SOLVED. WW2 book about a guy joining the army. [s]

I have read this book a few years back and could not remember the name of the book and has been bothering me for a while.
*Contains Spoilers*
Genre: Adventure, Romance
A quick summary of the book was how a boy when he turned 18 went and signed up to join the fight. I think he was Canadian not entirely sure. He had signed up without his dads permission to go fight in the war. He was sent to a training center were he had trained for a couple weeks before being deployed to Britain to fight. He meets this nurse after being injured who he soon falls in love with and she gets killed later on when a bomb is dropped on the hospital she was working at. He gets switched to the Cavalry where his horse gets shot and he ends up putting it down and shoots a kid when the kid was trying to offer him chocolate. He survives the war and ends up coming back home. I know this is not the best description but this was the best and main parts i could remember. Please help. Thanks!

Are you still looking for this book? I'm pretty sure it's Megiddo's Shadow by Arthur Slade. I remember the chocolate scene vividly because of how much it devastated me.
