Kristie | 19137 comments Sorry, Saar. That’s one that I have no interest in at all. The cover puts me off completely. (I know, not the best way to judge a book!) I hope someone does read it with you though. It’s had great reviews.

message 202: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I was just about to say that it must be the cover putting people off! lol. It's a proper chunkster too.

message 203: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Oh, I would like to tackle this one day. But just not this year. I have to read her other book The People in the Trees this year though.

message 204: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Yes, the 700 pages put me off. Also it has a long waiting list in my library

message 205: by Tricia (new)

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 900 comments Saar, I have nothing planned yet for November except whatever the group read is that month. If you can wait until then, I'll read it with you.

message 206: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2649 comments I know, the cover is also not my thing, but I bought it months ago and read a couple of pages, but then stopped. It also has very different reviews. It's like you hate the book or you love it.
@Rusalka: I also need to read her other one too.
@Tricia: November would be great ☺

message 207: by Tricia (new)

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 900 comments OK, if your work on setting up the thread for it, I’ll work on finding a copy of the book. We can start around 1 November if you want.

message 208: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Saar wrote: "I was wondering if someone would want to read A Little Life somewhere this year?"

I have it on my wishlist, but I don't think I can fit it in this year.

message 209: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2649 comments Tricia wrote: "OK, if your work on setting up the thread for it, I’ll work on finding a copy of the book. We can start around 1 November if you want."

Okay, I'll look for a thread.

@Janice: no problem :) There are so many books to read!

message 210: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2649 comments Dear mods, can I have a thread for a BR for A Little Life, starting 1st November? Many thanks!

message 211: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Saar wrote: "Dear mods, can I have a thread for a BR for A Little Life, starting 1st November? Many thanks!"

You are more than welcome to create a thread for yourself if you have others who want to join you (I see you do). Janice will then add it to the calendar.

message 212: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2649 comments Will do :)

message 213: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2649 comments I don't know if anyone is interested, but I have Butcher's Crossing and Stoner on my TBR - pile. Is there any interest in reading it together?

message 214: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments Saar The Book owl wrote: "I don't know if anyone is interested, but I have Butcher's Crossing and Stoner on my TBR - pile. Is there any interest in reading it together?"

I don't want to reread it (read it last year) but I would recomend Stoner to everybody! It is a great story that, very surprisingly, sucks the reader right it.

message 215: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2649 comments Thanks, Margo, I've started reading it last year but got not far into it. So I want to read it again. I've heard so many good things about it.

Margo | 11628 comments Saar The Book owl wrote: "Thanks, Margo, I've started reading it last year but got not far into it. So I want to read it again. I've heard so many good things about it."

It is a bit of a slow burner but it is really worth sticking with it :-)

message 217: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Would anyone be interested in buddy reading The Labyrinth of the Spirits (Book #4 in the Cemetery of Forgotten Books)? There were buddy reads for all of the previous books in the series so I thought it might be nice to do one for this too. I was thinking of reading it early next year.

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Lisa wrote: "Would anyone be interested in buddy reading The Labyrinth of the Spirits (Book #4 in the Cemetery of Forgotten Books)? There were buddy reads for all of the previous books in the se..."

I would! I just bought the audiobook. Early 2019 suits me fine.

message 219: by Peggy (last edited Nov 18, 2018 12:40AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I just had a look, it's still a bit expensive here but I might join if the price drops. Or I might join anyway ;-) I probably will, who am I kidding?

And yikes! It's chunky! I had no idea.

Early 2019 is fine for me, but we have the Farseer buddy read starting mid-January which is a bit chunky too, so my preference would be towards the very end of January or even beginning of February.

message 220: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Great, Janice and Peggy! The end of January/early February is good for me. I will set up a thread for it but we can work out an actual start date nearer the time.

message 221: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2649 comments Maybe I join. I have all the parts, but still needs to read the other 3.

message 222: by Jannene (last edited Nov 18, 2018 10:53AM) (new)

Jannene | 3124 comments Janice, can you put A Drink Before the War on the calendar for January? I think the mystery group read wanted January.

Yes, please. I have been waiting to buy it.

message 225: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments I still haven’t read the first one! It’s been on my TBR forever.

message 226: by Cherie (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2649 comments Kristie wrote: "I still haven’t read the first one! It’s been on my TBR forever."

I have them all, but also never read the first one. There's an extra edition, like a travelguide for Barcelona, but with all the places named in the book where the story takes part. I have it too.

message 228: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments Earlier in the year we did a group read of The City & the City. A few of us said we might do a buddy read of another of his stories next year. Anyone up for it? We could get it into the calender.

message 229: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Ooh yes Margo. I would be in, depending on the book. I know some of you were talking about his New Crobuzon series. I've read the first but still need to finish off book 3 (I started but haven't finished). I was planning on reading The Last Days of New Paris for the "building on the cover" group read in January - it's a nice short one. Books I don't own by him but would love to read include Embassytown, Railsea, and King Rat, which are all standalones.

message 230: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I am interested too, Margo. I have PERDIDO STREET STATION in my shelf but I know Sarah read it already. My library doesn't hold THE LAS DAYS OF NEW PARIS, but EMBASSYTOWN and RAILSEA are available. I also might buy whatever we decide if not available through my library.

message 231: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I don't mind sitting out if you want to read Pedido - it's an amazing book. I think it's possibly the best, tied with The Scar. I'd still get involved with the discussion.

message 232: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I have Perdido Street Station and would be interested in a buddy read.

message 233: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I'm up for a buddy read. I have all most of his books besides the new one.

No, no because of me. I am up to read Perdido or anything else depending of people's interest.

message 235: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments Well how about if we do Perdido Street Station
and after a time Embassytown?

Sarah, would you recommend reading The Scar soon after Perdido or is it better to leave a break?

message 236: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Whilst The Scar is deemed book 2 in the New Crobuzon series, there is a new setting and characters. Same for book 3. So no need to read them close together.

message 237: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I think that is a good-for-everyone plan, Margo. Don't know what the rest think about it.

I haven't planned anything for 2019, so almost any time would work for me.

message 238: by Vicki (new)

Vicki | 1538 comments I also have a copy of Perdido Street Station so I can join that anytime. I'm also up for anything else by him too. Whenever works

message 239: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments Great Vicki! I will put a note on the The City & the City group read thread as well.

Looking at the calender, I think the first gap is mid/late february. Should we ask Janice to pencil Perdido Street Station in there? This is another chunkster - the audio is 29 hours!

@sarah, thanks for the info on New Crobuzon series. My library has parts 1 and 2 only. I just want to read everything this author has writen.

I'd be very interested in reading Perdido or anything else by Mieville.

If you set up the thread for it, I'll add a link to it in the calendar, and slate it for mid/late February.

That's great Suki!

@Janice, I'll set up the thread now. Thank you 😀

message 243: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I own Perido too and would be interested in joining a Feb group read.

message 244: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments I may join. I am not sure because next month has a lot of family birthdays, anniverseires and other fun time stealers

message 245: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments Hope you can join Renee and Cherie. The thtead is set up now. I'm really looking to it after reading The City & the City.

message 246: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments If anyone is interested in doing a buddy read of Becoming, I am starting today. I know it is last minute, but I have a link where our group can ask Michelle Obama questions, if we are doing a group read of her book. It also fits the monthly theme, so that's a bonus!

I finished reading her book last month and will pop in with comments if you do a buddy read.

Jannene | 3124 comments We have a buddy read for Patrick Kenzie and Angie Gennaro book 3 Sacred in March.

message 249: by Jannene (new)
