SOLVED. Antique desk, notebook, "The L" [s]

I read this book somewhere between 2004-2008, so I think it's a children's/ young adult book.
The young female protagonist gets an antique desk and a cool journal from her mom. I seem to remember whe was unhappy about the desk, but am not 100% sure on that.
She decides to use the notebook for the journal assignments that they get in class, thinking "it'll be cooler than anything anyone else has" or something along those lines
there was another notebook found that is exactly like hers, and after she finds it, weird things start happening. She left her journal on her desk and when she came back the words "The L" were written on the open page.
Somehow the protagonist figures out that the girl who owned the other notebook went missing or was murdered, so she tries to solve the mystery.
In the end, she is in the woods looking for the body of the girl and finds it, (I think there's something about the dog digging and unearthing the arm of the body). There's a man there too who wants to hurt her as well, since she was snooping around. I think the man was significant to the story in some way too, maybe a teacher or the mom's boyfriend?


This is all I can remember, any help would be AWESOME, since it's been driving me crazy for a few days now.
