Amanda | 1527 comments I am having a lot of trouble with Europeans!

Mikhail Bulgakov, Russian ? Born in then Russia but now Ukraine.

So many countries have changes since the time of an authors birth that I don't know how to categorize them :(

Looking at reading The Master and Margarita, is it set mostly in Russia ?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14225 comments Don't forget our author list! But to your specific question, Bulgakov was indeed born in The Ukraine, but we carry him as a Russian citizen. I can't say for certain about location as GR gives Russia and Israel, but we require only 75% to qualify, perhaps someone who read it can comment for you.

Ed Lehman | 2651 comments Most of the categories indicate "right side panel"...but when I pull up the page there is no right side panel. Am I right to assume the nations under the "Bordering countries and territories" section qualify?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14225 comments Ed wrote: "Most of the categories indicate "right side panel"...but when I pull up the page there is no right side panel. Am I right to assume the nations under the "Bordering countries and territories" secti..."

Yes, those in the panel on the right side. Some of the waters had separate sections for a list of countries and we didn't want you to spend time wandering through the text looking for a list that doesn't exist.

The countries listed on the spreadsheet are all extracted from the wiki pages.

message 6: by Ed (new)

Ed Lehman | 2651 comments Spreadsheet? I didn't see that. I also noticed that the Wikipedia page does not list Myanmar (Burma) on the Indian Ocean when it clearly is.

message 7: by Ed (new)

Ed Lehman | 2651 comments oops...nevermind...Burma is listed. I guess I was looking for Myanmar.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14225 comments Yes, there is a spreadsheet linked just above the list of waters. Here is the link.

Yes...indeed....it fits two of my other challenges.... and I really appreciate the fact that we can plan so early..... going on a long cruise...so, I have to figure out now which books I will bring with me since I won't be able to use library books. Thanks!

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14225 comments When are you leaving? Kate's projected schedule for the 20-point themed tasks says they should be posted about mid-week - maybe you can plan those too!

message 13: by Ed (new)

Ed Lehman | 2651 comments That will be great. I'll be looking for books I can download free to my Kindle or light paperbacks for my trip to lighten the load.
I leave on March 13...so, I have some time. I'll be back April 22.

message 14: by Bea (new)

Bea So, I looked at the Yellow Sea on the Wikipedia page. On the right side, I see a map, but it only lists three countries - South Korea, North Korea and China. Since I would have to read 10 books, would I put more than one waterway together to make the 10?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14225 comments Bea wrote: "So, I looked at the Yellow Sea on the Wikipedia page. On the right side, I see a map, but it only lists three countries - South Korea, North Korea and China. Since I would have to read 10 books, wo..."

You need to read 10 different countries from 10 different waterways. You can use a country that borders the Yellow Sea for one of your countries and one of your waterways.

Many of the countries border more than one waterway, giving you options.

Bea Elizabeth (Alaska) wrote: "Bea wrote: "So, I looked at the Yellow Sea on the Wikipedia page. On the right side, I see a map, but it only lists three countries - South Korea, North Korea and China. Since I would have to read ..."

Ah. Now I get it. Thanks.

message 17: by Bea (new)

Bea Next question: The description of the play says "When a country borders more than one waterway, it will be used only for the one you designate and does not use up one of your options for the other(s)." Don't you mean it would use up the option for the other waterway?

message 18: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (last edited Feb 13, 2016 06:17PM) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14225 comments It means that if you read for France, for instance, and designate it for the Rhine River, that the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, which France also borders, are still still available for you to use for another country. Since you need to read for 10 different waterways, it wouldn't be fair that once you had chosen to read for France, you couldn't then read any country for those others.

Bea Elizabeth (Alaska) wrote: "It means that if you read for France, for instance, and designate it for the Rhine River, that the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, which France also borders, are still still available for you..."

Got it. So I could use those three different waterways and, for each, use a book for France.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14225 comments Bea wrote: "Got it. So I could use those three different waterways and, for each, use a book for France. "

No, you can use France only once. 10 different countries, 10 different waterways.

Amanda | 1527 comments Looking for my last 1001-listed, translated, pre-1991 book ....

Was looking at Solaris.

Stanislaw Lem is Polish, and where he was born was once part of Poland, but is now part of the Ukraine. Obviously Poland isn't going to work for setting.

Does he count for Poland or not ?

Eep, I have Lem's A Perfect Vacuum on my possible list. :/

eta: On the author list Lem is listed as both born in and cit/res of Ukraine...?

If you have 2 out of 3 of the criteria you are ok, but I am finding that it keeps being problematic with Europeans because of shifting borders.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14225 comments Amanda wrote: "that it keeps being problematic with Europeans because of shifting borders. "

The borders don't shift for Reading with Style. As Kazen points out, this group considers him for The Ukraine, both born and citizen.

Bea I am looking at maps...and, although Wikipedia does not use the term "Malaysia" but instead talks about "the Malay peninsula", I am assuming that Malaysia borders the South China Sea, correct?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14225 comments Yes, on the linked spreadsheet is this listing:

SOUTH CHINA SEA

China, People's Rep of
Macau
Hong Kong
Taiwan
Philippines
Malaysia
Brunei
Indonesia
Singapore
Vietnam

That's a difficult question to answer due to the magic realism aspect of the novel - however, my recollection is that more of the action takes place in Russia.

Thanks Valerie. I've put in something else for Russia for now, but I may change my mind!

I forgot to open the list again at that time, apologies. I did open it later.

My husband convinced me to go for The Leopard, which we have on our shelves, so I found my 10, with only 4 library borrows. Looks like I will have to start with the sub-challenge for next season as I will have at least 3 of those to pick up next weekend!

Especially as he had done a 11hour shift at work and was very tired. He was struggling with the details, but when I read out the Mediterranean and admitted to not having anything Italian he piped out. Just as I was considering reading Zorba the Greek, but we went with the smaller book ;)

Ed Lehman | 2651 comments I may wish to read A Traveller's History of India by Sinharaja Tammita-Delgoda but.... there is no information on Good Reads about the author. My copy of the book informs me that he was born in Sri Lanka and lives in Sri Lanka.... is that sufficient to satisfy the nationality requirement for WoW?

Yes.... I am really lucky and really splurging on this trip.... which includes an excursion to Antartica..... so, packing is a challenge....need warm, cold and colder clothing.

message 40: by Rebekah (last edited Feb 15, 2016 11:04AM) (new)

Rebekah (bekalynn) I'm having problems with the Mediterranean area. I have so many books from countries whose only waterway is this Sea..
Greece, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria
I also want to read an Israeli book and I can use Indian Ocean but I also have Indian books and India's only waterway is the Indian Ocean. Decisions, decisions!!

Guess I can't use The Aegean Sea for Greece since it isn't on list.

Rebekah (bekalynn) Where is the setting for The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende ?

message 42: by Rosemary (new)

Rosemary | 4276 comments I'm not sure it's stated, Rebekah. It mirrored Chile but without ever saying so, as far as I recall. That's magical realism for you :(

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14225 comments Beth wrote: "Will Ghosts of Tsavo by Vered Ehsani qualify for Kenya? She is resident and the book is set there."

Sorry to be a bit slow with the answer for this one. Although she does, indeed, currently reside in Kenya, we usually lean toward citizenship when we can. She says on her website:

I always hesitate when people ask me where I’m from. There’s no one-word answer to that. Born in South Africa and raised in Canada, I’ve lived in Kenya since mid-2000 with my husband, our two children and other amusing animals.

For this reason, we're going to not to allow her for Kenya, because she doesn't really seem to identify herself as Kenyan.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14225 comments Rebekah wrote: "Where is the setting for The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende ?"

Wikipedia says this takes place in Chile, and, although we know they aren't infallible, we'll go with it. I don't recall that the political leaders are named, but I think it is assumed the conflict is between Pinochet and Allende.

Bea I thought I was done...but I forgot to check BPL.

I found two books listed for YA Assignment: Steppenwolf (not on Canon - although Hermann Hesse is- and is not listed in Lexile) and The Prince (on Canon and high Lexile of 1430L). As I understand the rule: The Prince is OK even without Lexile numbers because it is on the Canon but I cannot use Steppenwolf. Did I get that correct?

I also did not find Ibsen's A Doll House at BPL by itself, although Ibsen has a book of unnamed plays there. I think I can use it.

Finally, two of my books are available only in audiobook format: Faceless Killers and The Sorrow of War. Since this is an electronic resource, it is not shelved. Are they usable?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14225 comments Bea wrote: "I thought I was done...but I forgot to check BPL.

You have the rule correct in all instances. No to Steppenwolf for WotW and yes to the others.

Just as a note, you needn't have checked the Lexile for The Prince because it was on the Canon, nor do you need to check Lexile if BPL doesn't have a title shelved at all.

Ha, Ha. Live and learn. I checked BPL first and then Lexile and then Canon. Guess I need to reverse my process a bit! :)

It appears to fit because of Citizenship and Setting - 2 out of 3!
