I'm about to start Button Holed by Kylie Logan. I'm not a big cozy fan but wanted something light to read to finish off my Winter Challenge. I've been a button collector for many years so think this one should be cute.

None of the books I've committed to reading for challenges within this group are appealing to me right now, unfortunately. I need to get back to basics and re-read an old favourite (or seven). I was given the Harry Potter box set for my birthday a few weeks ago, so after I finish One of Us Is Lying, onto the Harry Potter re-read I go!

Spent so long trying to get through After Alice and The Books of the South, but finally gave up and (after re-reading Harry Potter just for fun) started Gray's Shadow by Aussie author Robbie Polack, which I bought back in Feb but had only read a couple pages. Picked it up again last night and already a quarter of the way through!

Well Ryan, I have mixed feelings about it. Although I read it quite fast, there are many incoherences or plot holes. The antagonist is one of the sickest villain but the protagonist lacks of substance. And for a 550 pages or so book I was expecting a better thought end. It was still a very enjoyable read, don't get me wrong, just that I was expecting more from Stephen King.

Yeah I read his sort-of-autobiography On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft and loved it, so I was keen to read some Stephen King. But the two I've read - Mr. Mercedes and The Gunslinger - have been good without being great. I should probably read some of his more famous books. They are obviously famous for a reason.

I knew when I started The Plea that is was not Capital L Literature. I've read The Defence the first book of the series so I'm well aware it's a legal thriller. But on page 17 (my italics) "The file contained three pages. Neither of them made much sense to me." Oh dear, Steve Cavanagh is going to have to do something spectacular to erase that from my mind.

I'd class these books somewhere on the scale between James Patterson and John Grisham

The movie is out next week and the trailer looks fantastic. Roland and The Man in Black are very well cast.

I saw the trailer last night before Dunkirk. I haven't read beyond The Gunslinger, but I feel like I have to before seeing the movie. It looked awesome.

I also saw the trailer before Dunkirk. It had me at the chime of the pocket watch from For A Few Dollars More, which is one of my favourite films. I’ll probably end up watching the film before getting to the books. I’m also looking forward to Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express.

What did you think of Dunkirk, Ryan?

I thought Dunkirk was absolutely brilliant. Not for the story or characterisation, but just for the sense of authenticity. If I want plot and characters I'll read a book. But for that level of visual detail it needs to be the big screen. I loved it.

Yeah, it's pretty lean and stripped back. I thought the sound design for those approaching planes was very well done. It really makes you think about what it must have been like for all of those soldiers on the beach.

Yeah they were legit. Seeing those authentic war movies makes my own military career feel like an absolute joke in comparison.

Think I'm going to settle on The Twisted Knot by J.M. Peace as the first in the series was a 5 star read for me.

Just started the first g the Body Farm series

This is my second time reading this series, the first time was so long ago that all I do remember is that I loved it and that it's one of my favorite series. I absolutely love forensics so this is right up my alley and I needed a book to fit in a challenge so I'm starting at the beginning once more. The 9th one came out in 2015, the 10th in 2016, neither of which I've read so I figured I would enjoy them more if the previous books were fresh in my mind.
