This is a children's book or young adult book. I read it late 60s -- possibly early 70s.
It is a mystery set in Hawaii. The most vivid scene I can recall is the main characters are in a lava tube (cave) where evidence is found. They need to leave quickly because there is another lava flow coming down the tube. A bit unrealistic, I know, since molten lava in a lava tube tends to flow VERY quickly. But I was a kid.

bookel | 4029 comments Volcano trap by Helen Mather-Smith Mindlin (1958). Pug copes with jungles and a volcano when he travels to Hawaii with the Warren family.

It's on openlibrary.org, free to borrow and read the ebook, which is just a scan of a library book.

Following up on bookel's suggestion of "Volcano Trap", Worldcat.org lists these subjects:

Detective and mystery stories.
Hawaii -- Fiction.

Thank you Kris and bookel!
This could be the book. The plot summary below hits some of memory, although I don't recall some plot elements.

The book is not on goodreads. I'm pasting the Kirkus Review plot summary below. This could be posted as Probably Solved.

KIRKUS REVIEW

Though the sixteen-year-old Hohu twins are older than Dorothy and Frank Warren and their friend Pug, they eagerly look forward to showing their friends from Philadelphia their native island of Hawaii. Kam Hohu is particularly anxious to show the mainlanders the volcanic areas of the island, and though they are trapped within a crater, imprisoned by three whimsical Japanese soldiers who, ten years after the armistice, believe that the war is still on, and nearly obliterated by the furious eruptions of Mauna Loa, the five children not only thoroughly relish their ordeal, but help to vindicate a Chinese ranch hand who has been unjustly accused of cattle stealing. There is humor, adventure and interesting geographic detail in this lively tour of the Hawaiian Islands.

bookel | 4029 comments Have you read the ebook? On openlibrary.org free to borrow. You can even read within the Internet browser if you don't use a program like Bluefire Reader, which is easy to use. I would definitely say it's the book.

Added. It usually takes a few minutes or longer to be searchable in the database. At that point add book/author can be used.
