Summery:

The Shadowhunters of Los Angeles star in the first novel in Cassandra Clare’s newest series, The Dark Artifices, a sequel to the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series. Lady Midnight is a Shadowhunters novel.

It’s been five years since the events of City of Heavenly Fire that brought the Shadowhunters to the brink of oblivion. Emma Carstairs is no longer a child in mourning, but a young woman bent on discovering what killed her parents and avenging her losses.

Together with her parabatai Julian Blackthorn, Emma must learn to trust her head and her heart as she investigates a demonic plot that stretches across Los Angeles, from the Sunset Strip to the enchanted sea that pounds the beaches of Santa Monica. If only her heart didn’t lead her in treacherous directions…

Making things even more complicated, Julian’s brother Mark—who was captured by the faeries five years ago—has been returned as a bargaining chip. The faeries are desperate to find out who is murdering their kind—and they need the Shadowhunters’ help to do it. But time works differently in faerie, so Mark has barely aged and doesn’t recognize his family. Can he ever truly return to them? Will the faeries really allow it?

Glitz, glamours, and Shadowhunters abound in this heartrending opening to Cassandra Clare’s Dark Artifices series.

No problem at all. :o)

I was thinking about reading this but when I go to Amazon it says it's a sequel to the Mortal Instruments series and I haven't read that series yet, so I guess it's not the best time to read this book.

message 16: by Tami (new)

Tami | 2 comments I am back and forth about this, but I am in! I got my copy for my kindle and iPad for super cheap so figured what the heck :) Not sure if anybody else reads on a device (instead of physical copy) but if so and want to save some money here is the link where I bought mine

http://www.storenvy.com/products/1618...

If that isn't allowed, please let me know. I was pretty stoked because I have personally spent a small fortune on eBooks so it's nice to get a deal! LOL
Anyway, looking forward to this buddy read. Let's do this!

I personally would not read this one before the Mortal instruments series, as it is a sequel to that series.

Kaitlyn Burley | 29 comments I haven't read the Mortal Instruments series yet, but I have it on my TBR. If I read Lady Midnight, will I be confused without reading the others?

message 20: by Vicki (new) - added it

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 31156 comments That's my question, Kaitlyn.

message 21: by Sarah (new) - added it

Sarah As for the buddy read, if I get a copy by the end of the month I'm in as well!

Kaitlyn wrote: "I haven't read the Mortal Instruments series yet, but I have it on my TBR. If I read Lady Midnight, will I be confused without reading the others?"

Vicki wrote: "That's my question, Kaitlyn."

You would likely be confused. Lady Midnight (and the whole Dark Artifices series) will be taking place about 5 years after the last book in the Mortal Instruments series (City of Heavenly Fire). The main characters of Dark Artifices are introduced in that book as well.
Since a lot of the world building for the series is done in Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices I'm not sure how much there will be in the way of explanations.
I would recommend reading Mortal Instruments first.

Michelle I just received my copy of Lady Midnight. I am have a few more books to read but I will start this Wednesday or Thursday the latest. I'm very excited!

Michelle Has anyone else started yet? The book is massive!

Sovanratana (booksandpugs) I'm planning to start tomorrow

Michelle I will start sometime this coming week. I have a couple of books I want to finish first. I am trying to avoid bringing it with to school because it is massive and heavy. Lol

message 29: by Ashlyn (new) - added it

Ashlyn | 1842 comments I saw someone at my school carrying it around last week. It is very big! I don't really want to start it until I have finished some other books.

Sovanratana (booksandpugs) Me too! I'm waiting till I finish Tales from the shadowhunter academy to start it

Michelle I don't know why but I don't feel like picking this book up right now. I just want to read other books first. Has anyone started yet? Would it be possible to move this buddy read to May?

message 32: by Ashlyn (new) - added it

Ashlyn | 1842 comments I think May would be great! I have a lot of library books to read.

Michelle May 19th?

Sovanratana (booksandpugs) I've already finished haha

Michelle Oh. Hahaha did you like it?

Sovanratana (booksandpugs) I loved it! It's so good! Hands down best book I will ever read this year. It's my #2 favorite book. #1 is Clockwork Princess. I can't wait for the entire series to come out!

NO you wont.
I read Lady Midnight...
I read Mortal Instruments a LONG time ago and never finished the series.

Lady Midnight references the past A LOT. but the book tells you everything you need to know.
You may just not get as excited when the MC talkes about the MC from Mortal Instruments as much as someone who read that series would... but it isn't confusing.
You dont get to dive as deeply into some of the characters, like the silent brothers were better explained in the Mortal Instruments, also the characters of Lady Midnight you meet at some point in Mortal Instruments...

But the book is written so that if you dont read Mortal Instruments you wont be lost. It is a whole new series, it just branched off from an old one.
