I finished my book, Nest and discussed it in the general thread. It touched upon several deep topics for a middle school book - child abuse, mental health, parental illness, and more that I can't mention without giving away spoilers. I thought the author did a great job of having the various children in the book act and think like kids do. I liked the kids even when they were acting bratty. Overall, a good book. I gave it four stars. Title:

Some interesting background: Tove Jannson wrote this book following the death of her summer in 1972. The Grandmother in "The Summer Book" is based on Tove's mother. The book is largely a tribute to her mother and a place for Tove's bereft inner child to seek the comfort of her "grandmother's" company.

Oooh KimeyDiann, I'm so sorry but I have to be a super meanie...You could have the 1 point for rain as a verb, but not the 4 points for European author if you don't know it for a fact. Kate Morton is Australian I believe but her books are also set in England so that's not valid reasoning.
But all this doesn't matter... I took over the standard challenge rules which say that a book must be at least 175 pages and yours is shorter. So sorry :(

I wondered about the pages, but since I didn't see it mentioned in the first post I thought it would be okay. I actually didn't realize it was that short until I looked up the page numbers on GR just a few minutes ago. Oh well, it is all good, and the month isn't over yet! :)
And why on earth does an author have zero information in the book or online about themselves? The only thing I have been able to find is that he is a fan of the horror genre. lol.
It's in the first post of the other thread but not in this one. I had to have a look myself to see if there was a page rule.And yes, that's weird. If I had written a book and was read on GR I would write a bit about myself!

The word that I was given was parade and my associated word was Savannah as I immediately thought of Savannah’s extra-ordinary St. Patrick’s Day Parade that my family had the opportunity to see a few years ago. I read Savannah Blues
. This was the first book that I have read by Mary Kay Andrews and wasn’t sure what to expect. While I wasn’t blown away by the writing style, the characters, or the story line, it was a fun and light read, suitable for a road trip. There were a couple of laugh out loud moments (always a bonus) but the best part of the novel was the atmosphere and setting which received a great deal of attention. I loved the references to specific places in Savannah that I have visited and the description of Southern customs and cuisine.I have calculated my score as 15 points.

I am so glad I picked this book to read. It was a beautifully written gem of a book. The author's use of words to masterfully paint a picture was incredible. I liked it so much I had to purchase a copy (as well as another book he wrote) so I can enjoy it again.
