I finished to the end of Chapter 12. I'm not enjoying this section all that much. It's funny because when I was reading The Passage, I was bummed that the story jumped 100 years right after the crisis. Now, we've gone back to the immediate events after the crisis and I just want to be with Peter, Amy, and Alicia! There is just no satisfying some people.

(view spoiler)[ Grey seems to have shed the pedophilic tendencies with the vampire virus. It makes it a bit more understandable that the researchers would try to find a curative benefit to the strain. But still, I'm nervous. Presumably, Grey is going to meet up with Tim and then what?

I had to laugh at the scene in the bus when granny pulled out her gun. It's interesting how people react differently to fear. (hide spoiler)]

I felt a little like that too Janice. (view spoiler)[We got to know Peter, Alicia and Amy etc. and I really wanted to know how they were getting on. We have been reacquainted with Amy and Alicia briefly right at the start and now we have a whole host of new characters. But I am still enjoying reading about these. I guess we know that these new characters won't ever meet up with the ones we know and love because of the 100 year time difference. I'm wondering if Amy will bump in to them though at some point on her roamings?! (hide spoiler)]

Last few chapters of Part 2 (ch 21-22) (view spoiler)[This was quite a tense few chapters. Tim being sucked up by the crowd, Kitteridge forcing April on the bus and Danny driving off leaving them behind. The crush and chaos as Tim and Kitteridge try to escape. The MOAB bomb exploding and killing them all. And all the while Guilder escapes in a helicopter with Grey and Lila which subsequently goes down. I'm not surprised Grey gave Lila his blood in order to save her. But wasn't it too late?! What with Guilder whacking Grey over the back of the head. A bit of a cliffhanger there.

I was expecting us to find out that April was pregnant. That's just what she needs in an apocalypse! lol. Interestingly there are 12 survivors on the bus with April and Danny. IS this the 12 the book is named for or the twelve as in the 12 test subject/virals?!

I'm reading Part 3 The Fields at the moment and I've nearly finished that part. (view spoiler)[It's good to see what's going on in Texas. I know that from the last book Texas broke off away from the US and did things differently when the outbreak happened. And now we get to see how that worked out for them.

I don't fully understand what is happening. The men have gone on their usual run of what?!? hunting the virals?! but this time the women and children have gone with them on a picnic. This seems dangerous to me. Typical that an eclipse would happen on that very day. Sounds like a massacre at the moment. I'm wondering how this part will end.

I've read to the end of chapter 17. Grey & Lila - (view spoiler)[ I never realized it before, but they have a connection - Wolgast! What are the odds that they innocently connected at Home Depot? No wonder Guilder suspects that their meeting up is no accident.

I don't trust Guilder. This is weird to say, but he is creepier than Grey who's a pedophile and a familiar to Zero. (hide spoiler)]

I finished Part 3 (view spoiler)[I wasn't sure where this part was taking us. The massacre in the field was brutal. I was pleased that Voorhees was rescued by Tifty, I wonder if they'll reconcile. (hide spoiler)]

Literally just started Part 4 The Caves (view spoiler)[And we're back to Peter :-) And he happens o be at the Voorhees expeditionary camp and Tifty is there. So that was the point of Part 3. The two survivors joined the expeditionary forces together. Also we get to hear more about the massacre that Theo and Maus were killed in. Michael is ok, as is Hollis and baby Caleb. Unknown about Sara as no body found. I'm curious how that will pan out.

I was touched by Amy's dream of Wolgast. Interesting that he mentioned Carter would be a good one to reach out to as he is inherently good. (hide spoiler)]

I enjoy seeing more of what came after the attack and why Amy is not like the others. But if I am not mistaken, we still don't know why she was picked and not another child, besides the fact that she was abandoned by her mother.

I found an interview with Justin Cronin online last night and he was saying (view spoiler)[ that "the twelve" are not who we think. All along, we're led to think they would be the 12 remaining test subjects - Zero, Carter, etc. I had the same reaction as you when it commented that there were 12 on the bus who survived.

I never made the connection with Alicia's last name! She must be McKittritch's great great granddaughter. Interesting! (hide spoiler)]

More thoughts on Chapter 22 - (view spoiler)[ I was sad that McKittritch and Tim were killed by the bomb. I was hoping they would get out.

I doubt that Guilder killed Grey with the chunk of cement. I don't think that Lila's baby survived, but she's now a vampire. I was glad that she had some clarity before the helicopter crash.

And the wheels on the bus go round and round. I can't wait to hear how they make out. (hide spoiler)]

Re part 4 - the Cave (view spoiler)[ what I was interested in was the revelation that all of the guys that were assigned to watch, and feed the twelve test subjects had all been sexual deviates and all of them had been chipped too. It was pointing out that all of the test subjects in The Passage all have "familiars" who look human but can create "others" by giving them their blood. I do not think Guilder killed Grey either, but it seems likely that Grey saved Lila's life (but I am sure her baby died). I am interested in seeing who she becomes. Is she a vampire or like Grey? I'm with you on Grey Janice (view spoiler)[I don't think he can be that easily killed. Pretty sure they talk about "the sweet spot" where to shoot them. A bit of concrete over the back isn't going to cut it. And why would Guilder kill Grey anyway? He needs him alive. Grey is his answer to getting better from ALS. I think he did it to stop him turning Lila. (hide spoiler)]

So we can also now use this book for the Cave task too if we wanted as there is a whole section of the book dedicated to them. I can't decide yet which task I'm going to use it for.

Actually, I'm enjoying that section because I didn't like the 100 years jump in The Passage, it feels more real now... and I love Mrs Bellamy!
I just finished ch. 17 and I am enjoying this book more than the first so far, because there is more action in this one. In the Passage, I couldn't stand the long descriptions of the characters, their past and the camp.

It's interesting that you mention that, Ariane. I've started the next section "The Field", and I'm not caring for it. Looking back over The Passage and what I've read previously in The Twelve, it seems to take me a while to get accustomed to the time shift and learning new characters. Once I get to know people and what's happening, I become thoroughly invested in it. I really like Mrs Bellamy as well... and McKittritch, April, Tim.

The Field jumps about 70 years into the future and I'm kind of lost again.

Just finished part 4 The Cave (view spoiler)[So yes all the twelve original virals have familiars and it's looking increasingly likely that they were all the sweeps from the complex. We find Ignacio, one of the sweeps, in the cave where one of the twelve was. All of them are definitely chipped and part of the experiment it would seem. I'm curious about Amy's now. Was it Wolgast?

I'm curious about where the main dude went from the cave. Is he leaving them? Less food to go around? They seemed to be in a state of hybernation.

It was pretty intense in the cave. I sometimes think Alicia has a death wish. I know she has new superhuman powers but still. And Peter is stupid enough to rush in after her. And he's a mere mortal!

I'm worried for Amy. She seems to have had a funny turn and i can't think why. Is it a delayed onset bllod lust? I hope not. Is she going through puberty and getting her period like the sisters think? I don't think this is possible for her. Is she dying? Again, i hope not. (hide spoiler)]

And now on to part 5, The Oil Road (starting with chapter 29).

I feel pleased to have caught up with the old gang now. Things are slotting in to place. I'm really enjoying it.

I finished Chapter 28 and The Caves section. I had left off at Chapter 28 but decided to give it a quick read.

Alicia & Peter - (view spoiler)[ I feel bad for them because they love each other but can never be together. Is that because Alicia is now a new being? Funny, I want it more for Peter than I do for Alicia. I also felt bad for Peter in that he was "demoted" for the stint in the caves while Alicia was promoted to Captain. What does it mean for him? I always thought he'd be the leader in some way - the hero archetype - but now he's feeling so powerless and ineffectual. Yet, there's Alicia's cryptic farewell telling him that it will all work out. Amy - (view spoiler)[ I wonder, too, what the pain was. So, it's obvious now that Wolgast is a viral. Amy doesn't fit the mold like the other Twelve. She's not rooted to her home ground and she doesn't feed on blood. So, it's doubtful that Wolgast is her familiar. I guess we'll just have to wait to see how this pans out. (hide spoiler)]

I'm feeling a bit of a disconnect because of the jumps back and forward in time. I wish there was a family tree, or something so that I could place people and names easily. I suppose a family tree could be spoilerish.

I do not feel so disconnected now, as I did when I started reading before. I do not mind the time jumps, now that the time line is more established. It was much more confusing when things were jumping around back and forth to new characters.

I am reading another book that keeps doing the same thing going from the early 1990's and up to 2006 and back and forth practically every chapter, but there is a timeline bar at the top of each chapter.

I've finished to the end of Part IV - The Insurgent. The last chapter in that section is chapter 40.

Chapter 30 - religion and relationships (view spoiler)[ I've commented before that I thought the prologue sounded very biblical and that it felt like the events since Zero year were being deified. Yet, I was struck in this chapter that the Christian religion as evidenced by the sisters at the orphanage is still strong. It's just kind of interesting. I would think such catastrophic events over the hundred years would have reshaped religion, much like the prologue intimated.

So maybe it's not Peter and Alisha, but Peter and Amy. Why am I so invested in a relationship for him?. Maybe I'm personifying him for myself. LOL! But as he was climbing into the truck to go to the Oil Road, he was asked if there was someone waiting for him and he replied, "Sort of". Was he referring to Amy, Alisha, or maybe even Caleb? Chapter 34 - Greer. I don't really remember him all that much from The Passage. I suspect that this is a series I'll be rereading in it's entirety once I finish the third book. There's so much in it that I'm sure I've either glossed over, or missed. (view spoiler)[ In this section, Amy breaks him out of the stockade. She informs him that "each of us has one [a familiar]" So then I had to revisit the question as to whether or not Wolgast is her familiar. But then, Amy talks about Carter's Many, his viral line. She said, "...as he thinks, they think. As he dreams, they dream. "As I of you", said Lucius Greer. "As I of you." Is Lucius then, her familiar, or of her viral line? But how is it Amy has a familiar or a viral line? Has she bitten anyone? It's not apparent at this point that she has. She eats food just like everyone else.

And then there's Alisha who is a new being. Does she have a familiar? Or will she? I have so many questions. (hide spoiler)]

I'm going to break this into two posts because I'm afraid I'll lose something.

The Insurgent, Chapters 36-40: OMG! OMG! (view spoiler)[ Guilder that freaking psychopath! He's back and now we know what has happened to the taken. We also know what's happened to Grey and Lila.

Poor Grey. I feel bad for him. He's been locked up and being used for food by Guilder and Lila. She is really a poor lost creature. She only had a moment of clarity when she "died", and now she's back in her fantasy world. I was wondering who the woman was who appeared to the children in the Field, and to Peter's convoy on the Oil Road. And now we know. This really saddened me.

We also know that sexual activity isn't possible. So that bodes the question - what about Alisha and Amy (and hence my fixation on Peter's love interest)? Are they also as affected by the virus?

And Sara. We've found her, but in such dire circumstances. I remember that she was pregnant, but did she miscarry? If so, when? She mentions that she regrets not telling Hollis about their daughter.

Some thoughts about familiars... Does the drac care about his familiar? Or are they capable of just discarding them as inconsequential at whim? Ignatius was crying because his master left him in the cave. Grey is locked in a cell while Guilder runs his own empire. Will Zero not champion Grey? I suspect not, since Guilder is now hearing Zero's voice. Even Bram Stoker's Dracula (the handbook for all things vampire according to Alisha) discarded Renfrew so casually. I'd really like to understand the hierarchy a little better. I suppose that shall also be revealed in time.

I did read a couple chapters before I fell asleep. 28-30. I thought Peter's conversation with Greer was interesting and confusing. I agree with you, Janice about the religious aspects. Some I do not get. I had to quickly close your spoiler as I realized that I was not there yet. I will not tell Jmom on you, but I am going to leave this one and pick up on another, lighter story for the toppler.

Chapter 45, Sara - (view spoiler)[ OMG she's brave to join the insurrection! As Lila's attendant, she is also to care for "Lila's child" who turns out to be Sara & Hollis' daughter Kate. So, when did Sara give birth? I'm a little confused here. She was pregnant when she was taken up, and hadn't told Hollis. So she must have given birth while at the city and told the baby died? Yet, she told the doctor when she was first taken that she'd never been pregnant all the while thinking about this child she'd lost. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 46, Amy's powers - (view spoiler)[ Remember in the field when Lila said to Peter, "You're tired"? Nothing happened. Peter did not succumb in any way to her. Yet, Amy said it to Greer in this chapter and he immediately fell asleep. I think I read something somewhere that said we'd understand more of Amy's powers in the third book. I'm wondering if it's her original power, or if it's a vampire trait - mind control. Lila is pretty flawed, and she's not a direct viral (rather indirect through Grey), so that could explain why she's not as effective. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 48, Wolgast - (view spoiler)[ We now know that he is not Amy's familiar. He is Carter's. That makes sense, actually. I remember back to the first book. He made a connection with Carter and was sympathetic to his plight, recognizing that he didn't kill Rachel, that he loved her and was trying to rescue her. (hide spoiler)]

Section "The Changeling", Chapters 49 - 54: (view spoiler)[ I'm a little confused about how Amy changed into a woman and why. Maybe all that will be explained in the final book. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 61, Alicia - (view spoiler)[ I don't know why I am so fixated on who is Amy's familiar, but I know think it must be Alicia. That makes more sense than anyone else. The viral antidote that she had been given back in Book One was a derivative of Amy's blood. (hide spoiler)]

The ending - (view spoiler)[ Back to Alicia. I was really sad that she decided to end her life like that, but something happened and she didn't die. Now she's hearing Zero speak to her and he wants her to be his One. She has a new agenda now and is off to kill him. I can't wait for the end of the trilogy to find out how it all wraps up.

Amy is in some kind of existence, not sure exactly what since she seems to be in the same spirit world as Rachel, Carter and Wolgast who are all dead. At the very end, Wolgast asks if she's in love and she says, "yes", and that he loves her too. Peter? It has to be. Back to obsessing about who Peter is in love with. LOL!

Oh, and Lila. I was so glad that she found clarity in the end and realized what her delusions had cost in terms of innocent people and children, and that she took steps to "atone". I'm glad too that Grey was finally released, even if it was by death.

I kind of liked that some of the lost were found - Sara, Kate, Nina, and Jenny (Apgar's daughter). (hide spoiler)]

We'll have to buddy read the final book in the trilogy. I want to read it fairly soon after it's released - June? It may take a while for people to get it from the library though.

I write reviews for every book I read through there, some are better than others. Some I just give a short impression while others will be much fuller. They talk about the kiss they shared. I wonder whether that was what firmed up the familiar role?! Still curious at what is wrong with Amy.

I am curious about Greer's visitors and what it all means. I could have shouted at Peter for not asking about his first visitor. And he didn't ask after Amy. Does he have some connection with her (and others) like Lacey did? There is definitely a God theme throughout this series. People seem to know things they couldn't possibly. For example, Caleb said Peter looked like Theo but Theo died when he was a baby.

Michael seems to have changed a lot. He's come out of his shell. I'm pleased for him.

Re your msg 72 questions Janice for Part 5, The Oil Road (view spoiler)[I was curious about Peter's reply to the guy about him having someone back home. I think that's why i thought perhaps Peter was Amy's familiar.

But now we know Greer is. That's what i got from the conversation when Amy broke Greer out. Amy hasn't bitten anyone. I wonder whether it's more a mind thing than a biting thing. I also have wondered if a kiss would do it. Thinking back to Grey and Zero in the prison. Zero got in Grey's mind and that's how he was able to escape. That was way before Grey had been bitten. I now think Wolgast and Peter are part of Amy's Many. I'm also guessing respect/love of some kind is required for a bond between master and familiar. Carter doesn't have one, not a real one, the woman he once loved who killed herself is his familiar, and she's within.

As for Alicia, I think she is the new Twelth member of The Twelve after Babcock was killed. At the end of this section, Zero states the Twelve are complete again with a newly made person, a female. Alicia or Amy or someone else?

The ambush of Peter and Michael was full on. I'm guessing another colony of people working with/for virals. Does that mean another member of the Twelve is near?!

I'm interested why Martinez sacrificed his familiar and made his Many face the sun and die. Is it because there isn't enough food to go around. Is it because he was psychotic as a human and is equally psychotic as a viral? Are other members of the Twelve doing the same? (hide spoiler)]

Moving on to Part 6, The Insurgent now.

Part 6 The Insurgent is done. That was one hell of a part(view spoiler)[Sara is alive. But up shit creek. Another colony using/helping virals. Very much like a concentration work camp i thought. It's the structure that the Major was asking Greer about. What is this stadium like structure they're building? Those working on it can't speak of it and are searched after they've been on site.

It seems that Sara's daughter died. She remembers the blood so i guess she died in childbirth. The nurse gave her a locket of hair though. Which makes me think perhaps the baby was older?! I'm not sure. I am concerned that it didn't die and instead went to Lila. There is a brief mention of Lila having a thing about babies. Not sure whether she likes them alive to care for because she lost her own or whether she likes eating them.

I was disappointed too Janice to find out Lila was the woman who led the ambush at the oil road. I hadn't even thought about the woman in the fields until you mentioned it. That's so wrong. But she is still clearly messed up. Her and Guilder are a good match. He's a monstrosity. I knew Grey would still be alive but perhaps it would have been better if he'd died. Poor guy being kept locked away as food. Interesting he has Mr Wilkes from the refuge camp and The doctor Grey bit from the base on staff.

When Lila ambushed Peter's group, she repeated "you are feeling tired" a couple times. She seem confused. I think she was trying to make him sleep like Amy does to people but it didn't work on him. I guess it's because he is one of Amy's Many?!

I guess sex is no longer important. We have sex to continue our species at a basic level and they only have to bite/transfer blood to do that so i guess they can discard that act. Although humans are one of few animals which also have sex for fun. So fair enough they don't need to do it to procreate but they might have still done it to have fun. But i don't really want to think about two virals having sex. Or one viral and one human. The vampires in this series are not like those in the Sookie Stackhouse series.

I was surprised Jackie was part of the insurgency. And that she blew herself up but she was ill and I'm guessing a better way to go than being torn apart by virals. I wonder how Sara will be involved with the insurgency. (hide spoiler)]

Virals have a finite number of "creations". Once the human population was decimated, there would be no further propagation. That was what was happening and why these colonies were created, well the first one anyway. I don't think Guilder's was created to specifically feed virals, although that was a part of it. I read mine on iBooks and what bugged me is that when I highlighted or made a note, it didn't tell me what chapter it was on. Sometimes it would be mid-chapter and some of the chapters were long, so I was paging through trying to get to the next chapter so I could figure out where my note was.

I hadn't read the synopsis of this book before starting so i wasn't sure what was going to happen. I've just read it now. I'm guessing things are going to kick off pretty soon! I worked out i have about 200 pages left.

Back to this one tonight!

On my Nook ebook, there are 676 pages. Chapter 31 is on page 325. I just added a book mark to see if I could get a percentage, and it does not show. The bookmark shows Chapter and page number. When I read books on the Overdrive app, I get percentages, but not actual page numbers most of the time. My local library just added a 3M Cloud app for their ebooks. I requested my first book, but have not loaded it yet. I have to download the app onto my Nook tablet. If I download a book from an internet website, I have to use an app called Play Books, which is a Google app, to read them. Oh, and I also have the Kindle app on my tablet. Some days, it is just easier to request a dead tree book from the library or buy a hard copy.
