Team First for Knowledge - Reporting
this is the homework - to be turned in by Monday 29th midnight EST ON the following thread https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...Oh, didn't I mention homework? ☺
Besides the 10 points for each book read, there will be 10 bonus points for completing the homework. After reading your book I want you to write about some of the points listed, and/or any other relevant points. Not all of the points apply to every situation, and you don’t have to talk about all that do.
The book read
What issue it’s about
What did you learn?
What are the legal, ethical, and moral implications?
Can you see the other side's viewpoint or understand where it comes from? (This doesn’t mean you agree with it)
What causes the issue?
Are there compromises, treatments, or preventative measures?
What actions can be taken to stop/control/prohibit intolerable actions?
As citizens of the world, how much responsibility do we have to do something about inhumane actions? And what kind of actions can we take?
Is having a label helpful for others to understand, or does it give a negative connotation that affects others views?
What leads a person to certain behaviors, and what can be done to help someone caught in the cycle? Is there a way to prevent them?
Who determines what constitutes the issue (like discrimination, sexual harassment or bullying)? Does reporting harassment result in appropriate action being taken, or turn you into a pariah?
Does inappropriate behavior invite inappropriate response?

So our reporting posts should list the book, why we read it (10 points) and EDIT: and whether we have answered some of the questions Jmom poses in the homework thread (10 points). Sound like a plan?
Homework doesn't have to be turned in immediately after finishing a book. You have until Monday at midnight EST.
So I was wrong. Nothing new there. Our Reporting Posts should say:
I read XXX book for ZZZ category (10 points). And I have discussed it as Jmom wanted in the Homework Thread (10 points).
Discussing here won't count. But that allows counting in this thread pretty easily.

i think we will do the counting and Janxsmon the deciding if we reported enough?
I am going to start with Middlesex Having a busy weekend - we had our house broken into and car stolen a couple of weeks ago now doing the rounds trying to decide what to replace it with
Car shopping is always a pain. Good luck!!I think we report that we have done it and count it. Jmom can then contest if she thinks we need more. I think the default will be, go there and consider and discuss the issues she raises. If you do that, you are more than likely to get the points. I'm assuming as homework doesn't close until the end of the Toppler, we can edit and fix up if needed.
I have finished my first book Speak which is about rape and depression.I will think more on my review and do my homework on it later. I did give it 4 stars and although I didn't realize it I have read another book by this author called Chains which was also very good, although Goodreads lost my review on it. How does that happen??
I've finished my first book! So You Thought You Knew: Letting Go of Religion for the religion topic. I'll post in the homework section in a little while when I've had more time to think about my responses. Overall, i loved this book. It was definitely "outside of my box" in the best possible ways.I'm not a religious person even though I consider myself a Christian. I've always had so many thoughts and questions that aren't readily accepted in The Bible Belt. Because of this, I've always kept my opinions to myself for the most part and avoided going to church. This book was great for me because i found a kindred spirit in the author. So many of the things he wrote about are the exact things I've thought and felt throughout my life. He also answered some of the questions I've always had. I probably highlighted or bookmarked half of the book on my kindle. 5 Stars!
KimeyDiann-That sounds really good. What state are you in the Bible Belt. I'm in TN and boy was it ever culture shock to me when I moved there from NY, lol.I am hoping to finish up Infidel tonight. It is fantastic.

I'm in Mississippi. Very close to the TN state line actually. What region of TN are you in?
I have finished Unbearable Lightness: A Story of Loss and Gain about Portia de Rossi's struggle with anorexia. I'll do the homework when I can get to the computer rather than my tablet. I'm planning on starting The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks next.
Susan wrote: "I have finished Unbearable Lightness: A Story of Loss and Gain about Portia de Rossi's struggle with anorexia. I'll do the homework when I can get to the computer rather than my tabl..."i loved the immortal life so many issues
I have finished Middlesex. I will do reporting later when i have had a chance to think about it. As a book i really enjoyed it but very little of it was about the issue that most would think the essence of the book

Yo are close to Memphis? I am way on the other side in the mountains between Virginia, NC, and TN.
It is beautiful country.
I really liked The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.Marie-Did you like Middlesex?
I just finished Infidel and wow I need some time to absorb it then write a review and do my homework.
Next up is The Disappearing Girl
OK, finished with The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. I'll try to get to the homework task in the next day or two. Quite a thought provoking book. I was fascinated.
Lisa wrote: "I really liked The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.Marie-Did you like Middlesex?

Yes i thoroughly enjoyed Middlesex - so well written but am not certain whether the issue was being an hermaphrodite, incest or just plain bad handling of the situation by the medical profession.
I felt Cal took the wrong decision because he / she was not helped by either the medics or to some degree the parents
Finished The Neanderthals Rediscovered: How Modern Science Is Rewriting Their Story. Quite interesting. If you feel the need to know something more about the life of Neanderthals, I recommend this book. It certainly broadened my knowledge and corrected many old misconceptions about them.
Finished Thin Wire: A Mother's Journey Through Her Daughter's Heroin AddictionI sort of lost patience with this mother and daughter - the book ends with a list of 10 things you should do to get out of addiction or as the parent of an addict - i don't believe wither mum or daughter stuck to these for more than about 10% of the journey and without the (view spoiler)
Lisa wrote: "Yo are close to Memphis? I am way on the other side in the mountains between Virginia, NC, and TN.It is beautiful country. "
It is beautiful! We try to go to the Gatlinburg area every few years. I've been to Knoxville once, but it was just to meet someone and then drive back home.
Memphis is about 2 to 2.5 hours from me. Not that far when you consider that anything and everything is at least an hour away. The joys of living in the rural south. LOL.
Today I finished The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. This was a good novel and covered many of the Toppler themes, including Religion, Race, Politics, Cultural Beliefs, and Mental Illness. I'm tired tonight, but I'll do the homework for this one before the deadline.

My stepdaughter loves Gatlinburg. We are about 2 hours from there.
I like rural…cows make good neighbors, lol.
Theresa~OctoberLace wrote: "Today I finished The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. This was a good novel and covered many of the Toppler themes, including Religion, Race, Politics, Cultural Bel..."I am supposed to read that next month with a group. Did you like it?
Debra wrote: "I finished Waking Up: A Guide to Spirituality Without Religion and will do my homework later."
I have that on my TBR list. How was it?
I finished Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers. Fascinating. Will report in when I get homework submitted for my books. Off to see what I can read next.
I finished Elizabeth Is Missing by Emma Healey, a novel featuring a woman with dementia. I'll do my homework this weekend.Lisa, I did like The Poisonwood Bible , and Rusalka mentioned it's one of her favorites.
I'll start my third book this morning, but with our auditors coming in on Monday, we're working late every day and will work Saturday. The third will be my final for the Toppler.
Theresa~OctoberLace wrote: ".. and The Poisonwood Bible this weekend. Lisa, I did like that one, and Rusalka mentioned it's one of her favorites..."I do hope you enjoyed this one. Was worrying that I had built it up too much.

Rusalka, I did like it! It was a much deeper book than I expected, and I'm so glad I chose it.
Theresa~OctoberLace wrote: "Rusalka, I did like it! It was a much deeper book than I expected, and I'm so glad I chose it. "*phew* SO good to hear!
My second book is finished, The Back Building!I'll report in the homework thread a little later too.

I agree. I am glad it was good. I have a copy and have been putting off reading it.
I finished The Book of Mormon Girl: Stories from an American Faith and will get to the homework in the morning.
