Casey (casey-h) | 51 comments A friend of mine loves audible.com, she's constantly trying to convince me to use it. She has an hour commute to work and she uses it in the car.

Jenn | 6 comments The Run of His Life : The People versus O. J. Simpson, which I loved, and The Wise Man's Fear, which infuriated and intrigued me by turns. Think George RR Martin with no editing whatsoever. Beautifully written and filled with nonsense meandering.

Okay guys more group opinions time:

have you read/what do you think of

1Q84

11/22/63

or

the Goldfinch

(these are all audiobooks i'm considering cuz I need long things to listen to at work)

message 55: by bailey (new)

bailey | 11 comments I read The Goldfinch, and was a little underwhelmed

I listened to the Goldfinch audiobook - it was LONG but I think I enjoyed listening to the audiobook more than I would have enjoyed reading the book, maybe because the audiobook kept me from skimming descriptive passages that I might have otherwise but did actually contribute to the feeling of the book as a whole.

Oh oh thank you! That's exactly what I'm looking for too, books that I do not exactly want to take the time to read in carbon but am interested enough to listen, so that is a helpful tip! :)

message 58: by Jess (new)

Jess (jesmy777) RE: JS& MN - I have had it on my to read list forever. I have gotten through about half of it and then wander away. After watching the miniseries, I'm really ready to read it this year.
I have read the sequel with the folk tales, I happened to grab it because of the art!

Jess (jesmy777) RE: Audible - I use the digital library and Overdrive for audiobooks. I am trying to get in the habit of them again, but I can't seem to remember them.
When I worked long, boring hours, I would check out those massive CD audiobooks and load it on to my iPod. I listened to His Dark Materials and a bunch of Neil Gaiman one winter.

I have to admit I have never even been to the library before in this city. I should give it a try haha and look at their audiobooks section!

Also check to see if they have an Overdrive! I found out awhile ago that my network of libraries is also Overdrive-accessible, which you can also get audiobooks on, I believe.

I've read all three. Loved 11/22/63; enjoyed 1Q84 (it's very long and strange and, you know, like Murakami-ish); did not like The Goldfinch (it was so long; I think she could've benefitted from cutting it down by at least 25%).

Also, not sure if your city library does this, but mine offers audio books to check out via Hoopla.

Jess (jesmy777) Overdrive has audiobooks! You can check them out for 14 or 21 days and it keeps track of where you are in the book. It is a great service that's totally free. You can't rack up late fees with digital loans.

My only complaint with ours is that the check out and hold limits are low. 5 for check outs and 6 for holds. The holds can fill up fast when you wait months for some books.

For classics, try the librivox app. You can stream classics for free or buy certain titles. Some of the narrators are lousy though.

Cool! I looked up on the site and there's a library near me that like...allows you to do it I guess? it seems that i need to go get a library card there and then can I do the rest online from my house to check them out?

Yeah, that's how it works. You get a library card, and then you use the link connected to your library (usually found on the library's website) in order to access the database and check thinks out.

Also, not all the books you find on OverDrive might be available through your network of libraries. (I noticed that sometimes I can find books on the main website, but then they're not there when I use my library's link, which is what I need to check them out.)

How do you listen to them? Is it through an app or something? I assume it's not something you can put on your iPod if you have an old offline one like me because I can't imagine they can give you an MP3 if it's just a rental file.

Yup! You can either listen to them on a browser through OverDrive Listen or download a device-appropriate app and use that.

Ah thanks so much for this info :) I think I will try to get a library card after work. It looks like my catalogue has some nice audiobooks available right away and I'm really happy there is a way I can listen to things for free :) !!

message 69: by Lynda (new)

Lynda (summerroo) Thanks everyone for this nice discussion. I'll tell my husband to check out audiobooks at the library too. =)
