis) | -5 comments 1: How has the read-a-thon been going for you?
So far, okay. Though I would like to be reading a little bit more.

2: Are you enjoying the socializing or the reading more?
Both. It is fun getting to know others. And reading is always enjoyable.

3: How many books have you started / completed?
I am in the middle of Red Queen and Ink and Bone.

Finished 3 books: Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz Visions of Heat (Psy-Changeling, #2) by Nalini Singh Beautiful Music for Ugly Children by Kirstin Cronn-Mills

4: Are you meeting your goals, or have you abandoned them?
My goal was to read the book I had checked out from the library and I am doing just that. So I guess I am meeting my goal.

5: Are you enjoying learning about others with the Daily Questions?
Yes.

6: Are you enjoying the Daily Recommendations?
I have not been participating or really looking at the Recommendations.

7: Have you done any of the Daily Tasks?
No, none of the book I am currently reading have qualified.

8: What are your hopes for the 2nd week of the RaT?
To read and finish a few more books.

9: Would you like to see more read-a-thons like this in the future?
Sure, this has been fun.

10: What, if anything, would make it better for you?
I think everything is going well so far. I don't feel pressured to participate in all of it.

message 15: by Rylie (new)

Rylie | 298 comments 1: How has the read-a-thon been going for you?
It’s been going really well. I’ve read over 1000 pages this week, and that’s with taking a break during St. Pattie’s day to spend it with my boyfriend and my other roommates.
2: Are you enjoying the socializing or the reading more?
I’m not sure. I love having a goal of 200 pages a day (it sounds like a lot, but with my screen reading software, I can read that amount in about 2 hours.) But, the social part of it has been extremely enjoyable. I love learning about everyone and making new friends, even if it’s just to compare books. 
3: How many books have you started / completed?
5, I believe. I’m not on my post, so I’m not exactly sure, lol.
4: Are you meeting your goals, or have you abandoned them?
I’m meeting them for the most part, except for yesterday. I gave myself that day to not read anything and just enjoy time with others.
5: Are you enjoying learning about others with the Daily Questions?
Absolutely. It’s one of my favorite parts!
6: Are you enjoying the Daily Recommendations?
I haven’t looked at this as much as I’d like, but I’ve already read 1 book someone recommended. I’d say that’s a success.
7: Have you done any of the Daily Tasks?
I haven’t. Part of why I love challenges so much is tangible reward. If I were to read a book from the daily tasks, I would do it for LC, but it’s hard enough finding a book with a certain colored cover, for me, and almost impossible if there’s another requirement stacked on to that as well.
8: What are your hopes for the 2nd week of the RaT?
I want to keep doing what I’m doing, read another 1500 pages or so, and maybe, now that we’re not doing colored covers for tasks, read 1 or 2 of those…at least, I think we’re through with the rainbow? Also, I want to keep up with the daily questions and keep interacting with others.
9: Would you like to see more read-a-thons like this in the future?
For sure. If any others like this came up, I’d sign up.
10: What, if anything, would make it better for you?
Sometimes the tasks are pretty visual, but that’s to be expected. I just sort of have to deal with it and make due. Otherwise, there’s really nothing I would want to change.

I am loving it! I've never done anything like this before.
2: Are you enjoying the socializing or the reading more?
I'm definitely enjoy the socializing much more than the reading! It's almost like you're giving us a free pass to get to know one another better -- so we can be as silly or as serious as we like.
3: How many books have you started / completed? Started a bunch, looked for more and finished -- exactly none so far!
4: Are you meeting your goals, or have you abandoned them?
5: Are you enjoying learning about others with the Daily Questions?
Yes. Definitely!
6: Are you enjoying the Daily Recommendations?
Again, yes. I love to share and see what books everyone else has read.
7: Have you done any of the Daily Tasks?
I dutifully recorded them, up to #9 when they mysteriously disappeared!
8: What are your hopes for the 2nd week of the RaT?
More fun, more books!
9: Would you like to see more read-a-thons like this in the future?
Yes, please!
10: What, if anything, would make it better for you?
It's pretty darn near perfect just the way it is!

Sorry the tasks haven't been well geared towards you. For the 2nd half of the RaT I was going to make the tasks to read a book with each color in the Title, but since few were doing the tasks, I didn't add it in for today and wasn't planning on it the rest of the week. Perhaps as is, without the colors would be better for you? Or if you wanna really challenge yourself you could do the words in the title, it was going to be the same order of colors, only in the titles.

Hmm, I could try the colors in the title, though there are a lot more books with colored covers than colors in a title. I'm not really sure...

Well, if you haven't noticed, I'm pretty much on GoodReads all my waking hours. If you ever wanna ask me to find a color for you, or if a cover has a color, let me know!! :)

I think you read Great Zoo before the read-a-thon started? It's very red. :) Scarlet, Beastly and Darker Shade of Magic on your shelves all have some red. A bunch of your books have blue and you have a bunch of other stuffs in there as well.

I'm a very visual person so my challenges do focus on the visual. I have some upcoming ones that will, though the big one later in the year will have other options sometimes as well, so I'll be glad to help where I can, since if you wanna do any of my challenges I'm making it harder on you. :/

First of all, I want you to know that I'm not bitter about the difficulty at all. I've dealt with having to find alternative techniques or work-arounds for so many things in my life. It's just part of the challenge, and I still think I'm holding my own quite well.
That being said, any help you wanna give me in this area is so appreciated. I'll probably, sometimes, message you a list of a few books that'll fit a task, and see if any of them have the colored cover that also fits the task, or ask you if you have any recommendations, if I'm just completely stumped. Kind of like The Great Zoo with the pointy dragon tail for the main RPG, things like that. I hope that would be ok. :)
I have absolutely loved getting involved in everything here, the challenges, and the readathons, and most of it is completely doable for me. It's just those few extremely visual aspects that can sometimes be really challenging.
Luckily, there are a lot of lists that have started popping up, "books with trees on covers" or "black covers" or "grass on cover." These have been super helpful as well.
Just, thanks so much for being so inclusive and working with me on colors, and all of the mods working with me on puzzles, and putting alt text in all of your images now, and so much more. You're seriously the greatest. :)

I'm glad to help, Rylie. As I mentioned, I'm pretty much always around, even if I'm playing games my laptop is open right next to me and usually open to GoodReads, so anytime you want to message me, please feel free!! :) It'll never be a problem.

We do what we can to make everything here fun and accessible for all. I'm just glad that little tweaks we can do have made a difference to you.
