Clever Cat?
Tibs, the orange tabby hero of Clever Cat, knows that being the cat of a busy working family means patiently waiting around a lot--to be let out, to be let in, to be fed. So one day Tibs takes matters into his own paws. To the amazement of his family, he opens up a can of cat food and serves himself. Soon he's a cat about town, with a set of house keys to come and go as he pleases and the use of Mrs. Ford's bank card to buy his own food--and a few other things that tickle his fancy. He regards the other kitties in the neighborhood, snoozing in the sun
all day, and thinks, What a bore! But when Mrs. Ford's monthly bank statement arrives, suddenly this clever cat must earn his keep, and Tibs begins to wonder if he's too smart for his own good.

1. He started out as any other cat, waiting around for the family he was with (a family of four - mom, dad, sister, brother) to open cans of cat food for him.
2. But as his family members were all very busy, they kept forgetting or delaying to open cat food cans for him.
3. So one day, he opened a can of cat food all by himself.
4. Upon the discovery that he could open cat food cans, the family left out more cat food cans for him to open by himself.
5. Later the family went on to leaving him money to go by cat food for himself.
6. Having the ability to spend money, he bought more and more, not limiting the spending to cat food only.
7. Needing more money, he requested for more money from the family.
8. Noticing how much the cat was spending, the family had him sit down for a talk, which resulted in the conclusion that he should go work to earn money by himself.
9. So the cat went to work and he felt more superior than all those other cats who were just lying around sunbathing and waiting for someone to help them open cans of cat food.
10. But as days went by, the cat started to realize how much work he had to do for just a can of cat food.
11. With the new realization, he stopped working, he stopped buying things for himself, and he stopped opening cans of cat food for himself. He just went back to being the the kind of cat he was in the past, lying around doing nothing but waiting for others to open cat food cans for him.
12. The family he was with was quite confused and even enraged that the cat could no long do anything, but then later gave in and started opening cans of cat food for him again.
The storybook was supposedly a children's storybook, but it felt like it was more appropriate for adults, given the storyline.
I vaguely remember the book's cover to be orange, but I may be wrong. I read this about one or two years ago.
I wanted to recommend this book to a friend who mentioned wanting to switch positions with his cats, but there was no trace of the title of this book in my mind. I had tried searching in my library's lending history and many other locations, but no luck. Please help! Thanks!
