Set in Coal Hill School, with the kids doing battle against alien badies. More like Sarah Jane Adventures?

That was my first thought too. ;)

Thanks for the scoop Rick!

message 4: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2399 comments Could be fun , but it's no 'Sarah Jane Adventures'.

Why can't we get a Lady Vastra and Co. series instead?

message 5: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Travis wrote: "Why can't we get a Lady Vastra and Co. series instead?"

That would be awesome! Although I'm still hoping for a Captain Jack Harkness & Professor River Song series. "Oh the mind races!" ;)

That would be cooler than the proposed(?) series with Clara and Me, or what ever she's calling herself these days.

I wanted to see Jack reform a new Torchwood team with Mickey and Martha and maybe Donna.

CaptKirk42 Classic Whovian (klandersen) | 184 comments So far from what I've seen/heard it is only set at Coal Hill School. Modern times I think. No mention so far of past companions or characters.

Rick | 2260 comments Travis wrote: "I wanted to see Jack reform a new Torchwood team with Mickey and Martha and maybe Donna."

Yeah, I just want more Torchwood and MORE Capt. Jack Harkness. ;)

Rick | 2260 comments Lori S. wrote: "That would be cooler than the proposed(?) series with Clara and Me, or what ever she's calling herself these days."

Yeah, the two spin-offs I'd love to see would be one with the Paternoster Gang and a new Torchwood with Capt. Jack Harkness & Prof. River Song.

message 11: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2399 comments Would also love a new UNIT series.

Actually, they could give almost any companion or supporting character a spin-off and I'd be pretty happy.

message 12: by Jadetyger (new)

Jadetyger Sevea | 73 comments Yeah, I have no interest in Class. They already did that brilliantly in SJA. I agree with those that would like to see a Vastra and Jenny (and Strax) spinoff.

message 13: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2399 comments Anyone else see the trailer for 'Class'?
How old are those 'kids' supposed to be?
I thought Coal Hill was like a High School, but the actors look college age at best.
The whole thing feels like Moffatt trying to be Joss Whedon and really didn't work for me.

I watched the trailer recently and those kids are not really kids. I keeping an open mind though, but you're probably right about Moffat channeling his inner Joss Whedon...

Jadetyger Sevea | 73 comments I saw the trailer. It looks interesting, but I agree that the actors don't look 16 by any stretch of the imagination. The show also looks like it should be on the CW, if that makes any sense.

But I will give it a chance. The overall idea looks interesting.

Yeah, everyone is too pretty. LOL ;0)

Janelle (janelle5) | 45 comments I watched the first episode and I think I'll give the series a miss. Just not my thing. And yeah, some of the kids don't look like kids.

Geek_is_chic555 | 3 comments I am a huge fan of the show. Especially the fact that the main characters aren't straight, white people. There are different races, sexualities and even different species! The aliens are new and interesting. I love it already!

I hope we get to see it soon on this side of the Atlantic!

Sarah (mollygr) BBCA doesn't plan on showing it until Doctor Who starts.

Well, that's good to hear! Yay for diversity. :)

Geek_is_chic555 | 3 comments They might not be showing yet where you live but, it's on tv here...The first two episodes are already out...

message 24: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2399 comments So, got to watch the first episode and it did not suck...the breakfast club fights aliens.
Cast is likable, decent set up and Capaldi's appearance didn;'t feel as tacked on as I thought it might.

Cast still looks too old for high school and I could have done with a bit less stage blood.

Didn't love it, didn't hate it, if netflix gets it on instant, I'll probably try a couple more episodes.

I watched it too, and to be honest, I'm not surprised might get cancelled already.

Typical teenage angsty stuff intermingled with aliens out of water and lots of running around. Not that it did not keep my attention though.

I don't think the teens are too old for the story, but they are dealing with themes which are pretty mature and that's bound to change how we see them. They certainly are not as young as the kids on The Sarah Jane Adventures, so it's a nice change to see older people learning the joys of saving the Earth from unwanted alien invasions.

message 26: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2399 comments I did't mind the angst as much as I thought I would, as it feels like they won't just be doing 'issue of the week', but rather the drama will play out over the season.

But, yeah, too much dark and bloody. It's like the people behind Torchwood set out to create a new version of SJA.

CaptKirk42 Classic Whovian (klandersen) | 184 comments I enjoyed it more than I thought I might. To be honest after hearing what "Class" was going to be about at first I was not too interested in even watching it. Since BBCA decided to show it right after Doctor Who I thought why not? If they had chosen to show it another night I might not have bothered.

It does have a tiny bit of the same type of vibe that "The Sarah Jane Adventures" had but not quite.

message 28: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments I did finally get to see this. I enjoyed it very much, but I agree there was just a touch of Sarah Jane Adventures that wore a bit thin as the series progress. Sadly, it didn't get renewed. It would have been interesting to see how it developed over a couple years.

message 29: by Lori S. (new)

Lori S. (fuzzipueo) | 768 comments Mod
Oddly enough, Class has very little of SJA in it, for me. I agree with Travis on the Torchwood idea, it's a good deal darker and bloodier than SJA ever got. And the whole trope about the alien prince, his nemesis and their relationship, such as it was, would have started really grating in series 2 if there'd been one. It was already annoying in the first series.

message 30: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2399 comments Really?
Miss quill was one of my favorite parts as no attempt seemed to be made to soften her
She was refreshingly amoral and snarky

message 31: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Oh, I agree that it was a "good deal darker and bloodier than SJA ever got", as I said it had "just a touch" of that series. For me it fell somewhere between the two spin-offs. I just would have liked to see where they would have taken it in later seasons. Doesn't matter now though, as it's over and done.

message 32: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments I just found that there are three novels based on the series. I added them to the shelves. Just saying... ;)

message 33: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2399 comments and there is talk that Big Finish is going to do some Class stories.

message 34: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Yeah, I saw that as well. Makes me happy. :D

message 35: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments I’ve listened to the first two sets of stories from Big Finish and have the next two sets waiting for me. I really enjoy them. Although I do wish they featured the whole group and not just two or three of the primary characters with guest stars playing the other parts. They just don’t quite have the same appeal, as this format limits the interactions a bit.
Class Volume 1
Class Volume 2
Class Volume 3
Class Volume 4
I’m hoping for more, but I don’t think Big Finish has announced any new additions yet. But with their upcoming new reorganization... Who knows. 😼

message 36: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2399 comments Class never hooked me.
Feels like the writers of Torchwood trying to write the kids from Sarah Jane.
But, I am glad that it is getting a second chance from BF.

message 37: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments I get what your saying, but Charlie and Matteusz Really made the series for me.

message 38: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2399 comments Even when it isn't a franchise I'm into, I'm always happy when BF gives an old franchise or something cut short a second chance.

What's fun is that they tend to improve the franchise in the process - maybe because they're out to please the audience, not the suits.

I’ve been thinking the very same thing as I’ve been enjoying release after release from them. Even the ones I don’t enjoy as much Still feel like their made with love and passion. That’s why I’m now finding myself willing to try their original productions that aren’t just spun off from other franchises.

Think there's a lot of truth to that.
There has to be enthusiasm for the franchise for BF and I think that shows.
Let's face it, you don't get the rights to Space:1999 because you think it'll make you rich or impress the kids these days.
You have to have some fanboy love for it.

message 43: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Ha! I just bought their adaptation of Breakaway last week. Looking forward to it, as I’m a huge fan of the old series. That was my gateway fandom back in the 70s. While in high school, I started going to Space: 1999 conventions that were held in the Midwest and eastern states, this was while conventions were still used to raise money for charity and not for profit. I haven’t listened to Space 1999: Breakaway yet, but I’m looking forward to it. ...
Oh great, look what You’ve gone and done, I just started listening to it while I’m writing this. 🙄
