Lesley Moseley | 717 comments Man Booker 2016 winner : The Sellout by
Paul Beatty
So glad Hot Milk didn't win As one of the Books and Arts presenters said, Deborah Levy must have been shortlisted for her other book " Swimming Home".. Just her opinion; I haven't read it.

Denizen (den13) | 566 comments The Sellout descriptions haven't caught my attention as something I would like so will definitely wait for friend feedback. I still have several winners from previous years on my TBR that have never risen to the top so will work one of those in if I start feeling Bookerish.

I did like it too, but as I had just finished (search not working) The Portable Veblen by Elizabeth Mckenzie, it suffered by comparison, IMHO.

message 106: by Karin (new)

Karin Many liked Hot Milk, but from what I've read about it and the sage advice of someone who knows what I like and don't, I'm not planning to read it.

Yes, it did for me too, then I clicked on "
Madeleine Thien wins 2016 Governor General's Literary Award for fiction "
http://www.cbc.ca/books/2016/10/2016-...

NOW it took me straight there (???)

•How many Governor General Literary Award fiction winners have you read?

The English-language winners of this year's awards are:
•Fiction: Do Not Say We Have Nothing by Madeleine Thien
•Nonfiction: A World We Have Lost: Saskatchewan Before 1905 by Bill Waiser
•Poetry: The Waking Comes Late by Steven Heighton
•Young People's Literature (text): Calvin by Martine Leavitt
•Young People's Literature (illustrated books): Tokyo Digs a Garden by Jon-Erik Lappano and Kellen Hatanaka
•Translation (French to English): The Party Wall translated by Lazer Lederhendler, written by Catherine Leroux
•Drama: Pig Girl by Colleen Murphy

The prizes offer $25,000 in each of the seven categories. A peer assessment committee selects the winners. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Governor General's Literary Awards.
•Celebrate 80 years of the Governor General's Literary Awards

On Nov. 30, 2016, the winners will be presented with their awards by Governor General David Johnston at Rideau Hall in Ottawa.

I got that same response when I tried earlier.

I did a google, found the site, and found this list of past winners (prior to 2015).
http://ggbooks.ca/~/media/ggbooks/201...
I hadn't realized that The Tin Flute translation was a winner (or, more likely, I forgot, if it was mentioned on the cover of my mother's copy.) I've read that one, A Jest of God (Margaret Laurence), The Handmaid's Tale, The Stone Diaries and possibly one or two more (not totally sure because it's been so many years since I read those authors.)

I'm giggling - How many Crossroaders does it take to successfully post a list.....

I didn't recognize anyone until Farley Mowat in 1956 and then nothing until Roberston Davies in 1972. After that, I recognized someone every few years. Really surprised to see a Guy Vanderhaeghe in 1982. I'll have to check out that book. I really enjoyed his The Last Crossing. Adding his The Englishman's Boy to the TBR which won several years later.

I have read Farley Mowatt, but at first I was only looking for fiction. I'm not sure if I read the book they gave him the award for or not, but I've read at least 3 of his books.

Lesley Moseley | 717 comments OZ Prime Ministers Literary Awards announced last night.
Joint winners of the fiction prize were Lisa Gorton (The Life of Houses) and Charlotte Wood (The Natural Way of Things). Geoffrey Blainey (The Story of Australia's People), and Sam Lipski and Suzanne Rutland (Let My People Go) shared the Australian history prize. And the non-fiction award was split between Sheila Fitzpatrick (On Stalin's Team) and Karen Lamb (Thea Astley). FTI..

I'm not finished yet but so far am showing remarkable restraint. Of course, 20 or so are already on my list and I've read another six.

Last night I started Our Endless Numbered Days which I remember you liking a great deal, Story. The plot line has always fascinated me.

I spent 5 seconds on the list and put one on my Amazon wishlist and decided I needed to wait to peruse it more cautiously...

for the curious this is the one that made it to the wishlist.
The Legend of Winstone Blackhat The Legend of Winstone Blackhat by Tanya Moir

Story (storyheart) One book added after only 5 seconds! Impressive.

I added 7 (though like Den, I'd already read quite a few) but my library is helping me restrain myself because they only have 3 of that 7. Though there are always interlibrary loans...

It looks like a winner. I haven't seen it on the list yet.

I have made library availability a large part of my decision tree. I have to really want to read a book to order it through ILL. There are so many other books on my TBR that are just a click away.

If you're making your way through the holiday reading pile more quickly than expected, fear not! Here are some titles that local booksellers told Bookish they can't wait to get their hands on this summer...

- I am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes
- The Hate Race by Maxine Beneba Clarke
- Hagseed by Margaret Atwood
- The Sellout by Paul Beatty
- Lady Cop Makes Trouble by Amy Stewart
- The Mothers by Brit Bennett
- Terranauts by T.C. Boyle
- Portable Curiosities by Julie Koh

Watch the final Bookish of the year on ABC iview to find out why booksellers reckon these are the hottest reads this season.

I'm making my way through the Kirkus list and finding several to add and some affirmation on choices already made. Here's one that caught my eye as a book that might catch the eye of several members of this group:

A Study in Scarlet Women.
"For fans of etiquette-flouting heroines who desire truth while being true to their desires—gastronomic, romantic, and cerebral."
What if the word's most famous (and eccentric) Victorian detective were a young gentlewoman in the midst of a scandal?
