“Palestine belongs to the Arabs in the same sense that
England belongs to the English or France to the French.
It is wrong and in-human to impose the Jews on the Arabs.”
Mahatma Gandhi

The Preacher looked out from the stage, there were more people, maybe 75, maybe a 100, he couldn't really tell. He knew Barry had been excited about the gate or whatever it was he called it. It meant little to him; simply that the message was being heard.

"I support no religion, I deny all faiths and reject all dogmas." He waited a few moments, "But I have been thinking of this war on terror and I cannot escape the conclusion that it is a real war, but not in the way that it has been sold to us." He turned and strode off to his right, "We have been sold the story of the evil Islamist attack, a satanical attack on America and western culture and we bought into the story because that's exactly what it is, a Hollywood story from beginning to end, a Spielberg extravaganza."

He ignored the rippled gasp that greeted his pronouncement and turned rapidly to his left, "Imagine the scene, evil, bearded, dark skinned Muslim tyrants, sitting around their camp fires, their demonic faces flickering in the firelight, plotting the downfall of the free world. Set against that you have the carefree, innocent, blond blue-eyed American family enjoying life in the California sun listening happily to the sounds of the latest 15 year old pop megastar."

He paced around the stage, "For years Hollywood has prepared us for the coming war on Islam, we've had a never ending diet of films based on Islamic terrorists attacking the heart of America. Then we have the real event; the horrific tragedy of 9/11. Which is followed a few years later by other attacks in Europe and here in the UK, culminating in the recent Wembley attack," he rubbed his chin as he walked, "but what if we re-examined that script? What if we looked more closely at the details? What if we were to peek behind the curtain? What if this were all just a conjuring trick?"

He stopped and stared out at the audience, he could see wide eyes and some opened mouths, "What if we ponder the way things were before 9/11 and examine the lives of those in the Middle East? What if we looked back at where things began, examined the facts more closely?"

"You don't know what you're talking about," shouted someone from the back. Barry was fidgeting; this was not going well.

The Preacher raised his hand in either negation or acknowledgment. "Who has heard of the Balfour Declaration?"

No-one responded.

"OK, context: in 1917 WWI was at its height, the French army had mutinied and was on the defensive, the first Russian revolution had erupted in March of that year, the Eastern front was closing down. If the dreaded Lenin took power the Bolsheviks would sue for peace and Germany would be free to transfer over one million troops from the Eastern front, to the Western front. The only allied army still able to fight was Britain's but, even at over a million men strong, it was tiny compared to that of the Reich."
Barry breathed again; they were off the contentious topic of 9/11 and a Spielberg extravaganza.

"Two things happened. First, Lenin and the Bolsheviks came to power and sued for peace. Secondly, the British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour sent a letter to the international banker Baron Rothschild agreeing to establish a home for the Jews in Palestine."

He paused and looked around him, waiting for it to sink in, not wanting to go further until he saw a few lights dawning. He raised his palms and hunched his shoulders, "It was a quid pro quo arrangement; in return for Palestine the global Jewish community would replenish bare coffers, use political influence to speed American troops across the Atlantic, throw its combined weight behind the allies to crush Germany."

A few people were shaking their heads, a few others showing various expressions of surprise.

"Think about it. What if the US Foreign Secretary signed a letter giving SE England to France for their support in the UN. How do you think we would take that? How would you feel if your country was given away to another community by another people living thousands of miles away? No! Let's be specific here, if you were a Muslim and a couple of Christians signed away your Holy Land to the Jews, how would you feel?"

The hall was silent.

"A few years earlier Palestine had belonged to the Ottoman Turks. It was a Muslim country. The Arabs helped Lawrence of Arabia defeat the Turks and what was their reward? The creation of a Jewish homeland in Palestine? Really? At first it wasn't a huge problem, settlers came but not in great numbers, going into kibbutz and small settlements. It all changed after WWII and the holocaust when everyone seemed to accept Jewish people's right to come from all over the world and converge on Palestine, thus turning the indigenous population into an oppressed minority group." He paused, peering out, trying to penetrate the back rows. "The theft of Palestine and subsequent creation of Israel has lead directly through the decades to our current war on terror."

There were several murmurings of what Barry hoped were agreement.

"I'm not saying that I back the Muslims over the Jews and I'm not saying that the holocaust wasn't dreadful, I'm saying if someone gave my country away to a third party then I'd have to fight to get it back." He waited for his words to travel around the hall, "I'd fight them on the beaches, I'd fight them in the fields and I'd fight them in the hills and I'd never surrender."

Nods of encouragement now; smatterings of applause, scattered but not isolated, he'd succeeded with some of them where Barry would have thought that was impossible.

"We are told that here in the west we are the victims of Islamic Jihadists' terror, and it is true, there have been atrocities on our streets. But do we live in daily terror? Do we face death from the skies without warning?" He raised a finger to the ceiling, "Delivered like a thunderbolt by a drone activated from miles away or as a deadly spray of cannon rounds from an Apache helicopter?"

"What about 9/11?" shouted someone from the back of the hall. He was shushed immediately by people from various sections of the auditorium.

"We support Arab royalty, selling them weapons with which to control their people and in return they allowed us to steal the Arab people's national wealth, the only thing they have, their oil," responded the Preacher quickly, "Think how much money has been poured into the Middle East. Where did it all go? If you look at Iraq, Iran and Saudi Arabia the ordinary people live in poverty whilst the elites live in extreme opulence. Mercedes made of silver."

He bent over the front of the stage to address those who were scattered in the front row, "That's how it works, firstly we buy off the ruling classes with great wealth and then we help them suppress their revolutionaries, the men and women who would fight for the rights of the people. These people we call anarchists, terrorists, communists or religious fundamentalists."

He rose up and bounced across the stage, energised by the feedback, "Why is it that we allow obscenely rich Arab leaders to be portrayed as victims? Why do we allow ourselves to be persuaded that the people fighting for equal distribution of oil wealth are the villains? Simple, because if the people of the Arab countries get control of the oil they will want to charge more for it so they can improve the wellbeing of the nation and the oil magnates can't allow that."

"If it keeps the price of oil down then it's a good thing," called someone from the side.

"I'm not arguing against it. I'm simply saying we should admit to what we are doing. Be clear why we're out there and why we're killing thousands and thousands of innocent human beings."

"Bloody commie!" shouted a man in the front row.

"Perhaps we allow the powers that be to sell us the lie because we recognise that the Arabs are sat on top of the world's most crucial supplies. Is that why we don't question the horrors that have been unleashed on the millions of civilians? Is the truth rather that we are the ones waging war? Are we the evil under the sun? Are we the evil empire attacking the free peoples of the world? Are we the true villains in this Hollywood movie? Are we the real terrorists and have we allowed ourselves to be deceived simply because of our own greed?"
With that he spun through 180 degrees and left the stage.

Nik Krasno Too bad no one rose from the auditorium to argue with the Preacher-:)
With all respect to Mahatma and I certainly have some, I somehow doubt his competence on Jewish Arab relations. I could only wish all those who blow, stab, shoot innocent Israeli citizens adopted his non-violent resistance approach.

As of Balfour declaration, I'm aware that it's attributed long lasting consequences, it was never implemented by the Brits. Instead Israel gained independence more than 30 years later after an independence war. If Rothschild spent a lot of money on this letter, I'm not sure 30 years long return of investment is a good business -:)

If you look at the history, there were no such state as Palestine and it was conquered and occupied by different empires or armies: Romans, Muslims, crusaders, Turks, etc. and if you look for indigenous people then Jews were always there from biblical to modern times.
As of Ottoman Empire: Turks are Muslims but not Arabs, while in Israel live both Muslim and Christian Arabs. Confusing, I know.
Israel was recognized by most major states incl. US and USSR soon after Declaration of Independence in 1948.

It should be mentioned that Arabs refused the UN approved plan and their own state, envisaged thereby, and instead attacked Israel and did so again and again in a relatively short history.
9/11 events have no connection to Israeli - Palestinian conflict.

The so called 'occupied' territories were never annexed by Israel. Moreover, Israel supports and attempts to reach a 2 state solution.
It was Israeli leadership who brought yasser Arafat from his terrorist hideout and offered to return and to negotiate the deal, which he spurned eventually. It was Israeli prime minister Sharon who withdrew the army and settlements completely and unilaterally from Gaza, from where Israel received salvos of rockets every now and then.

And Israel is still for the solution for all I know, if Palestinians had a leader to negotiate with..

James Morcan | 11380 comments And further to Nik's comments, I want to add that Israel gets 10,000 rockets fired into her borders every year.
How many nations under those conditions would continue peace talks??
And another thing, Israel is only 75% Jewish the rest of the population are mostly the increasing Arab/Muslim citizens of Israel.
So it's a mistake in my view to confuse Judaism or the Jewish people with Israel and imply they are the exact same thing just as it'd be a mistake to say America is a purely white/Christian nation. (Nik correct me if you think otherwise!)

And how many Israelis die? Britain was bombed by the IRA for years yet we never sent the bombers over Dublin.

The other thing to remember is Israel is an artificial concept - a land stolen from another indigenous population - like America - like Australia - like New Zealand - like Canada - like the Caribbean etc.

Seriously - how many Israelis do you think die every year at the hands of the indigenous population? How many Palestinians are killed? approx. 2,500 died and over 10,000 were injured in 2014 for zero Israeli civilian loses. None of the Palestinian small ineffective rockets actually hit a target, the Palestinians don't have an army, a navy, an air force or nuclear weapons nor phosphorous they just have stones and knives and their own bodies to sacrifice. Who would live in Gaza - a giant prison cut off from the rest of the world and who wouldn't fight for their freedom, for the return of their own land - your arguments are false and weak - they do not recognise the true situation - rather they side with Israel - why?

message 6: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno Arun, that's some kind of perverted logic you offer. Each year from dozens to hundreds of Israelis die at hands of Palestinian terrorists. Would you be happier if more Israelis died? Innocent people deliberately targeted by terrorists? Thanks god, Israel developed some sophisticated defense systems that once commissioned provide reasonable, but unfortunately not 100% defense to civil population. You say Palestinians don't have weapons? Clearly, Israel has a definitive military edge over palestinians, but I ask you why if you are not a boxer would you mess with mike Tyson and then complain that he kicked your ass? It's the same here. They fire rockets, Israel retaliates. Don't do that, nobody dies. Rather simple, no? Just compare your punch with that of mike Tyson. Death of each soldier or civilian in Israel is a tragedy, believe me. Israel traded thousands of convicted terrorists with blood on their hands for just 1 captive soldier - Gilad Shalit.
How do you think conflagrations happen? Israel attacks poor Palestinians? Invades their lands? Come on now. Only when Israel is forced to retaliate to increased attacks she does. Israel can capture Gaza and eradicate Hamas any given moment, but Israel doesn't do it inter Alia to avoid massive casualties among its own soldiers and Palestinian population.
And Gaza is no jail, totally controlled by Palestinians. Israel tries to blockade military supplies, but with Gaza-Egypt border opened at will sometimes, it doesn't really help.
And to add my personal attitude, I sincerely believe that most of Palestinian population are normal peaceful people who likewise reject terrorist assaults performed by their extremists, targeting of unengaged innocent people and rocket salvos.

And Israel is a legitimate state widely recognized by every other states, except for Arab league.

message 7: by Arun (new)

Arun Ellis | 10 comments Hi Nik - nice to meet you by the way - but back to your observations, I'll try to deal with them one by one - seems easiest - re hundreds of Israelis dying at the hands of the Palestinians each year - that's a really interesting stat - I'd love to see it actually written down somewhere - I think you'll find it's inaccurate - very few Israelis die each year, however hundreds of Palestinians die in a normal year but if it happens to be a year when Israel decides to teach them a lesson then thousands die - I do believe that you will find stats to support this if you look for them.

Now to this amazing defence system that the Israelis have perfected - they didn't - it was sold to them by American politicians in the pocket of the Zionist bankers.

Now you draw a rather strange analogy - if I may put it in the right context - it's like you're a 9 stone weakling living in your own home but a man called Ata Turk has barged in and forces his will on you. Then one day Hulk Hogan turns up and offers to get rid of Ata Turk if you help him and in return Hogan says you can live in your own home freely so you rise up and help him expel Ata Turk. Then Hulk Hogan suddenly says well actually I'm giving control of your home to Mike Tyson. Mike Tyson then moves in with his wife and family, his brothers and sisters, her brothers and sisters, their parents, their cousins, their distant relatives in fact anyone who can claim a vague link to Mike. Mike then tells you to go live in the outhouse with your family and to stay there. You refuse and you try to fight back then Mike goes to his friend King Kong and persuades him to give away some of his biggest and best weapons to go beat the hell out of you - the end.

You ask how the conflagrations happen. Simple. The Palestinians are fighting for their own land, for their freedom for their ancestors and for their children; they are in fact freedom fighters like any oppressed peoples of the world, that's how this particular conflagration happens.

Your point that Israel could easily crush the Palestinians if she wanted to sounds a bit odd, most strong countries could destroy another weaker country or civilization but it's not what we're meant to be doing in the 21st Century, that's a bit imperialist so I'm surprised you would put it forward as an argument.

Just to enlighten you a little bit - the so called tunnels don't exist to attack Israel - they exist to smuggle food into Gaza - I'm not saying that Palestinian freedom fighters haven't used the odd tunnel in the past but I challenge you to find one successful attack on Israel using said tunnels.

Re the Palestinians being normal peaceful people, well, they've lived under a military dictatorship for a great many years now so I doubt that many of them are peace loving in the normal sense of the word, in fact I fear that by now they are probably all sworn to fight to the death to free their lands, their homes and their families and finally you say Israel is a legitimate state recognised by everyone - I'm sorry but that's just a question of power - today Israel is recognised because she controls the world bank under Paul Wolfowitz who again has dual citizenship - but tomorrow - who knows.

Incidentally, have you heard of the Project for a new American Century cofounded by Donald Kagan and Robert Kagan both with dual citizenship? Have you heard of the Oded Yinon Plan and do you know its objectives? Did you know that certain key individuals in the Bush administration had dual citizenship and had links to both plans? I could go on....

message 8: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno Hi Arun - nice to meet you too - there is nothing better than a good debate (and I hope you don't resort to violence at the end, like some of the Palestinians-:)). Thanks for your elaborate answer and let me refer to your points.

Re: Israeli victims.
There is no problem to find relevant stats. I'm giving you on purpose both sample info from Al Jazeera and Israeli foreign ministry:
http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/inte...
And I want to stress that Al Jazeera is shy to mention that those Palestinians were killed while trying to kill or killing Jews
http://www.mfa.gov.il/mfa/foreignpoli...
If you divide 1300 by 15 years you'll have an average of 86 people killed annually. And if you think I'm going to be ashamed, that Israel succeeds to thwart most/some of the attacks - I'm not.
If you cared to check 'each lesson that Israel taught', you'd find out that Israel is very, very, too reluctant to ever start anything major. Only when she doesn't have a choice because of intolerable amount of rockets, attacks, etc. And you know what, these lessons help. Hamas and other similar organizations have good learning skills. After each of such lessons, instead of thousands of rockets fired into Israeli territories, Israel has almost none....

Re: Iron dome.
Mate, it so easy to check these things. Please, do, before you share your belief. It's not fiction now. You are trying to operate with facts, no? Iron dome is an Israeli unique (no analogues worldwide) development:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Dome
Yes, the US participated in its financing, but so what? US for years provides military aid to Egypt, for example, pretty much on par with that received by Israel.

Re: Ata Turk, Hogan, Tyson and others.
Arun, I tried to follow and you made it in the rather funny way, although I failed to trace all the metaphors of who stands for whom. Well done, anyway!
The situ though is much simpler than you describe. The Jews had lived in Israel after the dinosaurs or since the creation of the world (check the Bible), depending whether you take secular or religious approach. And they continued to live through the centuries till nowadays. Were they always the majority? No, but Israel is Jewish historic motherland, no doubt about that. At some stage, when at 6-7 century A.C. Islam appeared? and the same territory was also populated by Muslims and also by Christians. The UN offered a separation plan (a two state solution), whereby Jews had their state and Palestinians theirs. Jews agreed, Palestinians didn't and attacked the Jews and did it repeatedly many times over. Now, there are two Palestinian territories - the West Bank, controlled by Abu Mazen and his party and Gaza controlled by Hamas. In the West bank not all of the territories were transferred to Palestinian control. Gaza is completely vacated from settlements and any Israeli presence! Israel is ready any given moment to transfer the entire territory (97-98%) to Palestinians and compensate for remaining 2-3% from its land in return for rather simple things - recognition of Israel, giving up on violence, etc. Nothing complicated. But it seems neither Arafat nor Abu Mazen are apt to pick up the gauntlet. Take Egypt example. At some stage during one of the many wars Israel captured the entire Sinai peninsula, which is 3 times bigger than Israel. Wasn't it a strategic asset? Israel returned it in its entirety to Egypt on its own will in return for peaceful relations only. And Israel does have not too warm, but fair relations with Muslim Egypt ever since. And many Israelis travel there to have a cheap joint every now and then -:) Come to make peace like Anwar Sadat did, and I'm sure there is a good chance to finish it.

Re: conflagrations.
You can call terrorists whatever you like, but I'll tell you my attitude: no reason in the world justifies attacking and killing innocent people. That's what terrorists do, they attack kids, women, soldiers, elders alike, they don't care who to kill, as long as he/she is Jewish. Israel doesn't ever target civilians, while terrorists do and primarily so. They want their state? Fine! Israel is dedicated to 2 state solution and is willing to facilitate Palestinian state. Come sign a peace treaty though? Is it too much to ask? And from my personal angle: if anyone tries to stab you and you happen to have a gun on you, don't throw it away because your weapon is more advanced than the knife, use it to protect yourself. I would.

Re: Israeli military edge.
If you think I should feel inferior, ashamed or whatever because Israel has a military edge, I'm not and I'm rather proud of it. I think any government is obliged to do its utmost to protect its citizens the best way possible.

Re: tunnels.
Arun, dear, thanks for the challenge. I didn't have to look hard to rise to it -:):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palesti....
I'm sure Al Jazeera mentions their existence too.

Re: Palestinians.
I don't know whether you know, but a lot of Palestinians work in Israel. I know some of them. And they are good people, working hard to finance their families and live normal life.
http://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/bu...
Very few of them but still few thousands prefer terrorism, but I hope Israel has adequate means to protect herself.
Is there anything wrong with dual citizenship that I missed?

Re: miscellaneous.
No, I didn't know, but I looked up one of them - Donald on the web:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_...
Dean, professor. So?

Thanks for the books

James Morcan | 11380 comments Further to Nik's points (ALL of which are facts according to my independent and unbiased research as a non-Israeli and non-Arab and non-Jew):
The uncomfortable fact is if Israel ever dropped her guard, the entire population would be wiped out in about half a day!!! Remember when almost every Arab nation attacked Israel in the Six Day War??
I think anti-Semitism needs to be mentioned here as well as despite some Palestinians trying to claim their enemy is Zionism it's obviously much more than that ...On the global scale of racial/religious/cultural animosity, the level of hatred for Jews in the Middle East is OFF THE SCALE!!!!!!
