Trying to find the title of the book that involved a family in an old victorian house ?. The house was falling apart and the mother wanted to keep it running like old days. The eldest son sold parts of it's land to keep repairing the home. The son kept to himself a lot because he felt strange spirits in the home. They had maids to prepare the food and maintain the home but as time passed they were dismissed because they could no longer afford to pay them. Only one remained in the home. Annually the family held balls at the home. Many years passed without the annual ball because of the condition of the home. At some point they decided to have another ball even though the house was in ruin and it was embarrassing to show the condition of the house. On the eve of the ball the family dog, very much loved by one of the daughters, bit one of the guests in the face. This became a tragedy amongst the family and the guests of the ball. They were asked to put the dog down which was devastating to the eldest daughter. One of the guests who attended that evening was a doctor who help repair the young child's face from the dog bite. As the story unfolded the doctor continued to visit the home afterward on a regular basis. IT was during these visits that the doctor discovered that the son was suffering from unusual encounters with the house's negative energy. The doctor felt that the son was going mad and eventually suggested the family put him in a mental institution. Later the spirits in the home became apparent to the house maid and the one daughter as well. The doctor and the daughter eventually fell in love with one another which developed through the regular visits to help with her brother. Unfortunately, the daughter felt that the doctor was more in love with the old home than he was with her. Eventually, the relationship dissolved as she was too nervous to be married. I forget how the story ended but I believe most of the characters died including the mother of the children.

The Little Stranger came out in 2009. Are you saying that was not the book you read last year?
I think it is the book! I remember now the authors name was Sarah Waters. Thanks for figuring it out!!!
