I have been thinking the same thing but I still don't think that justifies the guilty. I think it also stems from not being able to stop the murder of her family even though she was a child and maybe survivor guilt from not being a part of the Trail of Tears.

Either way (view spoiler)

Annie Johnson | 50 comments Has anyone read the short stories in between main books? I just read Death's Rival and I am starting to feel like I am missing some big pieces to the story by not reading these.

message 103: by Myst (new)

Myst | 108 comments They might make their way onto next year's tbr. Atm I'm swamped and falling further behind every day.

message 104: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Basile (smashreads) Ok Members! On to the next book:

Death's Rival
Reading Dates: June 7th - June 28th

How did everyone like the last book, Raven Crossed?

I can understand that! I have so many and I keep adding to my list.

Myst | 108 comments If Jane hadn't been blaming herself for every action of everyone else it would've been a good book. Clearly Evie had gone dark years before, possibly before Jane even met the family.

The blame for (almost) everything going topsy turvy in RC is due to Evie's history and choices.

How the hotel room attempted murder fits into the long term scheme of things remains to be seen.

Sylwia (sylwialovesloki) Starting on death's rival and annoyed by having to read about Jane tooling up again. It's book 5 Faith, I wont be surprised if Jane whips a gun out of her hair. I know thats how she rolls.

message 108: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Basile (smashreads) lol, yeah... I dislike that in any long running series... but I just skim through it

message 109: by Sylwia (last edited Jun 21, 2016 11:55AM) (new)

Sylwia (sylwialovesloki) Also, Jane keeps complaining about things, then saying "not that I'm complaining." You're a whiner and a martyr Jane.

message 110: by Myst (new)

Myst | 108 comments At least in this book she's stopped blaming herself for *every* single action that others took which ended somewhat heartbreaking for her.

message 111: by Sylwia (new)

Sylwia (sylwialovesloki) She still partially blamed herself for the (view spoiler). I hope Jane comes to some better self-knowledge over the course of the series.

message 112: by Myst (new)

Myst | 108 comments Well it wasn't the whaaa whaaa Molly hates me because her sister did bad decisions A, B, C, D, E, or whaaa whaaa it's all my fault vampires kidnapped Molly's kids because they came to visit when big E was off doing something.

The forced blood feeding was Jane's problem alone since she said something without fully understanding what it would mean. So that one didn't irritate me so much.

message 113: by Sylwia (new)

Sylwia (sylwialovesloki) I finished deaths rival. Going on to blood trade cause its in from the library.
I enjoyed Deaths Rival, but feel that there should be consequences to Leo for the tricks pulled. If there arent then it's just lame.

Agreed. I got Blood Trade from the library but have some books in front of it to finish.

message 115: by Sylwia (new)

Sylwia (sylwialovesloki) Finished Blood Trade. Five stars. Faith showed restraint by putting the major tooling up scene more than halfway through the book. The character has evolved nicely, no more whining. Takes credit where it is due. The action was very good. Many characters and relationships were clarified. But, at one point Jane mentions that another woman is wearing a weird turban thingie. Pot kettle black Jane.

message 116: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Basile (smashreads) Sorry for the late post, but our next book begins, for those of you still staying on schedule!

Blood Trade
Reading Dates: June 29th - July 20th

message 117: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Basile (smashreads) I read this one already, since I'm going on vacation the first week of July.

5 Stars!

I really enjoyed this one, Jane is really coming into her character. And I just love Beast.

message 118: by Cindy (Squin) (new)

Cindy (Squin) | 243 comments I'm just starting on Blood Trade. I absolutely loved Death's Rival. My favorite of the series so far.

message 119: by Myst (new)

Myst | 108 comments Wow, Jane went from unreasonable self-flagellation, to being a normal person who knows they're not responsible for everyone else's decision almost overnight.

Blood Trade was quite good. Jane does need to sleep more though when in the midst of an assignment though.

I have been pretty happy with this personality change. I was really annoyed with all the blame she put on herself in the last couple of books.

message 121: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Basile (smashreads) Alright everyone! Did everyone enjoy Blood Trade?

NEXT UP we have...

Black Arts
Reading Dates: July 21st - August 11th

Reading starts tomorrow!!!

message 122: by Sylwia (last edited Jul 21, 2016 12:33PM) (new)

Sylwia (sylwialovesloki) Finished Black Arts. The character changes remained solid. And hopefully we have seen the last of Rick. The story could have moved faster. Jane slept more. And blamed herself a bit too much but was not as woe is me as she sometimes is.

message 123: by Cindy (Squin) (new)

Cindy (Squin) | 243 comments I absolutely loved Blood Trade. I finished it on Sunday and it might have been my favorite of the series so far. I know he wasn't new to the series in that book, but I have to say that I love Eli. I never really had too much of anything against Rick, but I feel like that has run its course and she needs to get to getting with Bruiser like, pronto!

I started Black Arts yesterday and I'm liking it a lot so far!

message 124: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Basile (smashreads) I really liked the last 2 books. I wish it wasn't almost the end of the series.

message 125: by Cindy (Squin) (new)

Cindy (Squin) | 243 comments I finished Black Arts and I already have Broken Soul in my clutches! I'll wait to begin on that one until the group moves forward with it.

I really enjoyed Black Arts. Again, my stance has not changed for many books and Bruiser needs to get his time to shine already! Also of note, I just love Angie Baby and Little Evan. SO cute - they remind me of my own niece and nephew, which makes me love them even more. I really like how Jane is really becoming okay with who she is as a person and not seeing everything about her as something to hide or apologize for.

message 126: by Myst (new)

Myst | 108 comments Just finished Broken Soul. Argh! More of Jane blaming herself!

It is *not* her fault she's only been learning vampire history for the past 6-9 months, and learning that other creatures do exist. Or that black magic objects do exist. There is only so much time in a day after all...

And is Leo *really* going to tell her a few hundred years ago he pissed off X vampire, so watch for plots from X! No, not until something is happening, and even then he only reluctantly gives her vital information.

Although Leo keeping secret who his "guest" is, makes sense.

Myst | 108 comments Since we're getting close to the end on the Jane Yellowrock series, should nominations for a new series be opened?

message 128: by Myst (new)

Myst | 108 comments So I just attempted to figure out FH's website...it *looks* like she puts short stories in her blog posts, but some are pw protected, others serialized, and there's no TOC or anything to figure out where to look for the next installment other than going through the blog page by page (with 3 blogs per page?) so 84 blogs which are all super short, but not well organized.

The reason I tried to look at her site is in the back of Dark Heir, it's got a preview of the new Soulwood series she's writing with a release date of oct 2015. Well that just came out 10 months later so I was trying to figure out why it was delayed. (Got too frustrated with how the blog was set up to get that far.)

Tried to see if her site was updated with the stories she's been putting on the blog, nope.

Does anyone else look at her site?

message 129: by Ashley (last edited Sep 09, 2016 08:03AM) (new)

Ashley Basile (smashreads) we will be selecting a new series soon! look for a post in the near future!

I haven't looked at her site, but I have wanted to since there are SO many short stories for this series and I want at them!! Were you able to read some of the ones she put up?

message 131: by Myst (new)

Myst | 108 comments I haven't gotten there yet. From the 2 I found that are available, neither is on GR that I could see. Meanwhile my library books are getting closer to needing to be returned/renewed so they have priority.

message 132: by Myst (new)

Myst | 108 comments Finished Dark Heir the other day. Some of it was ok, some of it I just didn't like. Jane keeps not believing in herself and/or blaming herself for others choices. And I was having a hard time following some of the magic stuff.

And what exactly is a "fighting queue" for her hair? I thought it was a french braid, but it doesn't seem like it. It's clearly not just a nape of the neck braid. Is it a pony tail that she braids?

Annie Johnson | 50 comments Myst wrote: "Finished Dark Heir the other day. Some of it was ok, some of it I just didn't like. Jane keeps not believing in herself and/or blaming herself for others choices. And I was having a hard time follo..."

I am reading Dark Heir as well and I am glad that I wasn't the only one confused by "fighting queue". I don't know why but in these books I tend to have wardrobe or hair hang-ups. Still like the series though :)

message 134: by Sylwia (last edited Sep 05, 2016 03:48PM) (new)

Sylwia (sylwialovesloki) Read Broken Soul. It was really good. Nice to see the relationships built up pay off. Nice to see Jane stand up for herself. Happy Bruiser finally got some snu-snu.

Starting Dark Heir now.

message 135: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Basile (smashreads) I have finished Dark Heir, and I'm trying to find a loaner copy of Shadow Rites.... it's so much newer, I may have to buy it.

I have definitely liked both Jane and Beast's character progression, and I like Bruiser so much! I think there is some depth to that relationship. I really want our main vamp squeeze to become the character I think he is deep down.... good. But, he continues to stay just on the outside... maybe it's for the best, though.

message 136: by Sylwia (last edited Sep 08, 2016 10:16PM) (new)

Sylwia (sylwialovesloki) I finished Dark Heir. Jane is self recriminating again, which I dont like. But I like Alex/Eli and love Bruiser. I hoped for more development of the overarching plot line. My library has broken soul, you could ask for an ILL. Free is better.

message 137: by Myst (new)

Myst | 108 comments Just finished Shadow Rites...is it just me or is Eli super-human? He seems to require less sleep than Jane. He's doing his job, cooking, cleaning etc which is more than anyone else. Even his brother seems to run on less sleep than most.

message 138: by Sylwia (new)

Sylwia (sylwialovesloki) Shadow Rites was very good.
