Third book!! All About Love: New Visions, by bell hooks

The introduction and opening chapter set up what looks to be an interesting topic. Yet again, here's a book I never would have picked up given the choice - Our Shared Shelf is expanding my horizons.
hooks' thoughts on the cynical nature of the production of books (men write about love; women read about love) got me to thinking that something needs to be done w/r/t artwork where there still appears to be a leaning towards making female authored books look more "flowery," for want of a better word. The online copy of hooks' book has two butterflies on the cover - who came up with that? And why should butterflies signify love? And is that two same-sex butterflies, or not? Somehow the imagery, in most books that I read, fails to convey the content of what it is I'm reading, and I only raise this point because for me, and I try very hard for this not to be the case, the look of a book plays an important role in my picking the book up in the first place - dodgy cover image = not picking it up.

Matthew, I can so relate to your thoughts on book covers. Not that I've ever been much interested in chick-lit, but I must acknowledge that a huge part of my lack of interest is due to the book covers in this genre. Pink, girlish, flowers, shopping...uh, no thanks. Pass me the hardcore stuff, I tend to say. The 'real' lit. It goes without saying that I also apply this logic to other genres and covers, but chick-lit is definitely high there in the list. As for this book in particular, hmmmm, didn't give it much thought. Not enamoured by the cover, but not reluctant towards it either.

Yes, I wondered the same thing about the edition of The Color Purple I purchased, from Orion Books and whose cover was designed by Edward Bettison. The designer's website actually says the author approved of the cover but this is an interesting question to investigate.

yesterday the price for the book was 12,09€ and today it's 20,84€...
do you think they raised the price because of this book club and our interest in this book?

that cover is actually very beautiful, an illustration that sends me visually to a field of cotton were I see them working, in the summer.

for sure they raised the prices because of the high requests

I'm looking forward to finish it, and try to change my perspective...

Definitely the same for me. But I have to wait at least one week, or at most four weeks until I can get it from my bookstore. So sad. But I will read it as fast as possible. I have to spread the knowledge of OSS more over here, in Salzburg, Austria.

Thanks for your answer, it was very kind of you. I´m glad this is a serious group where every comment gets it´s response. I know that it might be a challenge to find a book translated to every language so that everyone would fulfill their will. I have ordered my English copies and the Spanish version (they have not translated them to Basque) of "The color purple" on amazon as my local bookshops do not have any of the books in stock.
I´m sure that for the following months there is going to be more variety with authors from all countries as that is the symbol of feminism that it´s global!

Maybe you can use IVONA to change the text to audio... I use it for language learning, to hear new words and stuff like that. I hope it helps :)

No worries about any sort of time limit! The discussion will remain open past the end of the month. As you can see, discussion of The Color Purple is still going strong, and Emma only just posted her own discussion prompts a couple of days ago. It is our intention that, while a new book is chosen every month, the schedule is not considered strict and discussion thrives regardless of the month. Even My Life On The Road is still being actively discussed because of Emma's recent interview with Gloria Steinem! So don't worry about getting your book "late," because you don't have to miss out on discussion!

I think we (the group) are affecting book sales and availability with our rush to get the monthly selections :)

I just ordered mine from Amazon! It should be coming in the post in a few days. I can't wait to start reading it - it's been on my list for ages!

I love that we are, super cool isnt it? and that its selling out in so many places - anything that profits and advertises good authors is fab in my book.

This is the first book from Bell Hooks that I have read, so I'm looking forward to really getting into it.

You can read it online here: http://www.scribd.com/doc/124493278/b...

Can't wait to read the book!

I also read the reviews here on goodreads and I'm not impressed. Apparently it's very hetero-normative and full of binary thinking and assumptions about other people. Also less relatable to many due to Christian undertones.
