Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments It's baaaaack! Are you ready to get your read-a-thon on? For those of you who were in the 2015 group, this should look familiar. If you're new to the group in 2016, allow us to explain!

How does this work?
If you’re new to read-a-thons, don't worry! They're very simple. You make a commitment to read as much as you can for a set period of time and then you do it. There are often games, challenges, and, at times, even prizes associated with the event but, for the most part, it's about reading and camaraderie.

For our read-a-thon, we'll be committing to read as much as we can for one week. The week long format gives more members more opportunities to participate! There will be games, progress posts, discussions for participants to join in on, as well as plenty of encouragement along the way. And... yes, maybe even a prize or two. *wink wink* Stay tuned! If you're lagging behind on your goal and looking for an excuse to play catch up, this is it!

How much do I have to read?
There isn’t a set amount you are required to read to participate. Many people choose to set personal goals for themselves but the idea is just to read as much as you can for the week and see what you end up with at the end. It’s all in good fun!

When is this happening?
START:
Wednesday, April 13th @ 12:00 AM (EST)

END:
Tuesday, April 19th @ 11:59 PM (EST)

If you don't live in EST, you can find your start time here.

How do I participate?
All you have to do to join up is to read! But read-a-thons are always much more fun if you participate in the games, join the discussion, and track your progress so we strongly encourage everyone to take part in that.

Where do I participate?
Keep on eye on this folder during the Read-a-Thon for updates, progress reports, and more! They'll start being posted closer to (and after) the event starts.

We'll be posting little games and challenges for you guys to engage in along the way. We'll be posting new games every 12 hours throughout the week in this folder but you'll have all week to join in if you missed anything. The discussions and games keep the event active and lively so, again, we strongly encourage participation. Come play along and have some fun!

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments Yay I'm so happy we're doing a read-a-thon! I can't wait to have the perfect excuse to tell my boyfriend: sorry tonight I won't watch tv shows with you, I'm reading ;)

message 3: by Amy (new)

Amy (thenikitagirl) | 244 comments That made me giggle, Sophie :)

message 4: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (mich2689) | 484 comments I won't be able to give the same excuse, Sophie. I'm going to be on vacation with my boyfriend until the 17th. I'm sure he will be very unhappy if I'm reading all the time. I guess I'll be reading a lot on the last two days of the readathon. :)

message 5: by Adam (new)

Adam Smith (chaos624) | 1197 comments Sounds fun. If things go to plan I should be free to relax and do nothing but read during that time. Something to look forward to.

message 6: by Francesca (new)

Francesca (eufrosine85) | 67 comments it will be my first read-a-thon =) I'm not a fast reader but I want to try... I will be on vacation from 15th to 22th of april... so maybe I can enjoy relax and reading!

message 7: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments No worries, Francesca, it is all about having fun! You're welcome to read at your own pace. The idea is just to commit to the challenge of reading as much as you're able for the week and to have fun with the group! :)

message 8: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3839 comments Sounds like fun! I wish it was the week after, though, since I work in a tax office and April 18th is the last day of the tax season. I have lots of free time, starting on April 19th!

message 9: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 85 comments Looking forward to this!

message 10: by Valerie (new)

Valerie | 383 comments So, if I join the read-a-thon, I would just read as much as possible throughout the day...morning, noon, and night, as well as...any books I want to?

message 11: by Brianna (new)

Brianna (bebecburt) | 546 comments I love read-a-thons but don't have the best track record with them. However, I plan on enjoying them anyway! I can't wait until April now!

message 12: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments Valerie > yes, as much as you can fit in your schedule and you're free to choose your books. Usually, if it's a free day, we only read-eat-sleep during the read-a-thon, and check here our progress and do some games :)

I'll work during this week but my evenings will be for reading!

message 13: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments I never have any idea what I'll be doing when, so I'll just hope to be able to join in!

message 14: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments The date is creeping closer. Hope you're all as excited as I am. I'm already mapping out my plan for the week.

I'm a big planner. Not a big follow-througher. But a big planner. Maybe I'll stick to the books this time? Haha.

message 15: by Brianna (new)

Brianna (bebecburt) | 546 comments I think I'm going to go for a specific page count than book count. Anytime I've done a book count I've psyched myself out so I'm hoping that won't limit me. I may also do specific time amounts each day-like read uninterrupted (or as close to uninterrupted) for like an hour and a half-or something like that.

message 16: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments Emm, we are soul mates. I can plan like a boss, but following through ... not so much.

message 17: by Adam (new)

Adam Smith (chaos624) | 1197 comments I'm through with work, so I'll probably give myself a blank check to binge read as many books as possible during that time.

message 18: by Valerie (new)

How do we track our reading? Is it the time spent? The number of pages? The number of books? In school, when the kids all read for 20 minutes a day for a month, it was number of minutes, I think.

message 19: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments We each set our own goals, Valerie - it's very relaxed!

message 20: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
You can track however you would like. It wouldn't really be fair to require a certain tracking system since people read such a variety of formats and at differing speeds and for different amounts of time. The goal is just to read as much as you can in that week... and to participate in the group activities :P

message 21: by Aglaea (new)

Aglaea | 369 comments I shudder! You know that gut-wrenching feeling, a mix of terror, excitement, a dash of madness, and "are we there yet?", well that's what I feel when reading this. I'm so in! Can't promise a lot of reading, but since it will be with purpose then...

By the way, the link leads to the old event, and I'm a bit confused still in regards to the 12-hour clock's 12 am, is that midnight, which is called 00:00 elsewhere? Or lunch time aka 12:00 elsewhere? (The hour after lunch is 13:00 in the 24-hour clock.)

I tried to edit the event, but fear I'd mess up the time somehow, so perhaps you can post the correct times? It should be possible to simply edit right beneath the clock thingy.

message 22: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments 12am is midnight (the am/pm thing is hell when you live in the 24h world x_x). So we'll start the 13th at 0h01, if I understood correctly :)

message 23: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments Whoops! Thanks for pointing that out Aglaea. I updated it for 2016. :x

message 36: by Jill (new)

Jill Tool I'm ready to start, got my books lined up, ready to go that I want to read.

message 37: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments 2 hours and 33 minutes!

message 38: by Brianna (new)

Brianna (bebecburt) | 546 comments I think my goal will be for 1,500 pages. I'm in the middle of quite a few books so that should help finish some and put a dent in some others.

message 39: by Francesca (new)

Francesca | 780 comments I'm not going to set any specific goal but I'm just going to plan to do as much reading as possible this week. I have the evenings after work, I know I'm not doing anything on Sunday so I can read a lot then, I'm spending the day with my friend on Saturday and baby-sitting/taking my Nephew out on Monday but I can read before and after both of those. My aim is to get a lot further through American Psycho and ideally finish it but I won't be too upset if I don't manage it.
