Have just started to read Holding by Graham Norton - hooked from page 1 - is really good. Is a mystery - light rather than cosy - he is a very good writer!

My library has purchased Two Steps Forward by Graeme Simsion and automatically checked out to me as it was one I recommended. He wrote this one with his wife Anne Buist. Has anyone else read it yet?

Yes, I liked it but I 'thought' I would love it. I think I was caught up in a preconceived idea of what it would be about (my own). It is different to Rosie Project which I loved but I felt there was a similarity in a character.

I'm rarely up on the latest books as I op shop most of my books. I catch up in my own time. Today my friend Jayne lent me her copy of The Dry by Jane Harper I'm about 90 pages in and thinking it is a great book.

I have a lot of bookish sites on Facebook too - and follow a lot of blogs -but had no idea this one existed till last week when someone mentioned it in this group.

I'm currently listening to Annie Murray's The Narrowboat Girl. She is one of my favourites. :)

I'm still deliberating on which of my traditional paperbacks to read next.... I've got too many to choose from! ;) I'll no doubt choose something soon enough!

I'm having to make use of the challenges to help me decide what to read next!! I'm also glad I've reduced the levels of challenges as I'm able to choose a book on a whim! I love it!!

And yes, I'll figure it out soon enough I'm sure. :) Yes, I think the November challenge should be up soon, so that will help me choose if I haven't made a decision before then! Although I won't have a lot of quality reading time over the next few weeks to a month as I'll have to work on 11 student reports.... *sigh*

It's an excellent series, Kylie. Word to the wise, it's very hard to find some of the books in the series for some reason but I did find them on Audible. Narrator Caroline Lee is amazing! I could enjoy her voice reading the ingredients on a cereal box so I can definitely recommend the audio book format!

That's funny, Li'l Owl - I listened to Frantic narrated by Caroline Lee and swore never to listen to another audiobook narrated by her again!! I couldn't wait for it to finish because I couldn't stand the accent she used - so terribly "ocker" Australian. I've since read the next Katherine Howell books normally and enjoyed them.

And I've also since listened to other books narrated by Caroline Lee - with trepidation - but none of the others have been like that! I thought she did a particularly good job of Kate Morton's The Forgotten Garden.

That is interesting, Kathryn. I didn't start listening to them until the 4th in the series. Living in the US my ear wouldn't pick up a different accent so it sounded good to me!

Really? You can't hear different Australian accents? I often can't hear much of a difference in Australian accents (apart from the "ocker" and more "urban" accents - and they're less location-based than UK or US accents, although some people seem to be able to tell where some Aust accents are form), but I can definitely hear different American accents! I can't tell where they're from, but I can tell some are different!

Maybe Caroline Lee used a different "voice" for other books...

Australian accents are more based on socioeconomic status than location. It's interesting when you hear actors trying to portray working class Aussies. It's obvious people who become actors generally grew up quite privileged. David Wenham is a notable exception - his working class portrayals are very authentic, however looking at his wiki page he grew up in Marrickville, which in the 70s was a fairly poor suburb.

But in general, Australian actors seem to have an idea of what working class people sound like that just comes across as parody.

Ah, yes, I see what you mean, Kathryn. Maybe this a better way to say it. I can definitely hear the difference between narrators Caroline Lee, Susan Strafford, & Kate Hosking.

But I wouldn't necessarily know if the 'voice' the narrator is using would match what the characters social status should be.
If I'm understanding you correctly, a narration that is not done well would sound like the person is only reading' or 'speaking' the words written by the author (perhaps as they would normally speak) but the inflection, tone, and accent wouldn't fit the individual characters socioeconomic class as they should be portrayed within the story.

I didn't listen to Frantic on audio book. The ones that I did hear on audio
were only books 4, 5, and 7 so I didn't have that one to compare it with.
Then again, I wasn't aware of the distinction before.

Now I'm a more educated audio book listener! So I'm probably going to be a better reviewer of audio book narrators now. And that's a good thing! Thanks Kathryn. =o)

I am reading Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden at the moment - and completely and utterly swept into the story. I thought I had already read it - but it is all new to me (or maybe it was so long ago - pre-goodreads that I have forgotten).

At this rate (unless it all goes belly up in the last quarter) it is heading for a 5 star rating.

I have just started the first in a new paranormal series Dead Man Talking by Jana Deleon.

There are 4 books in the series - each book by a different author and each can be read as a stand-alone but is connected to the other books each is being released a different week. I preordered them all and have the first two with two more to go by the end of October.
