What Are You Currently Reading? (doesn't have to be an Aussie book) - Part 2
I'm about to start Button Holed by Kylie Logan. I'm not a big cozy fan but wanted something light to read to finish off my Winter Challenge. I've been a button collector for many years so think this one should be cute.
None of the books I've committed to reading for challenges within this group are appealing to me right now, unfortunately. I need to get back to basics and re-read an old favourite (or seven). I was given the Harry Potter box set for my birthday a few weeks ago, so after I finish One of Us Is Lying, onto the Harry Potter re-read I go!
Don't you just hate that, Niamh! Sometimes the best way to help that is to reread something you know you'll really like! Enjoy!
Spent so long trying to get through After Alice and The Books of the South, but finally gave up and (after re-reading Harry Potter just for fun) started Gray's Shadow by Aussie author Robbie Polack, which I bought back in Feb but had only read a couple pages. Picked it up again last night and already a quarter of the way through!
Well Ryan, I have mixed feelings about it. Although I read it quite fast, there are many incoherences or plot holes. The antagonist is one of the sickest villain but the protagonist lacks of substance. And for a 550 pages or so book I was expecting a better thought end. It was still a very enjoyable read, don't get me wrong, just that I was expecting more from Stephen King.
Yeah I read his sort-of-autobiography On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft and loved it, so I was keen to read some Stephen King. But the two I've read - Mr. Mercedes and The Gunslinger - have been good without being great. I should probably read some of his more famous books. They are obviously famous for a reason.
Ryan wrote: "It's very creepy, Jess."Im loving it so far, great for reading as it rains and thunders outside.
I knew when I started The Plea that is was not Capital L Literature. I've read The Defence the first book of the series so I'm well aware it's a legal thriller. But on page 17 (my italics) "The file contained three pages. Neither of them made much sense to me." Oh dear, Steve Cavanagh is going to have to do something spectacular to erase that from my mind. I'd class these books somewhere on the scale between James Patterson and John Grisham

Did you ever read the rest of the Gunslinger series Ryan?
The movie is out next week and the trailer looks fantastic. Roland and The Man in Black are very well cast.

I've just started River Run by Nicole Alexander.I'm also listening to Murphy's Law by Rhys Bowen.
Both these are books on my list for the Armchair August Challenge! :)
I'm about 160 pages in on The Summer Before the War by Helen Simonson It's my first book for Armchair August.

I saw the trailer last night before Dunkirk. I haven't read beyond The Gunslinger, but I feel like I have to before seeing the movie. It looked awesome.

I also saw the trailer before Dunkirk. It had me at the chime of the pocket watch from For A Few Dollars More, which is one of my favourite films. I’ll probably end up watching the film before getting to the books. I’m also looking forward to Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express.
What did you think of Dunkirk, Ryan?
I thought Dunkirk was absolutely brilliant. Not for the story or characterisation, but just for the sense of authenticity. If I want plot and characters I'll read a book. But for that level of visual detail it needs to be the big screen. I loved it.MotOE looked good too.

It really makes you think about what it must have been like for all of those soldiers on the beach.
Yeah they were legit. Seeing those authentic war movies makes my own military career feel like an absolute joke in comparison.
Still reading River Run by Nicole Alexander. Am about to start listening to The Returning Tide by Liz Fenwick
I've had a bit of a reading slump this week - have 3 books started but just cant commit to any of them. And they all start out good so is not their fault. Think I'm going to settle on
The Twisted Knot by J.M. Peace as the first in the series was a 5 star read for me.
Coincidences....
First I read this
and then I read this
and even though they are set in different countries the covers are so similar.
And then both featured dead bodies being hung up from the rafters.

Just started the first g the Body Farm series Carved in Bone by Jefferson Bass
This is my second time reading this series, the first time was so long ago that all I do remember is that I loved it and that it's one of my favorite series. I absolutely love forensics so this is right up my alley and I needed a book to fit in a challenge so I'm starting at the beginning once more. The 9th one came out in 2015, the 10th in 2016, neither of which I've read so I figured I would enjoy them more if the previous books were fresh in my mind.
I'm about to start a romance set in New Zealand and has a gorgeous Rugby 'All Black' player as the main male.Just Good Friends by Rosalind James
Is the second in the 'escape to New Zealand' series
Carolyn wrote: "I'm enjoying the new book by Michael Robotham, The Secrets She Keeps. It starts off a bit like a Liane Moriarty, with two pregnant women going about..."
I was thinking about Nicole Trope as I began this one, Carolyn. I'm really enjoying it. Will finish it tonight.

That one does sound amazing! And Suzanne, it'll be my first Michael Robotham novel too when I get around to reading it. :)I'm currently reading River Run by Nicole Alexander, and listening to my audiobook of The Last Girl by Jane Casey.
