Stephan | 69 comments Hi,
I'm looking for buddies to read S. by Doug Dorst J. J. Abrams, also call S. Ship of Theseus.. Similar concept as in House of Leaves, with a different story. It's quite a thing and I'd like to be able to talk about it with buddies :) It's my first real paper book in ages after 100+ ebooks and I'm very much looking forward to it.
I hope I am right here and not annoying anybody with my request. This would actually be my first buddy read!
Cheers,
Stephan

message 102: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments I'll join your buddy read.

message 103: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I would also be interested in buddy reading S.. It's been sitting on my TBR pile for a couple of years now.

message 104: by Stephan (new)

Stephan | 69 comments That sounds great :)

So currently we have the three of us: Casceil, Lisa & me. Janice is going to check out the book and maybe join.

Because the book has tons of Marginalia I think we have to talk about them prior to starting. Lets start with one principle "keep it simple"! Also I don't want to solve every riddle because that can go very very deep, just have a great ride and discuss questions, thoughts and ideas with you!

I've had a look at how to read it and would suggest front to back, reading the margin notes along with the main story.

This is a spoiler free intro guide to how to read the book

I'd like to start rather sooner than later, but no hurries.

I agree, Stephan, I think it makes sense to read the margin notes alongside the main story. It will probably make the discussion side of things easier too.

As far as a start date goes, I would like to finish the book I am currently reading before starting this, so I probably won't be ready to start for another week or so. If the rest of you would rather start sooner than that, please go ahead and do so. I don't mind playing catch up :)

message 106: by Stephan (last edited Mar 29, 2017 07:50AM) (new)

Stephan | 69 comments Sure Lisa, finish that book in your time, next week is fine with me. I usually read 100 - 150 pages a day, I read slowly but continuously and I'd think S takes a little longer with inserts, margin notes and making sense of everything.

message 107: by Stephan (last edited Mar 28, 2017 05:33PM) (new)

Stephan | 69 comments I started a thread for those of us going to read S. in the buddy read forum here. I put a few links in it, if you, like Janice, are interested and want to know more.

message 108: by Jannene (new)

Jannene | 3124 comments Dom and I plan to read Nightshade Nightshade (Nightshade #1; Nightshade World #4) by Andrea Cremer next month for the "all about me" challenge since it has lillies on the cover. If anyone wants to join to make a buddy read let us know.

message 109: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I wondered if anyone fancied buddy reading Kafka on the Shore with me. I feel it's about time for another Murakami. I'm thinking June though as May is going to be a bit hectic for me potentially.

message 110: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I will say interested Sarah. Kafka was my first Murakami and my favorite. Although I think everyone's first one is their favorite. Been several years since I read it so might be interesting to read it again.

message 111: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments ok cool. I'll set up a thread later and see if we can get a few more people on board.

message 112: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments ... It throws out what I planned, but I could do that too. I was going to try and read something/one different for Japan. Next time, Gadget, next time.

message 113: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments That would be cool Rusalka.

message 114: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Lol you had me at the suggestion. I am so fickle.

message 115: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I will say that I am interested, Sarah. I have never read Murakami, but I want to. I think I even have a copy of this one waiting around. I may not be too active the first part of the month though. I am not sure when my sister and I will be back from our travel.

message 116: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments I may flit in and out. I have read the book, but would not mind revisiting in. I liked it a lot, and it is a good starting place for those who have not read any Murakami.

message 117: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Excellent. That's good to hear. The buddy read thread is set up now. The more the merrier!

message 118: by Annerlee (last edited Aug 27, 2017 02:30PM) (new)

Annerlee | 2871 comments I'm going to start on an epic journey to the Dark Tower and read Stephen King's Dark Tower series (The Dark Tower Series Collection: The Gunslinger, The Drawing of the Three, The Waste Lands, Wizard and Glass, Wolves of the Calla, Song of Susannah, The Dark Tower) plus the tie-ins and books that provide links and back story. I've read the series a few times, but this time I want to explore more of the connections in SK's other books.

I got the idea from Debra who kindly supplied a 'road map to the dark tower' . There's also as graphic version at
http://thetowerlibrary.proboards.com/...

road to the dark dark

Stephen King says of the series:
I have written enough novels and short stories to fill a solar system of the imagination, but Roland's story is my Jupiter--a planet that dwarfs all the others . . . a place of strange atmosphere, crazy landscape, and savage gravitational pull. Dwarfs the others, did I say? I think there's more to it than that, actually. I am coming to understand that Roland's world (or worlds) actually contains all the others of my making...

More details here: http://stephenking.com/darktower/conn...

I'm going to sit down and write out my itinery in the next couple of days with a view to starting mid September.

If anyone wants to come along for the whole ride, join in for some of the sections or read along with the dark tower novels, they're quite welcome! :-D

message 119: by Kristie, Moderator (last edited Aug 27, 2017 04:17PM) (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments I was considering a re-read, Annerlee! I recently finished the first book and watched the movie, which was quite different. I was just discussing some of the other book links. I'd join you for the ride. I'd like to listen to the audio this time around.

I probably won't read all the tie-ins though. I've read most of them already and, being a slower reader, it would take all my time. Can't wait to see your itinerary though.

message 120: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments I've never read any of the series. I may give it a try.

message 121: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments The gunslinger should be in the monthly read archives and there is a dark tower thread. Janice and I used one thread for all of books 2-7. Sarah held in for a book or two as well

message 122: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Oh we didn't do all the tie ins although both of us had read most of them prior. Salem's Lot has a huge tie in so I'd recommend that one definitely. I think it's Insomnia that has a large tie to the later books. I still have to read that one

message 123: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I did read some of the books with tie-ins when we did our buddy read of the series, but we didn't discuss them.

I want to do a reread some day, but that won't happen until possibly next year.

message 124: by Sarah (last edited Aug 29, 2017 12:35AM) (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I'm not going to reread those i've already read but i''ll join for the others if I can. I need to finish the series. I lost my way. Plus i have many of the others which link in that i've still to read.

message 125: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I'll keep an eye open there are still books that link that I haven't read either I may join in here and there if it works out

message 126: by Esther (last edited Aug 29, 2017 09:11AM) (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5191 comments Anyone wants to join me reading Sanderson's Oathbringer?
Tor is releasing a few chapters weekly on their page until it comes out in November.

I just read the Prologue. :)

message 127: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I still need to start the series Esther. I know there are a few people here that are up to date so I reckon you might find some company.

message 128: by Kristie, Moderator (last edited Aug 29, 2017 12:07PM) (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments Annerlee - You can use the current Dark Tower series buddy read thread for this buddy read. I will post something to show that we are revisiting the series, so that people know there may be spoilers if they go back beyond the post. You can post your itinerary there too, so people can refer to it.

Link to new start point.

edit: Here are some suggestions for reading order, if you don't have your plan yet. They are all a bit different (I wrote them out to compare and can send them to you if you want), but they all explain their reasoning. I'm sure there are a bunch more out there, but at least it's somewhere to start.

message 130: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I would like to read Dune. It's a chunkster. Wondering if anyone else wants to read it with me. For moral support. I have no plan for when. November or December perhaps. Any takers?

message 131: by Delitealex (new)

Delitealex | 336 comments Ive been wanting to read dune for a long time. Nov or dec sounds good.

message 132: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Cool. I'm thinking December might be better actually as I'll have time off work over Christmas and it means I can focus on completing my yearly challenge before then.

message 133: by Delitealex (new)

Delitealex | 336 comments I'd like to read The Alienist in maybe oct I've been wanting to read this for awhile and recently got a library card. I also want to read it before I watch the show.

message 136: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I believe 4 of us bought The Collapsing Empire the other day when it was offered as Audible's Daily Deal. Does anyone want to buddy read it in October? Or perhaps November?

message 137: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I'm game Janice. Whenever

message 138: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments I would be interested in November, Janice. I have too much going on in October already.

Maybe the 1st or the 15th?

message 142: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Delitealex and Saar, if you're a go-ahead on the buddy read for The Alienist, you're welcome to start up a thread for it. I will add it to the calendar and maybe you'll get some other readers.

I've read this book twice and really enjoyed it. I hope you do too.

message 143: by Delitealex (last edited Oct 29, 2017 06:11PM) (new)

message 145: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 1788 comments Almeta and I were talking on another thread about reading Infinite Jest, anyone else want to read with us?

I've never done a buddy read before, and I'm so excited! :)

message 146: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Rusalka mentioned having a buddy read in honour of Ursula K. Le Guin who died on Jan 22. I think it's a great idea.

Would others be interested in doing a buddy read of one of her books? I've never read anything of hers, but have wanted to for a long time.

Maybe a good place to start is with her Earthsea Cycle books, A Wizard of Earthsea?

I loved her A Wizard of Earthsea books when I was growing up. I'd love to join in a buddy read, time permitting. Not before March though.

message 148: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I'll do wizard of earthsea. I just saw a post from a guy yesterday saying he read most of her work and meh. But earthsea he rereads every few years

message 149: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I'm in also for Infinite Jest. I think. Lol. I haven't actually began a book yet in 2018 but maybe some buddy reads is what I need

message 150: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments The only one I have on my shelf is The Left Hand of Darkness. I would be willing to spend a credit on one of her books for a buddy read.

I read A Wizard of Earthsea as a kid too and I loved it :-)
