Kristel (kristelh) | 699 comments I am not finding a way to search books that have been tagged with a certain shelf name. I am going to vote but it sure isn't as easy as it used to be to figure out which tag would be the best one for that month.

I will just vote.

Here is one post I made about finding books on shelves. You might want to look at posts before and after this for more discussion.

I am pretty thick in the head but it seems like you have to have a book in mind and then you can check to see if it has been shelved by that particular shelf but if you don't have any idea of what books you own that might fit that tag, how would you search then?

message 18: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8434 comments At the top of the Goodreads page , next to the big empty box wher you type in what you are searching for you'll see several links:
Home My Books Groups Recommendations Explore
Next to "explore" you'll see a little box with a down arrow

Click THAT arrow and you'll see a list

Click Popular
When that page opens - ON THE RIGHT - you'll see
BROWSE BOOKS ... and a list of links under it ... one of which is
Popular Shelves

Click Popular Shelves and it will take you to a list of the most popular shelves.
At the top of that list is a box where you can type in the TAG/SHELF you are searching for.
Type WW2 (for example) and you'll get a list of books with that tag.
If you've already read the book it will have a little grey box marked READ, and your rating beneath it.

Hope that helps.

Kristel, GR has 3 pre-defined exclusive shelves -- you can create others. When you look at any list like the popular shelves or a listopia, there will be a button for each book. If you have it shelved on one of your exclusive shelves (read, to-read, or currently reading), the button will be grey with the shelf it is on. If you don't have it shelved, the button will be green with "want to read".

I actually created an exclusive shelf called "own-tbr" which is all the books I own, but haven't read. When I look at a popular shelf, it will tell me if the book is on my own-TBR or want-to-read (meaning that at some point, I thought this was an interesting book. Sorry for the long post, but I hope this helps.

Thanks for adding to this - these finding shelf discussions were just above the one I linked to. Maybe Nicole can add these to the FAQ to help people become adjusted to a different way of doing things.

There are already instructions in the FAQ....

message 28: by Denizen (new)

Denizen (den13) | 1138 comments Questions. Does mystery thriller include books that are on both mystery and thriller shelves or does it have to be tagged "mystery thriller"? I guess the same would go for paranormal fantasy?

21st century looks very broad. I was thinking the book was set in the 21st century but it looks like many people tagged for published in the 21st century. Is it irrelevant as long as it pops up on a 21st century search?

Thanks for this great info. It's always helpful to get directions rather than finding it by trial and error, time and so on. I just voted without that this time, because it was such an easy decision for me.

message 30: by Nicole R (new)

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments Denizen, the shelf is "mystery thriller" -- one shelf here on Goodreads. However, with the monthly tag we have always been flexible; you can read s book that is already in that shelf or one that you think should be added.

Same goes with 21st century, we are flexible on how you define that whether it be set in the 21st century or written in the 21st century.

We are more strict with challenges and games but we currently do not have any going so no need to worry about it yet!

Anita Pomerantz | 9296 comments For future, until we get used to the system, I'll post the shelves where you can find the most popular books for each tag.

For this month:

Normally, I like to keep it secretive so people will click on the SurveyMonkey link, but until all the Shelfarians get the hang of it, we'll help!

I'm not sure if this is possible, but can you just put the links in the survey monkey? That way it will still be secretive, but also help people.

I really tried to find directions but somehow did not find them. I knew they were there...that's why I said I was "thick". I've been here at GR for years and don't know have the stuff that the newbie knows.

This is a great idea! I will try. I don't know if it can appear as an actual link, but people could copy it to their browser at least.

You could add the generic link to the intro:

https://www.goodreads.com/shelf

That way the suspense is there and all shelves are just a click away.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Goodreads has new survey monkey survey going just now for members of the Feedback group and it embeds a link in one of the questions. I don't pretend to know how survey monkey works, just saying it might be possible.

Oh, super! I'm definitely going to look into it. The one issue is that SurveyMonkey has some features that are free and others that are at a cost, and being cheap, I'm getting by with the free features.

Linking may or may not cost money.

message 45: by Jen (new)

Jen | 1545 comments Anita- I have a paid survey monkey account. I'm happy to let you use it if needed for PBT. I'd have to figure out how to give you access but if you don't have access to it in the free version, that is an option. I use it for research purposes. Not sure I'll renew next year. Depends on grant funding situation which changes from year to year.
